The Influence Of Commercial Soy Bean Lecithin On The Development Of Rancidity In Lard, Casper L. Berner
The Influence Of Commercial Soy Bean Lecithin On The Development Of Rancidity In Lard, Casper L. Berner
Bachelors’ Theses
The preservation of food products is a problem which has troubled manufacturers for many years. A variety of preservatives of a poisonous nature has been used in the past but with the coming of the Pure Food Laws, the use of such toxic preservatives has been prohibited and it has become of importance to discover substances that will prevent spoiling of foods but still be non-toxic. In recent years, the use of lecithin has been advocated as a preservative for fats. Although it is absolutely non-toxic, its suitability as a preservative has been questioned. It is the purpose of this …
Practical Study Of The Musculatuer Of The Cat, Jack Lamalfa
Practical Study Of The Musculatuer Of The Cat, Jack Lamalfa
Bachelors’ Theses
The author has tried his best, in this thesis, to review, to dissect, and to make a comprehensive study of the muscles of the lower limb of the cat. With this end in view, he has taken the natural advantages present, such as text books, outlines, and charts as means of attaining it.
The anatomy of the cat’s muscles laid bare in dissection would be incomplete and inadequate without the aid of photographs and illustrations. So with the help of Charles Wilbur, B.S., a fellow student, the author succeeded in making some excellent views of the muscles of the lower …

The Anatomy, Physiology, And Histology Of The Musculature Of The Pelvic Appendages Of Rana Catesbiana, Wilfred F. Horner
Bachelors’ Theses
The muscles of the frog leg have been worked on very extensively during the last thirty-five years. The reason the frog has been subjected to such an extensive study in research is the fact of its striking resemblances to man and also the fact that they are plentiful and easy to work with in all types of experiments. The structures of a frog are well developed and prove very efficient for study.
This specific field of work was picked for this thesis because of the interest to the author, the magnitude of work done in the field, and the importance …

The Feeding Value Of Certain Duck Food Plants Of The Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge As Determined By Chemical Analysis, Dale Clair Christensen
The Feeding Value Of Certain Duck Food Plants Of The Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge As Determined By Chemical Analysis, Dale Clair Christensen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The study of bird feeding problems has become a prominent factor in wild life management. This is true especially with respect to the evaluation of recently established migratory bird refuges. In 1929 the Federal Government assumed control of a large area of land located on the Bear River Bay of Great Salt Lake for the purpose of providing a sanctuary for water fowl. Dykes were built and the areas inside these dykes flooded with fresh water from Bear River. During subsequent years aquatic and marsh plants* developed abundantly and apparently have provided satisfactory feeding and nesting grounds for migratory birds. …

The Spleen Of The Frog, Clifford F. Moran
Bachelors’ Theses
Although we of today are living In a relatively advanced state of civilization, there still remains to be solved by man many familiar mysteries. These are found not only in the physical order but in the chemical and biological as well. It seems that the greater strides man takes toward the solution of his difficulties, the more other ones crop up to plague him. With the conquering of such deadly diseases as Diphtheria, Malaria and Scarlet Fever, man once dared to dream about a universe free from sickness. Yet today we find that three others have arisen which are causing …

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
1. Two groups of 15 newly hatched chicks were fed rations differing in the composition of the protein concentrates. One lot received ration 2MFX, in which the concentrate was a mixture of meat meal and fish meal. In ration 3MFSX one-third of the meat and fish meals was replaced by soybean meal. The protein levels of the concentrates and of the rations as fed, were identical. 2. The composition of the chicks at the end of the feeding trial was determined, and the composition of the gains calculated. 3. The gain in live weight per gram of nitrogen or dry …

Each year the federal government gathers data relating to agriculture through the various departments of the United States Department of Agriculture. These data are classified and analyzed by the Bureau of Agricultural Economics at Washington and all information which may be helpful to farmers is published. For several years it has been the policy of the Department of Rural Economics and the Agricultural Extension Service of the College of Agriculture, Lincoln, to select from the federal information facts which may be especially helpful to Nebraska farmers. These facts and other economic conditions in Nebraska are published this year as the …

Report Of Progress Of The Nebraska State Museum, Erwin H. Barbour
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)
The history and development of the Nebraska State Museum since 1891 have been summarized in a preliminary manner up to 1925 in the first number of Volume I of the Bulletin of the Nebraska State Museum.1 Since 1927, the collections of the Nebraska State Museum, The University of Nebraska, have been housed in a new building, Morrill Hall, on the city campus of The University of Nebraska. It now seems fitting to report upon the exceptional progress of the past few years, and to acknowledge the fine cooperation of those who have helped to make it possible.

Root Distribution Of Trees In Relation To Soil Profile, J. E. Weaver
Root Distribution Of Trees In Relation To Soil Profile, J. E. Weaver
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
One of the pronounced trends in American forestry during the past decade has been the development of a widespread interest in soils. As a consequence to the soil as a part of the environmental complex has been attributed much greater importance than formerly in forest production. In fact, the individual horizons of the soil profile are receiving attention each as a more or less distinct habitat of that highly organized body designated as soil. Just as soil scientists, until recent years, have given inadequate attention to the factor of vegetation in the constitution and development of soils, so too little …

Root Development Of Young Delicious Apple Trees As Affected By Soils And By Cultural Treatments, W. W. Yocum
Root Development Of Young Delicious Apple Trees As Affected By Soils And By Cultural Treatments, W. W. Yocum
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Young Delicious apple trees were grown in two soil types, clay loam and loess, in eastern Nebraska, under a variety of cultural conditions. The development of roots and tops was studied for the first three years after transplanting in the orchards. In all, 73 trees were excavated.
The first two years were about normal in precipitation at Lincoln (locale of the clay loam) while at Union (locale of the loess) there was a deficit of over 9 inches each year. The third year, 1934, was one of severe drought and heat at both stations. The total rainfall deficiency for the …

Root Development Of Young Delicious Apple Trees As Affected By Soils And By Cultural Treatments, W. W. Yocum
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The major problem of this investigation was to determine the effects of different cultural treatments and soil conditions upon the depth and lateral spread of the root systems of young Delicious apple trees during the first three years in the orchard. This study was conducted during the years 1932 to 1934 inclusive.

The Utilization Of Food Elements By Growing Chicks. Iii. A Comparison Of Calcium Carbonate And Calcium Sulfate As Sources Of Calcium, C. W. Ackerson, M. J. Blish, F. E. Mussehl
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
I. The utilization of nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus was studied with two lots of growing chicks by means of growth and body-analysis experiments. One lot had calcium added to the ration in the form of sulfate and the second received calcium carbonate, the additions being made on an equivalent calcium basis so that the experimental variable was the source of the calcium. 2. The percentage rate of gain and the gain per gram of nitrogen fed were identical in the two lots. 3. No significant differences were found in the utilization of nitrogen, calcium, or phosphorus by the birds of …

Diatoms As A Source For California Petroleum: A Summary Review, Fred B. Phleger Jr., Claude C. Albritton Jr.
Field and Laboratory
The diatom has been variously regarded as the major source, as an accessory source, and as a doubtful source for California petroleum. The two main lines of evidence cited by upholders of the first view are: (1) the intimate association of diatomaceous deposits with the majority of oil producing areas in the state, and (2) the observed ability of living diatoms to manufacture oil, which under favorable conditions could be stored in contemporaneous sediments. Opposed to this view are the facts that (1) some petroliferous areas in the state produce from horizons high above the postulated diatomaceous source beds, (2) …

Color Phases In Helicina Orbiculata Tropica 'Jan' Pfr., E. P. Cheatum, Betty Watt Brooks
Field and Laboratory
An interesting shell-color phase occurs in Helicina orbiculata tropica ’Jan.’ Pfr., a small land snail found in abund ance in northeastern, southern, and central Texas. Pilsbry and Ferris have noted color variations in this species, stating that "some colonies are all white; others are mingled with red or blue shells".
