Studies Of Immunity Against Hemorrhagic Septicemia, L. Van Es, H. M. Martin
Studies Of Immunity Against Hemorrhagic Septicemia, L. Van Es, H. M. Martin
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
As one of the phases of our inquiry an effort was made to acquire some general knowledge regarding the immunizing value (1) of sera prepared with the aid of Bacillus bipolaris septicus procured from cattle and swine or (2) of those alleged to be of service in the control or treatment of hemorrhagic septicemia in the species mentioned. The experiments reported in this publication were almost exclusively made with sera purchased from dealers in biologic products.

The County Agent's Handbook, I. B. Johnson
The County Agent's Handbook, I. B. Johnson
SDSU Extension Circulars
In the daily work of the county agricultural agent, the agricultural extension worker, the farmer, or anyone interested in agriculture, questions arise, whose answers involve much detailed information. Workers have frequently realized the value of a ready, pocket-sized reference from which such information might be obtained. It is hoped that this handbook may fulfill such a requirement. The material enclosed is of special application to the agricultural conditions of South Dakota, yet so much of it is of general application that the handbook will be found useful by any agricultural worker. The loose leaf plan enables anyone to add whatever …
A Synopsis Of The Scarabaeidae Of Nebraska (Coleoptera), R. W. Dawson
A Synopsis Of The Scarabaeidae Of Nebraska (Coleoptera), R. W. Dawson
University Studies (University of Nebraska) (1888–1984)
Several years ago the writer undertook a study of the "June-bug" family (Scarabaeidae) for the state of Nebraska. The object of the study was two fold: First to determine the number and status of our species in this large and economically important family, and second to present a taxonomic review which would enable the beginning student, or interested amateur, to readily name with reasonable certainty any species which he might encounter in the state.
In the following pages 40 genera and 162 species are tabulated, and notes given on the abundance, seasonal and geographical distribution of the species within the …

The Preparation Of Laboratory Specimens As An Aid To The Diagnosis Of Animal Diseases, L. Van Es, L. V. Skidmore
The Preparation Of Laboratory Specimens As An Aid To The Diagnosis Of Animal Diseases, L. Van Es, L. V. Skidmore
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
Many problems in connection with animal diseases require for their solution the application of methods which can only be undertaken at properly equipped laboratories. This ordinarily involves the collection, packing, and shipping of samples of specimens. The manner in which this is done is a most important factor and to a very large extent is responsible either for the success or for the failure of the undertaking. The discussion of the subject to which the following pages are devoted is taken in hand in the hope that it may provide guidance to the veterinarians and others who may have occasion …
The Common Intestinal Roundworm Of Swine (Ascaris Lumbricoides), H. M. Martin
The Common Intestinal Roundworm Of Swine (Ascaris Lumbricoides), H. M. Martin
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
The large intestinal roundworm of pigs is a very common parasite and is probably present in every hog raising district of Nebraska. Up until the last few years the true nature of this parasite was unknown. Little did we realize the actual harm done by this worm; but through the scientific investigations of Stewart, Ransom, and others we now know that this parasite causes heavier losses to the breeder and feeder of swine than any other now common in Nebraska.

Variations In Cytolgoy And Gross Morphology Of Taraxacum, I. Cytology Of Taraxacum Laevigatum, Paul B. Sears
Papers in Ecology
These investigations are the outgrowth of a study, begun in 1914 at the instance of the late Professor C. E. Bessey, of parthenogenesis in Taraxacum vulgare (Lam.) Schrk. and T. laevigatum ( Willd.) DC. These two species are the common ones in central United States, being respectively designated as Leontodon taraxacum L. and L. erythrospermum (Andrz.) by Britton and Brown (3). In 1917 the existence of ameiotic parthenogenesis in both species was confirmed (23) and certain pollen abnormalities briefly described. These abnormalities have invited more critical analysis as a means of throwing light upon certain phases of variation …
Grasshoppers, Cutworms And Army Worms And Their Control By Poisoned Bran Mash, A. L. Ford
Grasshoppers, Cutworms And Army Worms And Their Control By Poisoned Bran Mash, A. L. Ford
SDSU Extension Circulars
Were it possible to accurately estimate in dollars and cents the average annual loss caused by grasshoppers, cutworms, and army worms to the growing crops of South Dakota, the figure arrived at would be a staggering one. These three pests cause a greater average annual damage than any other three insect pests in the state. Natural conditions here are such that we may expect outbreaks from any of these three in any part of the state for many years to come. Being situated in this manner, it behooves every farmer in South Dakota to be prepared to fight these pests …
Hog Houses For Nebraska, O. W. Sjogren, I. D. Wood
Hog Houses For Nebraska, O. W. Sjogren, I. D. Wood
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
The material contained in this bulletin is a culmination of several years' study and investigation of the different types of hog houses used in Nebraska. It is realized that the plans given will not suit all conditions that may arise, but an effort has been made to bring out the essential factors so that the plans may serve as a guide in planning a house suited to particular conditions.

Textile Study : Wool, Azalea Linfield
Textile Study : Wool, Azalea Linfield
SDSU Extension Circulars
Materials made from woolen and worsted yarns are among our most useful and valued textiles. The raw material is procured form the fleeces of the various breeds of sheeps, goats, and other animals living in all parts of the world. The clothes made from this wool or hair vary greatly, as the fiber ranges from the short staple, soft, crumpy, dull merino wool to the long, silky, lustrous wool of the Leicester sheep of England, the glossy hair of the Angora goat of Constantinople, or the long, coarse hair of the Chinese sheep. The length of the staple varies from …

The Physiology Of The Respiration Of Fishes In Relation To The Hydrogen Ion Concentration Of The Medium, Edwin B. Powers
The Physiology Of The Respiration Of Fishes In Relation To The Hydrogen Ion Concentration Of The Medium, Edwin B. Powers
Papers in Systematics and Biological Diversity
Within recent years much has been added to the knowledge concerning the mechanism of the respiratory function of the blood. Haldane and Priestley (1905) have shown that, at least in the higher animals, the respiratory movements are affected by the carbon dioxide tension of the arterial blood. It has been shown definitely (Hasselbalch, 1912 and citations) that the exciting agent is the hydrogen ion concentration of the blood bathing the respiratory center.
Krogh and Leitch (1919) undertook to study the respiratory function of the blood of fishes in view of the knowledge of the influence of temperature upon the dissociation …

Circular No. 46 - Thirty Years Of Agricultural Experiments In Utah, F. S. Harris, N. I. Butt
Circular No. 46 - Thirty Years Of Agricultural Experiments In Utah, F. S. Harris, N. I. Butt
UAES Circulars
The Utah Agricultural Experiment Station has been established over thirty years. During this time more than a hundred experimenters have worked on the staff, each one contributing something to aid in the researches that have been conducted. During the first few years regular annual reports were published, but during recent years no such reports have been issued. The results of the work of the Station have been published in station bulletins and circulars and in various technical journals.
Since there is no publication or series of publications that records all the activities of the Station it was thought desirable at …

Circular No. 45 - Alfalfa Production Under Irrigation, George Stewart
Circular No. 45 - Alfalfa Production Under Irrigation, George Stewart
UAES Circulars
Alfalfa was first planted and cared for by half-civilized man long before any history was written. In spite of the fact that its line of descent has come thru the Medes and Persians by way of the Greeks, the Romans, the Moslems, and the Spaniards,--in spite of long sojourns in many lands, the heritage is still undefiled. Instead of losing in adaptability, possibly long centuries of trial have made it more fit. At any rate, here it is: high in power to yield, rich in power to nourish.
With its deep roots it laughs at drought and mellows up the …
Circular No. 44 - The Agriculture Of Utah, F. S. Harris
Circular No. 44 - The Agriculture Of Utah, F. S. Harris
UAES Circulars
Agriculture is so intimately related to all other industries that anything which affects the farmer reflects itself in all branches of business. The banker, the merchant, and the manufacturer must keep in touch with crop and livestock conditions of the country in order to foresee the tendencies of their own businesses. This is particularly true in a state like Utah which depends fundamentally on the products of the soil for its prosperity.
Numerous requests are received by the Experiment Station from prospective settlers living out side of the state for information concerning the agriculture of Utah. These have been kept …
Bulletin No. 180 - The Irrigation Of Alfalfa, F. S. Harris, D. W. Pittman
Bulletin No. 180 - The Irrigation Of Alfalfa, F. S. Harris, D. W. Pittman
UAES Bulletins
In the United States alfalfa-growing has gone hand in hand with the development of irrigation. Alfalfa did not become an important crop in the country until after irrigation began to be practised in the West. Very soon after the pioneers reached Utah, alfalfa was brought to the state where it found conditions well suited to its growth. Wherever settlement extended alfalfa was raised as one of the most important crops, and finally from the West it has spread eastward into the humid parts of the country.
The Regional Adaptation Of Corn In Nebraska, T. A. Kiesselbach, F. D. Keim
The Regional Adaptation Of Corn In Nebraska, T. A. Kiesselbach, F. D. Keim
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The purpose of this investigation was to determine some of the factors involved in the regional adaptation of corn. The procedure has been to make a comparative study of native corn types, known to be locally adapted to various regional areas in Nebraska through long growth there. The work has been confined to the single species group - Zea mays indentata. No one variety of a common source is grown throughout the state, and therefore it has been impossible to keep within a single variety. It would appear that the data should indicate morphological and histological plant characteristics involved …

Bulletin No. 179 - Apple Candy: A Commercial Use For Cull Apples, T. H. Abell
Bulletin No. 179 - Apple Candy: A Commercial Use For Cull Apples, T. H. Abell
UAES Bulletins
Utah annually produces many tons of apples that never reach the consumer. These apples remain on the farm for various rwasons: (1) because there are not adequate marketing facilities, (2) because the fruit is of inferior quality, (3) because orchard units are too small for buyers to consider, and (4) because home orchards are so large that the crop cannot be utilized. On the other hand, apples of inferior quality go to the market alongside apples of high quality. The result is a lowering of the price of apples in general and dissatisfaction on the part of the retailer and …

Bulletin No 69 - The Poison Plants Of Western Australia, D. A. Herbert
Bulletins 1 - 2999
Up to the present no publication dealing with the whole of the known i)01S0fl plaits of Western Australia has been written. This Bulletin contains the collected accounts of various authors and correspondents which have been published at different times and contains a large amount of original information gathered both from field experience and from laboratory experiments. The work is not complete. A number of plants from distant districts have not been obtainable or obtainable only in amounts insufficient for exhaustive tests. These plants are comparatively few, however, and in Section 13 of this publication those which are suspected, but against …
The Relative Frequency Of Crossing Over In Microspore And In Megaspore Development In Maize, R. A. Emerson, C. B. Hutchison
The Relative Frequency Of Crossing Over In Microspore And In Megaspore Development In Maize, R. A. Emerson, C. B. Hutchison
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
One of the early developments in the study of linkage in Drosophila was the discovery that the phenomenon of crossing over is confined to the female sex (Morgan 1912). The fact that no crossing over occurs in the male Drosophila holds true not only for sex-linked genes but for factors in the autosomes as well and is so well established that it affords a most convenient method of determining to which of the different linkage groups a new factor belongs.
The same phenomenon, but with the sexes reversed, obtains in the silkworm moth. Tanaka (1914, 1915) has found from back-cross …
Bulletin No. 177 - Some Types Of Irrigation Farming In Utah, E. B. Brossard
Bulletin No. 177 - Some Types Of Irrigation Farming In Utah, E. B. Brossard
UAES Bulletins
As ordinarily used "type of farming" suggests general contrasts in the nature of farm business. The bases used in making these contrasts are: (1) sources of farm income, (2) number of farm enterprises, (3) amount of labor, capital, and management applied to each acre of land, and (4) farm practice with reference to maintenance of soil fertility. When based on sources of farm income, farms are classified as grain farms, hay farms, fruit farms, dairy farms, etc., according to the proportionate magnitude of the income from the different sources. When the number of farm enterprises is used as the basis, …
Bulletin No. 176 - Potato Improvement By Hill Selection, George Stewart
Bulletin No. 176 - Potato Improvement By Hill Selection, George Stewart
UAES Bulletins
Potatoes are such an important food and are grown on so many farms in Utah that any method of permanently improving the crop is highly desirable. Commercial producers can of course capitalize any practical method of potato improvement.
This field of experimentation is not new, for many workers have attempted to improve the potato crop by selection. Success, however, has been neither uniform nor always appreciable; many of the experiments were of short duration, and many were not conducted on a sufficiently large scale to be good tests. It is apparent from this meager statement that the possibilities" of potato …
