Notes On The Owls Found In Lincoln County, Nebraska, Wilson Tout
Notes On The Owls Found In Lincoln County, Nebraska, Wilson Tout
Papers in Ornithology
During more than a quarter of a century I have been making notes and collecting information about the Owls of Lincoln county and it seemed an opportune time to put this information into print that it might be available to those who are interested in birds and serve as a basis for further study and amplification. Lincoln County is not usually considered a favorable place for Owls to reside on account of the absence of heavy timber over most of its area. But the nine varieties listed will probably be extended as more observations are made by those who are …

Probolitrema Tomalis Sp. Nov. (Trematoda) From Dasyatis Dipterura And Brachylaemus Virginianus (Dickerson) (Trematoda) From Didelphys Virginiana, Elsie Mae Graves
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The genus Probolitrema was established by Looss (1901) in recognition of the location of vitellaria and multiple testes entirely outside the extra caecal field in Anaporrhutum richardii Lopez (1888) which differentiated it from A.albidum Ofenheim (1900) with the vitellaria within and the testes partly within and partly without the intra-caecal field. Ofenhein had created the genus Anaporrhutum for the above two species because of their multiple testes. A.albidum was a new species described by him; his A.richiardii Lopez specimens he considered to be the same species as Distomum richiardii Lopez, described in detail by Monticelli in 1893. Looss pointed out …

Biometrical Study Of Goniobasis Comalensis Pilsbry From Two Diverse Habitats, Elmer P. Cheatum, E. D. Mouzon, Jr.
Field and Laboratory
Much has been written on the part played by the environment in changing secondary characters of the more plastic invertebrates….During February, 1934, a collecting trip was made to San Marcos, Texas, where two contrasting aquatic habitats were found, both of which were inhabited by the branchiate snail Goniobasis comalensis. Several hundred individuals were collected from each habitat, the shells measured, and a statistical study made of size differences.
Further Observations On The Sex-Ratios Of Terrestrial Isopods, S. W. Geiser
Further Observations On The Sex-Ratios Of Terrestrial Isopods, S. W. Geiser
Field and Laboratory
Vandel contends that in terrestrial isopods the females are more numerous than males in collections. He gives tables showing the sex-ratios of collections of ten species…. Although Vandel finds that the sex-ratios of adult collections are one-sided in favor of the female sex, he nevertheless finds that in cultures of the species which he made, the sexes were about equally represented at birth, and in young populations. This accords with the findings of the present writer, who found the sexes approximately equal in very young populations of Armadillidium vulgare and Porcellio laevis.

Stability Of Climax Prairie And Some Environmental Changes Resulting From Breaking, J. E. Weaver, Evan Flory
Stability Of Climax Prairie And Some Environmental Changes Resulting From Breaking, J. E. Weaver, Evan Flory
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Continued study of the great midcontinental grasslands of North America throughout a period of years has impressed the writers with the high degree of stability of the climax prairie. This phenomenon has been carefully considered in a study of the types of prairie in the Missouri Valley over an area of several thousand square miles centering in eastern Nebraska but including five neighboring states. Present studies on the deterioration of the prairie under the impact of grazing, and changes in edaphic and atmospheric environment with the breaking and cropping of the land have further emphasized the stabilizing influence of a …

Studies On A Cave Fish Of Uncertain Classification, Jennie Miller Orr
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The specimens studied during this investigation were taken incidentally during a general faunal survey of certain peculiar streams flowing from underground channels. On casual examination it was evident that they belonged to the cave fish group but were not the well known almost colorless blind variety. After checking the descriptions in various vertebrate manuals it appeared that they were probably a new species.
There are three groups of cave fishes, the non-blind, the semi-blind and the blind. Chologaster, or the Rice Field Minnows of South Carolina, are members of the non-blind group. Forbesichthys of southern Illinois and Kentucky is an …

The Vitamin E Content Of Certain Dairy Feeds, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
A study was made of the vitamin E content of each of the ingredients of our dairy herd ration, excepting the salt, lime, and bone meal. Female rats which were able to conceive but unable to reproduce when fed a diet deficient in vitamin E were fed the various feeds as a source of vitamin E during a second breeding period. The presence of vitamin E in a feed was thus shown by the ability of the female to cast a litter. The vitamin E content of bran, shorts, linseed oil meal, hominy feed, white corn, yellow corn, cottonseed meal, …

Some Observations On Humidity And Weight Loss In The Incubation Of Turkey Eggs, F. E. Mussehl, C. W. Ackerson
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
1. Turkey eggs which are incubated under chicken hens lose from 11 to 13 per cent of their original weight during the first 24 days of incubation. Small turkey eggs lose relatively more weight than large eggs incubated under the same conditions. 2. Considerable variation was observed in the weight loss during the first 24 days of incubation of eggs of approximately the same size when incubated in the same environment. The range was from 7 to 24 per cent of the original weight. Differences in shell texture may account for these variations, although care was taken to select only …

The Bottom Fauna Of Drakes Creek: A Quantitative & Qualitative Study, Theodore Milam
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
An ecological study of the invertebrate animal forms exclusive of microscopic forms found in the waters of Drakes Creek in Warren County, Kentucky, was undertaken for the purpose of determining both the nature and amount of invertebrate animal life found in these waters. The Kentucky Fish and Game Commission has made several plantings of game fish in the waters studied. However, the fishermen report no appreciable increase of the fish life in these waters. In view of the failure of the fish to propagate properly in these waters, and because the other physical factors appeared favorable for the propagation of …
Effects Of Inflation And Deflation Upon Nebraska Agriculture, 1914 To 1932, H. Clyde Filley
Effects Of Inflation And Deflation Upon Nebraska Agriculture, 1914 To 1932, H. Clyde Filley
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
This study attempts to give the effects of war-time inflation and the subsequent deflation upon Nebraska agriculture. It presents statistical evidence of what happened. It is too late to prevent the present depression. Information concerning the situation may aid in promoting recovery. It is hoped that a knowledge of the inflation of 1916 to 1920 and the depression following may aid in avoiding the making of similar errors in the future.
History Of Farm Land Prices In Eleven Nebraska Counties 1873-1933, Eleanor H. Hinman
History Of Farm Land Prices In Eleven Nebraska Counties 1873-1933, Eleanor H. Hinman
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The subject of farm land price is intimately intertwined with the economic and social welfare of farm people, and even with the financial structure of the nation. A detailed, year-by-year record of farm land sales and prices from several typical Nebraska farming areas over a 61-year period may throw light on the behavior of land values in the counties studied and in similar farming areas, and may help towards supplying a better basis for land price analysis and forecasting than now exists. This bulletin presents such a record for 11 Nebraska counties. It is based on 76,544 true sales of …

Observations On The Gross Anatomy Of The Venous System Of Adult Chelonia, James S. Kain
Bachelors’ Theses
The turtle is a reptile belonging to the order Chelonia. Because it is so very abundant and its size so convenient it has been much used for class work and to a certain extent has been studied rather thoroughly by private workers. Each one, however, stressing his or her own particular point of interest especially, the turtle is attractive to students of Comparative Anatomy because of the fact that it has retained more of the primitive characteristics of the ancestral form from which the mammals are descended than any other readily available reptile.

Studies On The Anatomy Of The Arterial System Of The Turtle, Sylvester J. Schroeder
Bachelors’ Theses
Turtles are reptiles in which the body is wide and short, and is enclosed in a shell composed of a dorsal shield, the carapace, and a ventral shield the plastron. The shell of three of the species is composed of large external, epidermal, horny plates. These latter consist, in the carapace, of the flattened ribs and the flattened trunk vertebrae which coalesce with overlying dermal bony plates, and are surrounded on the circumference of the shell by a series of marginal dermal bony plates; in the plastron they consist of exclusively dermal plates, there being no sternum. The carapace and …

Antidating written human history the dung of animals, chalk, marl, wood ashes and other substances were probably used to increase the productivity of the soil. These practises found their way into the earliest farming activities of the Chinese, Persians, Greeks and Romans. (3)(11) In the Hebrew scriptures mention is made of the "Dung Gate". (10) This was undoubtedly a place given to the marketing of manures. That manure was used as a soil amendment in Asia Minor in Biblical times is not questioned. The famous Roman agricultural writer Cato (234 B.C.) wrote at length on manures and their handling. He …

Bulletin No. 248 - Results Of Seven Years Of Egg-Laying Contests, Byron Alder
UAES Bulletins
The Utah Intermountain Egg-Laying Contests were begun on November 1, 1924, and continued until October 23, 1931. Up until this time the interest in poultry-breeding for egg production in this intermountain section was extremely limited; furthermore, there were few flocks on which trap nest and pedigree breeding records were kept.
The primary object in conducting these contests was to stimulate an interest in the breeding of better poultry. An egg-laying contest makes it possible for the poultry raiser, trying to get started in poultry-breedng work on a limited scale, to obtain accurate individual egg records of some of his pullets …
