Background: Osteosarcoma (OS) lung metastases remain a significant therapeutic challenge. Innate immune activation is a promising therapeutic approach. Innate immune agonists can modulate the tumor immune microenvironment and improve therapeutic response.

Methods: Using an experimental syngeneic OS lung metastasis BALB/c mouse model with K7M3-luc OS cells, we evaluated the antitumor effects of yeast-derived particulate β-glucan in prevention and therapeutic settings. We then assessed whether the CD40 agonist (CD40a) in combination with β-glucan increased therapeutic response in two different immune-competent mouse models of OS lung tumor burden.

Results: In the pretreatment settings, mice treated with β-glucan prior to OS cell infusion …

Motivation

Determining geographic origin of samples is a common objective in wildlife management, forensics, and conservation. Current methods often assume evolutionary models or require extensive reference datasets, which are costly and difficult to develop, that perform poorly with uneven or biased sampling. Supervised deep learning offers a promising alternative by learning complex patterns without prior model specifications. Combined with novel geo-genetic data augmentation and preprocessing techniques, it can reduce reference panel demands and improve performance across diverse sampling schemes, broadening accurate provenance determination to more study systems. The persistent residual tumor cells that survive after chemotherapy are a major cause of treatment failure, but their survival mechanisms remain largely elusive. These cancer cells are typically characterized by a quiescent state with suppressed activity of MYC and MTOR. We observed that the MYC-suppressed persistent triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells are metabolically flexible and can upregulate mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) genes and respiratory function ("OXPHOS-high" cell state) in response to DNA-damaging anthracyclines such as doxorubicin, but not to taxanes. The elevated biomass and respiratory function of mitochondria in OXPHOS-high persistent cancer cells were associated with mitochondrial elongation and remodeling, …

The Effects Of Plastic Mulch And Irrigation On Hemp Chemistry And Leaf Endophytes, Allison Rietman, Connor Morozumi, Robert C. Pearce, Natalie Christian

Journal of Agricultural Hemp Research

As an emerging crop, cultivation techniques for industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) are still being developed and optimized. For example, irrigation and plastic mulching are some management practices that have been touted for their benefits in improving crop quality. Both techniques ensure ample water availability, which has often been attributed to improving hemp cannabinoid and terpene composition. In this study, we examined how supplemental irrigation implemented in a plastic mulch system influenced the cannabinoid and terpene profiles of one cultivar of CBD hemp, Lifter. We grew industrial hemp in field with plastic mulch and applied regular irrigation to one group …

Pathlength, Altitude And Angle Of Incidence Dependence Of Remote Water Raman Scattering, Whitney E. Schuler, Paige K. Williams, Zechariah B. Kitzhaber, Caitlyn M. English, Tammi L. Richardson, Nikos Vitzilaios, Michael L. Myrick

Faculty Publications

A small remote Raman sensor was used to measure the Raman scattering signal from clear, still water as a function of water depth (12 cm and 396 cm depth), sensor distance above the water surface (20–300 cm), and angle of incidence (0–80°) to the normal of the water surface. Under thick- and thin-sample conditions, the signal depends on either the inverse, or the inverse square, of sensor distance from the water surface, respectively. A model is derived that fits data for different sensor distances, water depths, and angles of incidence. Fits to the measured data are consistent with the known …

Histone post-translational modifications (PTMs) are crucial to eukaryotic genome regulation, with a range of reported functions and mechanisms of action. Though often studied individually, it has long been recognized that the modifications function by combinatorial synergy or antagonism. Interplay may involve PTMs on the same histone, within the same nucleosome (containing a histone octamer), or between nucleosomes in higher-order chromatin. Given this, the field must distinguish ever greater complexity, and the context in which it is studied, with brevity and precision. The proteoform was introduced to define individual forms of a protein by sequence and PTMs, followed by the nucleoform …

Factors Influencing Employee Green Behavior And Employee Green Attitude Among Muslims In Indonesia, Kurnia Sari Kasmiarno, Mahjus Ekananda, Gina Destrianti Karmanto

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

In a Muslim majority, developing country like Indonesia, religion shapes employees’ work ethic and professional behavior, embedding spiritual and cultural values into the workplace. Despite the increasing attention to pro-environmental behavior, previous studies have largely examined Green Human Resource Management (GHRM), religiosity, and environmental concern separately, often focusing on a single sector. This leaves employees from various occupational backgrounds underexplored. This study aims to examine the effects of Green Concern (GC), Green Motivation (M), GHRM, and Religiosity (REL) on Employee Green Behavior (EGB) and Employee Green Attitude (EGA) of Muslim employees in Indonesia. Data were collected through a quantitative survey …

Designing Portugal’S Voluntary Carbon Market: Insights From Key Stakeholders, Mahika Shergill Oct 2025

Designing Portugal’S Voluntary Carbon Market: Insights From Key Stakeholders, Mahika Shergill

Portugal: Sustainability and Environmental Justice

This project examines the design, integrity, and early implementation challenges of Portugal’s newly established Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM), created through Decree-Law 4/2024 as part of the country’s broader climate-mitigation strategy. The objective of the study is to evaluate whether the market’s regulatory architecture—particularly its treatment of additionality, permanence, methodologies, and co-benefit mechanisms—positions it to function as a credible and viable national carbon-governance instrument. The analysis draws on a mixed-methods approach combining legal and policy review with four semi-structured interviews conducted with policymakers, methodological designers, ecological practitioners, and environmental-law specialists. These interviews reveal that Portugal’s VCM is characterized by strong integrity …

When The Water Runs Out: Modelling Portuguese Pumped Hydro Storage Adequacy In Multi-Year Extreme Drought Conditions, Meg Gillies Oct 2025

When The Water Runs Out: Modelling Portuguese Pumped Hydro Storage Adequacy In Multi-Year Extreme Drought Conditions, Meg Gillies

Portugal: Sustainability and Environmental Justice

Portugal’s reliance on Pumped Hydro Storage (PHS) to support grid stability poses increasing risks as the share of renewables in the national energy mix approaches the 2030 goal of 85%, and droughts intensify across the Iberian Peninsula (Silva, 2024). Because simulation tools like EnergyPLAN model only one year at a time, they overlook the cumulative effects of prolonged hydrological stress (Lund, 2024). This research addresses that gap by implementing an iterative multi-year approach in EnergyPLAN, linking yearly simulations to assess how extended drought conditions impact PHS performance. Using a detailed 2024 model of Portugal’s power system and applying dry year …

Empowering Public Employees For Retirement Security: Evidence From A Pre-Retirement Financial Education Program, Suzanne Bartholomae, Mengya Wang

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

The United States is facing a retirement crisis, with eight in ten older adult households experiencing or at risk of financial insecurity (Tavares et al., 2024). National data shows 60% of Americans regularly contribute to retirement accounts, and just 40% have estimated their retirement savings needs (Lin et al., 2022). With approximately 5,900 Baby Boomers retiring daily (Fry, 2019), there is considerable interest in identifying effective strategies and policies to address retirement preparedness. This paper presents evaluation findings from a retirement planning financial education program delivered to 750 public employees by Iowa’s public employee retirement system and Cooperative Extension educators. …

Mhc Gene Analysis And Immune Variation In Lepidodactylus Lugubris (The Mourning Gecko), Helen T. Vu

2025 Fall Honors Capstones Projects - Archive

The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) plays a central role in vertebrate immune defense by enabling pathogen recognition and initiating adaptive immune responses. While MHC diversity has been extensively studied in sexually reproducing species, comparatively little is known about its evolution in asexual lineages. The parthenogenetic gecko Lepidodactylus lugubris provides a unique opportunity to investigate how clonality and hybrid origins influence immune gene diversity. By leveraging whole-genome data, this study overcomes the limitations of previous transcriptome-based analyses and provides a more comprehensive view of MHC diversity in a clonal vertebrate. As the first step towards understanding MHC evolution in parthenogenetic lizards, …

Grpa-Prs: A Risk Stratification Method To Identify Genetically-Regulated Pathways In Polygenic Diseases, Xiaoyang Li, Brisa S Fernandes, Andi Liu, Jingchun Chen, Xiangning Chen, Zhongming Zhao, Yulin Dai

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Introduction: Polygenic risk score (PRS) assesses genetic risk for diseases, yet some high-risk individuals avoid illness while low-risk individuals develop it. We hypothesize that unknown counterfactors may reverse PRS predictions, offering insights into disease mechanisms and interventions.

Methods: We developed a novel framework to identify genetically-regulated pathways (GRPas) using PRS-based stratification in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and schizophrenia (SCZ) cohorts. We calculated PRS models, stratified individuals by risk and diagnosis, and analyzed differential GRPas. For AD, analyses were further conducted with and without apolipoprotein E (APOE) effects, and across APOE haplotype.

Results: In AD, we identified several well-known AD-related pathways, including …

Genetic Entropy: A Critical Examination, Sarah Hunter Oct 2025

Genetic Entropy: A Critical Examination, Sarah Hunter

Science, Faith, and Origins

Genetic entropy is a hypothesis proposing that genomes deteriorate over time due to the gradual accumulation of slightly harmful mutations that natural selection cannot effectively remove. This paper explores the scientific debate surrounding this claim by examining differing perspectives on the theory of genetic entropy. Proponents of genetic entropy, such as John Sanford, argue that most mutations are deleterious and fall within a “near-neutral” range, allowing them to accumulate since their effects are too small for natural selection to detect. Evidence to support this claim includes Robert Carter and John Sanford’s research on the deterioration of the H1N1 viral genome …

The Science Of Sound: Studying The Cognitive, Emotional, And Physiological Effects Of Frequency, Genre, And Music, Jett Yarborough

Senior Honors Theses

Music influences emotion, physiology, and cognition, yet little is known about how the frequency it is tuned to affects these influences. Prior research has shown that music tuned to 432 Hz can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve sleep. My colleagues and I conducted two studies to investigate this. Our research found that music tuned to 432 Hz promotes a significant increase in memory retention and induces a state of focus and relaxation. These results suggest that shifting from the standard tuning frequency of 440 Hz to 432 Hz could have a profoundly positive impact on our daily lives. …
