Bulletin No. 210 - The Mineral Content Of Grains, J. E. Greaves, C. T. Hirst May 1929

Bulletin No. 210 - The Mineral Content Of Grains, J. E. Greaves, C. T. Hirst

UAES Bulletins

It is generally recognized that shrunken, frosted, or smutty grain is inferior to sound, clean, plump grain. Much has been done on the protein content of grain, and the best millers today purchase grain for its protein content. Few give any consideration to its minerals. Yet do two bushels of sound, plump, clean grain of known protein content grown under the same or different conditions, have the same mineral content? If not, it is of importance to both the producer and consumer: to the consumer because it governs the nutritive value of the product; to the producer because it represents …

Bovine Tuberculosis, L. Van Es Jan 1929

Bovine Tuberculosis, L. Van Es

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The development of the present-day knowledge of the tuberculoses of animals is so intimately associated with that pertaining to the human form of the disease that the latter needs to be included in the historical considerations, without which it would be difficult to view any phase of the subject in a comprehensive manner.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Light in its various phases exerts a marked influence on the functional as well as the physical structure of all living matter. The phenomena of light involves two theories: (1) the wave or electro-magnetic theory conceiving light as consisting of electric emanations or waves of various frequencies and intensities given off from many substances. (The principle source of light as thus conceived is the sun with its estimated temperature of 10,000 F.); (2) the quantum theory which conceives light as a factor involved in ionization in chemical reactions (negative electrons are ejected from a surface of metallic iron when a …

Torynobelodon Loomisi, Gen Et. Sp. Nov., Erwin H. Barbour

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

The group of proboscideans which we have called the shovel-tuskers or Amebelodonts, was announced in June, 1927,1 following the discovery of Amebelodon fricki. In the field season of 1928, two additional species were found which are represented by mandibular tusks. One of these is a tip of a large and unique tusk, numbered 2-3-9-28, S. and L., the collectors being Bertrand Schultz and John LeMar, both of the class of 1931, the University of Nebraska. It was found within 200 to 300 yards of the spot on his farm where Mr. A. S. Keith, Freedom, Frontier County, Nebraska, found …

Some Aspects Of Soil Moisture In The Forest, Ian J. Craib Jan 1929

Some Aspects Of Soil Moisture In The Forest, Ian J. Craib

Yale School of the Environment Bulletin Series

By determining the moisture content of carefully selected soil samples taken at various depths down to three feet, the moisture content of soils in the forest and in the open have been compared. The soils investigated were similar in their mechanical properties. Part I is an investigation of the effect of forest cover on the amount of water in the soil over the growing season and its availability. Part II is an investigation of the effect of root competition on the available water supply of forest soils.

Bulletin No. 207 - The Physical Cure Character Of Milk And Its Relationship To The Digestability And Food Value Of Milk For Infants, R. L. Hill Jun 1928

Bulletin No. 207 - The Physical Cure Character Of Milk And Its Relationship To The Digestability And Food Value Of Milk For Infants, R. L. Hill

UAES Bulletins

In the feeding of infants,' cows' milk is the best and most common substitute for human milk. In the feeding of delicate infants, however, considerable difficulty is often experienced from its use. The ideal substitute for mothers' milk has not been found, and most of the clinical effort has been directed towards the modification of cows' milk for infants.

Comparatively little research has been done on the difference in the digestibility and food value of milks from different cows for the infant. It is a well-known fact that the curd of cows' milk forms in a tough mass which varies …

Bulletin No. 206 - Treehopper Injury In Utah Orchards, Charles J. Sorenson Jun 1928

Bulletin No. 206 - Treehopper Injury In Utah Orchards, Charles J. Sorenson

UAES Bulletins

Treehopper injury is a problem that has given many fruit growers in Utah some concern during recent years. These people have observed that their young fruit trees and the twigs and smaller branches of older trees have been attacked during the autumn of each year in a manner that produced numerous cuts which later formed scars. The trees frequently became unthrifty, and more or less deformed and stunted, as a result of these annual attacks.

The investigation reported in this publication was made for the purpose of ascertaining the present status of the treehopper situation in Utah orchards.

Bulletin No. 205 - The Beet Leafhopper In Utah: A Study Of Its Distribution And The Occurrence Of Curly-Top, George F. Knowlton

UAES Bulletins

The sugar-beet industry of Utah, and many other western states, has suffered enormous losses from curly-top. Under natural conditions this disease is transmitted, so far as known, solely through the feeding of the beet leafhopper, Eutettix tenellus (Baker), the so-called "white fly." The serious damage of 1924 and 1926 has especially emphasized the necessity for more knowledge concerning the problem.

The Anatomy Of The Honeybee, Carol M. Steib Jun 1928

The Anatomy Of The Honeybee, Carol M. Steib

Bachelors’ Theses

The honeybee has lived In a society under such complex laws and has executed such varied and difficult labors that it has attracted the attention of men and women from the very earliest of times. Aristotle, Cato, Varro, Pliny, Columella, Pollodius, all studied the bee; as also did Arlstomachus (who, if we are to believe Cicero, watched them for forty-eight years) and Phylisius whose writings have been lost.

Circular No. 71 - Weeds: Losses, Agencies In Distribution, Nature, And Control, William Peterson, D. C. Tingey May 1928

Circular No. 71 - Weeds: Losses, Agencies In Distribution, Nature, And Control, William Peterson, D. C. Tingey

UAES Circulars

There are in Utah a number of weeds considered to be unusually persistent and difficult to eradicate once they have become established. The most common in this group are wild morning glory, whitetop, Canada thistle, perennial sow thistle, and Russian knapweed, the last being one of comparatively recent introduction. The weeds in this group are quite generally feared and much talked of by farmers. They are feared because, if allowed to persist, they usually take possession of the soil and hinder the growth of farm crops. The discouraging fact about these weeds is their spread. Old infested areas are increasing …

The Anatomy Of The Timber Rattlesnake, Ruth H. Heinemann May 1928

The Anatomy Of The Timber Rattlesnake, Ruth H. Heinemann

Bachelors’ Theses

Snakes are the most highly specialized of all reptiles. The absence of limbs, in itself, is a great specialization. They possess a great modification of the jaws which enables them to engulf large prey entire. Probably the most out standing specialization is the remarkable modification of dentition in the venomous snakes. The so-called fangs are nothing more than teeth modified to a great degree.

Circular No. 69 - Clean Milk And Its Production, E. G. Carter Feb 1928

Circular No. 69 - Clean Milk And Its Production, E. G. Carter

UAES Circulars

Successful dairy farming is fast growing into an exacting profession, and in order to be successful the dairy farmer must not only recognize the value of good clean milk but must know how to produce it as well. Good milk, good butter, and good cheese are acknowledged to be in great demand, and each brings fair financial returns.

Since the beginning of the dairy industry one of the big difficulties has been that of obtaining clean milk and cream. By applying the best scientific methods in the manufacture of dairy products the ill effect of impure milk can be partly …

Circular No. 70 - The Agricultural Outlook For Utah, P. V. Cardon, W. P. Thomas

UAES Circulars

In preparing the following statement of Utah's relation to the national agricultural outlook for 1928, the writers have been guided by three fundamental considerations : (a) Utah is a livestock state; (b) feed production is the basis of Utah agriculture; and (c) definite physical, geographic, and economic limitations govern Utah's production of crops other than feed crops.
