Preliminary Survey Of Insect Communities On Carrion In The Keweenaw Peninsula, Mi In Early Summer, With A Focus On Dipterans, Tess A. Peterson
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
Community composition and successional information about insect communities on carrion have value in forensic entomology. Local scale data is essential for providing accurate inferences about the timing and conditions of a death based on insect presence. Insects (primarily Diptera) were collected from beef liver in the month of June, 2021, at mixed hardwood and wetland sites in Houghton County, Michigan for the purpose of establishing preliminary information on insect communities present on carrion in the Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Key dipteran groups were Calliphorids from the genera Calliphora, Lucilia, and Phormia (Diptera: Calliphoridae), which were present at high proportions …

Insects As Indicators Of Climate Change: A Literature Review, Amy Catalano
Insects As Indicators Of Climate Change: A Literature Review, Amy Catalano
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
The International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has consistently predicted rising global temperatures since it began reporting in 1988. Researchers have noted that climate extremes have been identified beginning in the 1990s and are apparent in various climate indicators. The most recent IPCC reports show that the rate of warming has sped up considerably, and that global warming will increase from pre-industrial levels by 1.5 degrees Celsius in the next 30 years, and possibly by 2 degrees C if considerable mitigation efforts are not put in place (IPCC, 2021). By 2017 global temperatures had already increased by about 1 degree …
Population Sustainability In Rural Great Plains Towns, Andrew Husa
Population Sustainability In Rural Great Plains Towns, Andrew Husa
School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications
As researchers look to define a narrative of population decline throughout the region, the rural Great Plains towns that have been able to sustain their populations and attract new residents have seemingly gone unnoticed. This article features case studies from six rural Nebraska towns that address key questions regarding the population sustainability of rural Great Plains towns. Along with a discussion on the significance of geographic location in population growth or decline, this study includes several examples of how rural towns have used their locations to their advantage, created more job opportunities, enticed new residents to move in, and/or dealt …

Variability In Antimicrobial Properties Of Multifloral Honey In Southwestern Virginia, Isabella Jessee
Variability In Antimicrobial Properties Of Multifloral Honey In Southwestern Virginia, Isabella Jessee
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The antimicrobial properties of multifloral honey have been utilized for centuries in wound healing, as well as for infection treatment and prevention. The chemical properties from the nectar source, enzymes produced by the bee, as well as the digestive activity of the microorganisms in the bee gut all contribute to the antimicrobial activity of honey. Honeybee (Apis mellifera, the western or European Honeybee) farms in four locations across southwestern Virginia (Fincastle, Covington, Troutville, and Martinsville) were visited in the fall of 2021 to collect honey (fall and spring), worker bees, and pollen pellets. Disk diffusion assays were used …
Management Of The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Halyomorpha Halys) (Hemiptera:Pentatomidae) On Small Acreage And Organic Vegetable Systems, Lauren Fann
Theses and Dissertations--Entomology
Invasive species can be very disruptive to established integrated pest management programs. They can cause increases in broad-spectrum insecticide applications with variable effectiveness to mitigate damage. However, not all introduced species develop invasive characteristics; often, many introduced species go undetected. It is not until a species begins to cause economic damage to commodities essential to humans that it becomes classified as an invasive pest. Many challenges arise with the management of invasive pests due to lack of understanding of their biology, behavior, and absence of natural enemies in their introduced range. This often results in poor management and population outbreaks …

Of Rights And Regulation, Stephen W. Sawyer, William J. Novak
Of Rights And Regulation, Stephen W. Sawyer, William J. Novak
Book Chapters
This chapter explores the development of social provisioning as a matter not of right but of democratic administration in France and the United States in the nineteenth century. The authors take issue with conventional chronologies of rights development, which see civil and political rights being developed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with social rights appearing in the twentieth. Such categories and sequencing obscure the ways in which democratic administrations took the problem of social provisioning seriously. A history of socio-economic rights cannot be distinguished from the less formal technologies of socio-economic regulation that were an integral part of the …
Shareholder Engagement In The United States, Vikramaditya S. Khanna
Shareholder Engagement In The United States, Vikramaditya S. Khanna
Book Chapters
Shareholder voting and engagement in the US have undergone substantial changes over the last 50 years. They have moved from being relatively sleepy issues to those that trigger insomnia in even the most hardened executives. The changes in the ownership structure of US publicly traded firms are probably the most important reason for the shift, but so too are rule changes that have facilitated greater shareholder activism. This chapter explores these developments while describing the rules of the road for shareholder voting in the US by focusing on Delaware jurisprudence and changes in US federal securities regulations. It also examines …
International Law Rules On Treaty Interpretation, Steven R. Ratner
International Law Rules On Treaty Interpretation, Steven R. Ratner
Book Chapters
International law is central to the interpretation of both of the Brexit-related treaties. The TCA explicitly requires the parties and any dispute settlement body to interpret it according to the rules of interpretation of public international law, notably the 1969 Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties (VCLT). The WA, and thus the Protocol, by specifying that any of its provisions concerning Union law or concepts must be interpreted in accordance with EU law (including the case law of the CJEU), implies that its many provisions not concerning EU law will need to be interpreted by the default rules of …
Resisting The Image: Heidi, Sheep And Swiss Trash, Jonathan Gosnell
Resisting The Image: Heidi, Sheep And Swiss Trash, Jonathan Gosnell
French Studies: Faculty Publications
The novel Swiss Trash, written by Dunia Miralles in 2000, interrogates stereotypes around immigration and nationhood in contemporary francophone Switzerland, with the intention of turning some notions on their head and letting others fester, uncomfortably. The French-language text underscores the divisions, the startling differences present within a seemingly perfect “Heidiland.” Its English title hints at complex and often equivocal cultural denotations extant within the Helvetic Confederation. A simultaneous reading of Swiss Trash and Heidi, of familiar Swiss citizens and intrusive immigrants, offers, this article contends, revealing visions of a dismal present/future and an idealized past. Read alongside works …
