Petroglyph And Pictograph Site In The Finlay Mountains, Dodd N. Osburn

Field and Laboratory

In the Finlay Mountains at longitude 105° 39' west, and latitude 31° 23' north, Fort Hancock Sheet, Texas, there is a former Indian campsite located on the steeper face of a cuesta fronting the east. Crude natural shelters are formed by many of the boulders which bestrew the cuesta face. They were derived from the cap rock of Cox sandstone. Many of these boulders and the face of the cliff formed by the cap rock are covered with petroglyphs.

A Study Of Local Size Variations In The Prairie Pocket-Gopher (Geomys Bursarius), With Description Of A New Subspecies From Nebraska, Myron H. Swenk

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Beginning in the fall of 1913, the writer has continuously been interested in accumulating accurate body measurements, taken in the flesh, of Nebraska pocket-gophers. As a result quite an assemblage of such data has been secured. In the case of Geomys bursarius, the bulk of these data relates to specimens trapped in the vicinity of Lincoln, Lancaster County, involving to date 48 adult and 38 immature males and 50 adult and 65 immature females. Recently these measurements have been tabulated and compared with such measurements of the species as have been recorded in the literature from other parts of …

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

1. The effect of replacing the ten parts of alfalfa meal in a ration with artificially dried Sudan-grass meal on an equivalent protein basis was studied in a growth and body-analysis experiment with two lots of day-old chicks. 2. The chicks of both lots consumed equal amounts of dry matter during the feeding trial. 3. There were no significant differences in the growth rate or composition of the chicks at the end of a six weeks' feeding trial.

A Study Of The Variations In The Growth Of Blue Grama Grass From Seed Produced In Various Sections Of The Great Plains Region, Andrew Riegel Aug 1939

A Study Of The Variations In The Growth Of Blue Grama Grass From Seed Produced In Various Sections Of The Great Plains Region, Andrew Riegel

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

During the past 7 years the Great Plains Region, with its "dust bowl", has been the scene of unparalleled activity in the fields of range management and erosion control. The people of this short grass area are extremely conscious of the need for a sound, practical program of conservation that will revegetate the wasted pasture and cultivated land, which will aid materially in preserving the eroding soil. Many problems have arisen as the program of conserving the soil and the vegetation has progressed.

UAES Bulletins

Project 179 of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station - "A Study of the Agricultural Resources of Utah and their Utilization" - was set up in April 1936 as a state-wide project. The object of this project was to measure by areas the basic agricultural resources of the state and to translate the information collected into a program of more efficient use. The more specific objectives were: (1) classification of agricultural lands of Utah according to present and potential productivity and use; (2) determination of the net productive area of agricultural lands and water supply now available, or which may be …

A History Of The Changes In Population Of Certain Mammals In Western Kansas, Floyd L. Carter Jul 1939

A History Of The Changes In Population Of Certain Mammals In Western Kansas, Floyd L. Carter

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

This particular study has been restricted to certain mammals in western Kansas, including some on which there is little information, and others which observers would be most likely to notice in everyday life. For several years the writer has been vitally interested in the animal life in Kansas. Therefore, when the need for a study of western Kansas mammals was presented to him in the summer of 1936, the problem of this study was selected. It is hoped that this report will suggest to ecologists, historians, and others, further studies, including reasons for the changes here-in shown. What have been …

Plants And Animals Used As Sources Of Dye, Paint, And Skin Dressing In The Southwest, Mary Dennis Jun 1939

Plants And Animals Used As Sources Of Dye, Paint, And Skin Dressing In The Southwest, Mary Dennis

Biology ETDs

The area comprising the Southwest is somewhat disputed by different authors, but some idea of its extent and general features as well as some conception of the ethnology in relation to the tribes within the area is needed for an understanding of the scope of this investigation.

A Comparative Study Of The Skull And Long Bones Of The More Common Small Mammals Of Bernalillo County, New Mexico, Robert Theodore Fincke Jun 1939

A Comparative Study Of The Skull And Long Bones Of The More Common Small Mammals Of Bernalillo County, New Mexico, Robert Theodore Fincke

Biology ETDs

The identification of animals or parts of animals without the aid of external characteristics is confusing problem in many fields of zoology. This is especially true in some studies as life histories and the food habits of predators. A problem of this type is even more confusing in New Mexico because relatively little work has been completed on the taxonomy and the distribution of the native fauna.

Bulletin No. 288 - Draingage And Irrigation, Soil, Economic, And Social Conditions, Delta Area, Utah Division 4: Social Conditions, Joseph A. Geddes, Carmen D. Frederickson, Eldred C. Bergeson

UAES Bulletins

This study is a part of a more comprehensive one which was organized in 1928 for the purpose of ascertaining what conditions existed in bonded irrigation and drainage districts which were unable to. liquidate obligations incurred.

The first such area to be studied was the Delta Area in Millard County. This area was selected for this study because of the pressing need for more detailed and wider information than was available to either the farmers or the bondholders and because available facts based on careful study might aid in achieving fairer settlements. These data might also assist other areas in …

The Food Of The Frog, Paul Schmitt Jun 1939

The Food Of The Frog, Paul Schmitt

Bachelors’ Theses

All living organisms whether they be the smallest single cells or the largest mammals demand nourishment for their multifarious physiological processes. Popular and pseudoscientific thinkers and writers speak of nutrition in terms of food consumed, while true scientific investigators consider nutrition in relation to the actual assimilation of the components of food called proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.

The Histology Of The Grog's Tongue (Rana Pipiens), Michael William Mille Jun 1939

The Histology Of The Grog's Tongue (Rana Pipiens), Michael William Mille

Bachelors’ Theses

The tongue is generally represented in all vertebrates although it varies widely in the extent to which it is developed. Among the fish it occurs in its most primitive condition. It is called a primary tongue and is merely a fleashy fold of dense connective tissue developed from the floor of the mouth between the hyoid and mandibular arches, the hyoid frequently extending into it and supporting it. It is incapable of motion except as moved by the supporting skeleton for it lacks intrinsic muscles. It is sensory, having both tactile and gustatory functions. It is often papillose, and in …

The Austin chalk cuesta is a prominent topographic feature which trends northeast across central Texas from Austin through Waco and Dallas. The escarpment is formed through differential erosion of beds at the contact between the Austin chalk and Eagle Ford: shale, the overlying chalk forming the cuesta. The area described in this paper is situated 6 miles west of Dallas, south of the Trinity River Cross Valley.

Trichomoniasis Of The Utah Agricultural Experiment Station Dairy Herd, Rue Jensen May 1939

Trichomoniasis Of The Utah Agricultural Experiment Station Dairy Herd, Rue Jensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Bovine trichomoniasis is a venereal infection that reduces the fecundity of cattle. It is caused by Trichomonas foetus (Riedmuller), a flagellated protozoan which inhabits the genital tract, causing inflammation and partial sterility. Both sexes are susceptible to infection. In females it is usually of short duration and frequently terminates spontaneously following abortion. In males the disease has both acute and chronic stages. During the acute stage the prepucial membranes become inflamed and a muco-purulent discharge develops in which trichomonads are abundant. In the following chronic stage symptoms disappear, but the animal remains a carrier and is a dangerous source of …

Staining Techniques In The Study Of The Blood, Donald E. Winnik May 1939

Staining Techniques In The Study Of The Blood, Donald E. Winnik

Bachelors’ Theses

Since the invention of the microscope, the study of the blood and its constituents has been a major interests of histologists and hematologists. The vast amount of material written about the subject could not have been accomplished without the development and use of staining techniques which made possible a more precise observation of the nature of the blood. At the present time there are many procedures and stains which vary greatly in their application and use. It is the purpose of this thesis to review these many methods and catalogue them according to their application in the blood techniques.

The Ecology Of Agropyron Inerme On Protected And Heavily Grazed Range Land In Cache Valley, Utah, Wallace R. Hanson May 1939

The Ecology Of Agropyron Inerme On Protected And Heavily Grazed Range Land In Cache Valley, Utah, Wallace R. Hanson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During the past decade much attention has been attracted to the great range lands of the West. The inherently low productivity of these arid lands coupled with abnormal drought and constantly heavy use by livestock because of lack of grazing control, have caused these lands to become greatly depleted over most of the West. That the vegetation on most range land in the intermountain states is depleted appreciably is evident to the careful observer. Undoubtedly the vegetation of much of the range has decreased in quantity, but more serious in many cases is the decrease in quality. Valuable forage species …

The Rise And Development Of The Megagametophyte In Yucca Angustissima Engelmann, Antone W. Nisson May 1939

The Rise And Development Of The Megagametophyte In Yucca Angustissima Engelmann, Antone W. Nisson

Theses and Dissertations

The studies involved in this investigation are based upon data and materials secured in the sandy areas of Washington and Iron Counties in southern Utah. The regions in which Yucca angustissima is found have a scant vegetation, are dry, sandy to sandy loam, well-drained, and with an elevation of from 2500 to 5000 feet. Watkins (1937) worked out a very extensive report of the megagametophyte development of Yucca rupicola. He begins with the four megaspore stage, and shows next the disintegration of the three micropylar megaspores. He reported that the chalazal megaspore forms eight free nuclei, by three successive divisions, …

Amount Of Underground Plant Materials In Different Grassland Climates, S. B. Shively, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

From the highlands of central Mexico entirely across the United States and northward into Canada extends the great midcontinental area of grassland. From this central mass, prairie extends westward across Wyoming into eastern Utah, and southwestward through northern New Mexico into northern Arizona. Other grasslands in the northwest cover most of southern Idaho, a part of northern Utah, large areas in eastern Oregon and Washington, and recur in British Columbia. The Pacific prairie occupies the Great Valley of California, and the Desert Plains grassland much of southern Arizona and New Mexico and southwestern Texas. Together they constitute the Grassland or …
