Bulletin No. 257 - Factors Promoting Positive Health In School Children, Almeda Perry Brown Aug 1935

Bulletin No. 257 - Factors Promoting Positive Health In School Children, Almeda Perry Brown

UAES Bulletins

It is necessary only to observe groups of rural children to become convinced that too many of them are deprived of their rightful heritage of positive health.

Why children playing together, working together, under conditions which apparently vary but little, should exhibit such wide variation in health conditions, is a question of vital importance to all concerned with the care of children.

It was with the hope of finding some of the causes behind these variations that the present study was initiated. That the problem is complex and intricate was fully realized, and no hope was entertained that its solution …

A Comparative Histological Study Of The Eyes Of Certain Cave Animals, William Owsley Aug 1935

A Comparative Histological Study Of The Eyes Of Certain Cave Animals, William Owsley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

As early as 1850 many reports of observations of the blind cave animals were made by both scientific and popular writers. Tellkempf, Agassiz, Forbes and Silliman were some of the earlier scientists who studied the eyes of cave animals. Eigenmann made a histological study of the cave vertebrates of America. In a study of Forbesichthys papilliferus, a semi-blind cave fish, Jennie Miller Orr found important structural modifications in the eyes of this species. Since no comparative histological studies of the eyes of cave animals seem to have been made, it was decided to make such a study with a view …

The Vitamin A Content Of Sour Cream Butter, Sweet Cream Butter, And Margarines, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis Aug 1935

The Vitamin A Content Of Sour Cream Butter, Sweet Cream Butter, And Margarines, I. L. Hathaway, H. P. Davis

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Nineteen samples of margarine were obtained from Illinois, Ohio and Nebraska. They were analyzed chemically and the vitamin A content of each one was compared with that of either sour-cream or sweet-cream butter. The fat content of the butter samples varied from 80.2 to 81.5 per cent, while the fat content of the margarine samples varied from 78 .3 to 89.2 per cent. From the results it was evident that these samples of margarine were very poor sources of vitamin A when compared with butter. One of the margarine samples caused an average gain of 10 grams per rat and …

Some Monogenetic Trematodes From The Galapagos Islands And The Neighboring Pacific, Frank Grose Meserve Aug 1935

Some Monogenetic Trematodes From The Galapagos Islands And The Neighboring Pacific, Frank Grose Meserve

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Introduction

Trematodes are parasitic, unsegmented, flattened (rarely cylindrical) worms. They have ventral, anterior, posterior or median attachment organs. The sense organs are poorly developed. The mouth is terminal or ventral and subterminal. The intestine is usually forked with or without lateral branches. The animals, with few exceptions, are hermaphroditic. The ovary is usually single. They have one, two, or more testes. The development is direct with only one host in the ectoparasitic Monogenea and indirect in the Digenea which have two or more hosts. The digenetic trematodes usually parasitize vertebrates which serve as their primary hosts and invertebrates (Mollusca) which …

Notes On The Distribution Of Amphibia And Reptilia Of Ellis County, Kansas, Lawrence A. Brennan May 1935

Notes On The Distribution Of Amphibia And Reptilia Of Ellis County, Kansas, Lawrence A. Brennan

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Comparatively little has been done concerning the listing or recording of the Amphibia and Reptilia of Ellis County, Kansas. What records there are of the species are for the most part unpublished. Early papers dealing with Kansas herpetology are few in number. Little has been done in Ellis and the surrounding counties, so there seems to be a need for such an ecological study as has been carried out in this paper “Notes on the Distribution of Amphibia and Reptilia of Ellis County, Kansas . " The objectives kept in mind in preparing this report have been to attempt to …

The Weather Effect On The Characteristic Protein Values In Wheat, Mary Margaret Murphy May 1935

The Weather Effect On The Characteristic Protein Values In Wheat, Mary Margaret Murphy

Bachelors’ Theses

Scientific investigation has proved conclusively that the protein content of the wheat kernel is the most important factor in determining the quality of the flour obtained. A high protein wheat is used for flour for bread making, and a low protein wheat for pastry flours. The quality of the protein must be determined by baking experimental loaves.

The year 1934 was a year of drought. In all parts of the country the wheat crops were affected by the lack of rainfall; hence, the protein value of the wheat must necessarily have been affected in some manner. The United States Department …

The Circulatory System In The Extremities Of The Domestic Cat From A Gross Anatomical Standpoint, Harold Liebenstein May 1935

The Circulatory System In The Extremities Of The Domestic Cat From A Gross Anatomical Standpoint, Harold Liebenstein

Bachelors’ Theses

The mammalian circulatory system serves the prime purpose of furnishing the body with food to carry on its functions. The domestic cat is closely related anatomically and physiologically to the human being, which makes it an excellent animal for laboratory work or experimental purposes.

Bachelors’ Theses

Nicotine or nicotin, named from Jean Nioot who introduced the tobacco plant into France in 1565 is the characteristic alkoloid of the tobacco plant, Nicotiana tobacum, in all parts of which it occurs to the extent of from six tenths of one per cent, to four and eight tenths per cent.

The Inheritance Of Some Human Traits, Robert H. Crawford May 1935

The Inheritance Of Some Human Traits, Robert H. Crawford

Bachelors’ Theses

Although the proper collection and observation of necessary data with reference to the application of Mendel's laws of heredity to man has been brief, it has disclosed evidence significant enough to make it appear highly probable that many of the characters in man follow these laws as well as do the traits of lower animals.

The object of this thesis was to determine whether or not certain human traits were inherited, the mode of their transmission from parent to offspring, and, if possible, the establishment of any proof of linkage in the human line.

A Taxonomical, Morphological And Distributional Study Of The Utah Cyprinidae /|Cby Sheldon Phipps Hayes, Sheldon Phipps Hayes

Theses and Dissertations

The hydrography of Utah may be thought of as being roughly divided into two large general drainage areas--, the Colorado River draining the eastern halt and southern portion ot the state and the Bonneville Drainage encompassing the remaining part of it. Earlier workers have listed eight genera and fourteen species of minnows occuring in Utah. Of these this report includes seven genera and ten species found within the borders of our state.

A Survey Of The Literature Dealing With The Calcium-Phosphorus Metabolism Of Normal Children, Albertine Appy Noecker May 1935

A Survey Of The Literature Dealing With The Calcium-Phosphorus Metabolism Of Normal Children, Albertine Appy Noecker

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study is to collect and organize all data available to the investigator on the subject of calcium and phosphorus requirements for normal children. Since it is the business of nutrition to maintain health and prevent disorders, leaving the cure of disorders to the medical profession, this study deals with the calcium and phosphorus metabolism of normal children and avoids going into the pathological phases, taking up rickets and tetany only in so far as prevention is concerned.

If this study has any value it lies in the fact that the findings of investigators seem to be …

Duststorms In The Southwest, John D. Boon Apr 1935

Duststorms In The Southwest, John D. Boon

Field and Laboratory

During the last few months there have [been] many duststorms in the southwestern part of the United States. Almost every day the newspapers have carried stories of these disturbances. It is difficult to tell whether or not these storms are becoming more frequent than they were in the early days, since accurate records of their occurrence and severity are of recent origin. However, there are some very definite reasons for thinking that they are becoming more frequent.

Determining The Sex Of Day Old Chicks, H. E. Alder Mar 1935

Determining The Sex Of Day Old Chicks, H. E. Alder

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

More than 2,000 years ago people were interested in determining the sex of the embryo in hatching eggs and the sex of day-old chicks. No method of determining the sex of day-old chicks (except of course in sex-linked chicks) was of the slightest value until the Japanese method was discovered and developed. About 1925 Japanese scientists discovered the presence of a rudimentary copulatory organ located on the ventral rim of the cloaca which was present in all day-old males and only a few day-old females.

Annual Fodder And Silage Crops For Nebraska, W. E. Lyness, T. A. Kiesselbach Mar 1935

Annual Fodder And Silage Crops For Nebraska, W. E. Lyness, T. A. Kiesselbach

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The present shortage in the seed supply of all standard varieties of annual forage crops has created a special demand for information concerning their relative productivity and the possible use of substitute crops. This circular reports the yields secured from such crops at the Experiment Station, in an effort to help farmers reach a decision as to which crops should be grown this year for roughage, and which ones especially should have their seed supply increased for use in future years. Feed value and production costs as well as yields should be taken into consideration by the grower.

Bulletin No. 254 - Summer And Winter Rations For Fattening Hogs, H. H. Smith, E. J. Maynard Jan 1935

Bulletin No. 254 - Summer And Winter Rations For Fattening Hogs, H. H. Smith, E. J. Maynard

UAES Bulletins

Practically all of the 85,000 hogs on the farms of Utah (as of August 1, 1934) are in the irrigated sections of the state where they fit in well with dairying. Utah, however, is a hog-deficient area and produces about 109,000 hogs less than are slaughtered in the state for its own use. Large amounts of milk by-products such as skim milk, buttermilk, and whey are produced in Utah. Large amounts of alfalfa are also grown in the irrigated sections, thus providing excellent pasture for the growing out and feeding of market hogs. Barley is the principal feeding grain grown …

Forty-Eighth Annual Report Of The Agricultural Experiment Station Of Nebraska, February 1, 1935, W.W. Burr

Agricultural Research Division: News and Annual Reports

This report differs from previous reports in two respects: it covers experimental work up to January 1, 1935, and it includes brief abstracts of publications since the last report. Previously most of the report dealt with work done before the end of the fiscal year; that is, work done between June 30 and January 1 was not reported until over a year later, for the most part. The present report corrects that defect, and in addition the abstracts of publications will make the report useful as a reference guide to published matter.

The projects are discussed under subject headings and …

Comparison Of Runoff And Erosion In Prairie, Pasture, And Cultivated Land, J. E. Weaver, Wm. C. Noll Jan 1935

Comparison Of Runoff And Erosion In Prairie, Pasture, And Cultivated Land, J. E. Weaver, Wm. C. Noll

Papers of John E. Weaver (1884–1956)

Soil erosion resulting from runoff water has come to be recognized as a national menace. The determination and evaluation of all factors influencing runoff and erosion are studies of fundamental importance, especially insofar as they may be made to yield information upon methods of control over this insidious tendency of washing away the land.

"Fully 75 per cent of the crop-producing and grazing areas of the United States is sloping enough to set in motion, moderately or violently, these wasteful processes of accelerated soil-removal and excessive runoff. That 35 million acres of formerly cultivated land have been essentially ruined by …

Quantity Of Living Plant Materials In Prairie Soils In Relation To Run-Off And Soil Erosion, J. E. Weaver, George W. Harmon Jan 1935

Quantity Of Living Plant Materials In Prairie Soils In Relation To Run-Off And Soil Erosion, J. E. Weaver, George W. Harmon

Papers of John E. Weaver (1884–1956)

The menace of soil erosion did not appear in the west until much of the prairie was broken for cropping or weakened by continuous overgrazing. The grassland sod is a great conserver of rainfall; the amount of run-off water is relatively small, and the soil is firmly held against the forces of erosion. This study is concerned with the role that the living underground plant parts play in promoting the absorption of water by the soil, and especially their importance in reducing run-off. Their holding of the soil against the forces of water erosion has been experimentally determined. A study …
