Notes On Winter Feeding Habits Of North Texas Bobwhites, Fred H. Wagner Jun 1949

Notes On Winter Feeding Habits Of North Texas Bobwhites, Fred H. Wagner

Field and Laboratory

From the viewpoint of the field biologist, Dallas is advantageously situated; for within a radius of less than a hundred miles one may reach six different principal soil types, each the result primarily of its underlying geological formation…. The problem of which this paper is the partial result, was an attempt to note differences or similarities in the feeding habits of bobwhites in these different regions (as affected by the soils through plant relationships.)

The Disappearance Of Plant Species From The Range In Texas, V. L. Cory Jun 1949

The Disappearance Of Plant Species From The Range In Texas, V. L. Cory

Field and Laboratory

My study of the range began in 1923. Since then, under conditions of continuous (and often excessive) grazing, I have observed that certain palatable species of range plants have disappeared, and others have been severely reduced in abundance. Doubtless other species vanished before 1923, when I began my observations.

Aspen For Excelsior, Hereford Garland Jun 1949

Aspen For Excelsior, Hereford Garland

Aspen Bibliography

The use of aspen for the manufacture of excelsior is well established in the Lake States. The properties of the wood make it suitable for this general use, and there are adequate supplies available for increased productive capacity. The process of manufacturing excelsior is relatively uncomplicated, and the production equipment is simple and relatively low in cost. That the industry is not more extensive is obviously due to limitations in markets for excelsior. Expansion of the industry depends primarily upon the development of new uses and new products having excelsior as a base.

A Critical Study Of North American Cestodes Of The Genus Andrya With Special Reference To A. Macrocephala Douthitt, 1915. (Cestoda: Anoplocephalidae), Robert L. Rausch, Everett Schiller

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Eight species of cestodes belonging to the genus Andrya Railliet, 1883, have been described from North American rodents. To the present time, 6 of these have been considered valid (A. primordialis Douthitt, 1915; A. macrocephala Douthitt, 1915; A. neotomae Voge, 1946; A. microti Hansen, 1947; A. sciuri Rausch, 1947; A. ondatrae Rausch, 1948). The genus Andrya was separated by Kirschenblatt (1938) into two subgenera, depending upon the presence or absence of a prostate gland. Of the North American species, only one (A. primordialis) possesses a prostate gland. Since we are concerned essentially with the other 5 closely-related …

A New Elasmosaur From The Eagle Ford Shale Of Texas: Systematic Description, S. P. Welles May 1949

A New Elasmosaur From The Eagle Ford Shale Of Texas: Systematic Description, S. P. Welles

Fondren Science Series

The elasmosaurs were marine reptiles, plesiosaurs with extremely long necks and proportionately very small heads. The larger individuals of the Upper Cretaceous attained a length of forty feet, with necks over twenty feet long. Their limbs were so highly modified into paddles that progress on land must have been extremely difficult, if not impossible. Their long sharp teeth indicate a fish-eating habit, and this has been confirmed by the fossilized stomach contents. The fish were evidently gulped down whole and ground up in a gizzard-like organ which contained stomach stones.

A Preliminary Study Of The Siphonapterous Ectoparasites Found On The Mammals Of The Families Cricetidae And Muridae In Utah County, Vernon J. Tipton

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the species of fleas infesting the mammals of the families Cricetidae and Muridae in Utah County. This was accomplished by establishing twelve collecting stations throughout the county from which 198 mammals were collected. From these hosts, 392 fleas were collected representing three families, nineteen genera , and twenty-four species. Four species are new to the State of Utah and twenty-two species are recorded from Utah County for the first time.

The Diet And Daily Forage Consumption Of An Experimental Herd Of Sheep On Utah's Winter Range, Lee A. Sharp May 1949

The Diet And Daily Forage Consumption Of An Experimental Herd Of Sheep On Utah's Winter Range, Lee A. Sharp

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The forage produced on Utah’s winter range is generally deficient in some nutrients that are required for the phase of sheep production that takes place on these ranges. This forage need only supply little more than maintenance ration, but because of low forage production on these areas and generally low quality forage, these requirements often are not met.

Some Factors Associated With The Economic Feasibility Of Reseeding Privately-Owned Cattle Ranges In Utah, James R. Gray May 1949

Some Factors Associated With The Economic Feasibility Of Reseeding Privately-Owned Cattle Ranges In Utah, James R. Gray

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The forage depletion of western ranges which has occurred during the past century is partly the result of the belief by ranchers that the forage loss was temporary and not serious. Should more forage of a high quality be desired they thought it could be produced by reseeding the ranges. The native western forages, never abundant or luxurious by eastern concepts, nevertheless were of generally high qualities. Limited by low and erratically distributed precipitation, the sparse native forages have in many areas given way to low quality plants. These plants of low quality do not have to withstand the adverse …

The Introduced Fishes, Game Birds, And Game And Fur-Bearing Mammals Of Utah, Boris Hewitt Popov May 1949

The Introduced Fishes, Game Birds, And Game And Fur-Bearing Mammals Of Utah, Boris Hewitt Popov

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

For a number of years wildlife workers have realized the importance of the past histories of introduced species. Emphasis in recent years has been directed toward introductions because of the tremendous hunting and fishing pressures. Yearly increases in numbers of hunters and fishermen have been noted in Utah for the past forty years. It is hoped that this compilation of the histories of the introduced game and fish species of Utah will be of value to sportsmen and wildlife managers alike in planning future introductions.

The material included in this paper was obtained from United States Government reports, Utah Territorial …

Seed And Forage Production In Four Clonal Lines Of Alfalfa As Influenced By Lygus Infestation, John Keith Noyes May 1949

Seed And Forage Production In Four Clonal Lines Of Alfalfa As Influenced By Lygus Infestation, John Keith Noyes

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

No other forage crop cultivated in the United States can be used in as many ways as alfalfa. The variety of its uses make it a most useful forage crop.

The distribution of alfalfa is world wide and it plays a leading role in the production of livestock and their products. For general feeding of farm animals, alfalfa is unsurpassed. Used for pasture, it has a high capacity, which leads to large gains in grasing animals. If properly rotated and cared for, it adds nitrogen to the soil in a form that is available to plants and thereby increases crop …

On Some Grasses, Chiefly Of The Edwards Plateau Of Texas, V. L. Cory Apr 1949

On Some Grasses, Chiefly Of The Edwards Plateau Of Texas, V. L. Cory

Field and Laboratory

In 1885 the condition of my father's health obliged our family to move to a drier climate and a higher altitude. In so doing, we followed the pioneers closely enough to witness the transformation of a prairie country into a Great Plains empire devoted to the growth of a grass called wheat. Among my earliest remembrances is that of a sea of other tall grasses, principally the little blue stem.

Effect Of Grass On Intake Of Water, F. L. Duley, C. E. Domingo Apr 1949

Effect Of Grass On Intake Of Water, F. L. Duley, C. E. Domingo

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

A large proportion of the land area of the United States is in grass. With the increasing interest in soil and moisture conservation and flood control, the intake of water from rainfall continues to be an important question in connection with grassland management. As has been shown by numerous investigations, many factors affect the rate of intake of water by soils. Among these are the type of soil, character of the rainfall, and the condition of the surface. In this paper are presented the results of infiltration tests made on different types of grassland. The tests were carried out in …

An Additional Trematode From Tortugas, Florida, And A New Name For Opisthoporus Manter, 1947, Preoccupied, Harold W. Manter Mar 1949

An Additional Trematode From Tortugas, Florida, And A New Name For Opisthoporus Manter, 1947, Preoccupied, Harold W. Manter

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Professor José M. Ruiz of Sao Paulo, Brazil, has kindly called my attention to the fact that the generic name Opisthoporus Manter, 1947 had been used several times previously, a condition which I had indeed checked but thoughtlessly forgot. For Opisthoporus Manter, 1947 (nec Opisthoporus Benson, 1851; Opisthoporus Minot, 1877; Opisthoporus Fukui, 1929), the name Postporus is proposed. The two species become Postporus epinepheli (Manter, 1947) and Postporus mycteropercae (Manter, 1947).

The combination Pleurogonus candidulus (Linton, 1910) (misspelled "candibulus" in my paper) had been made in 1946 by Ruiz (1946: 295) where, however, it was first printed " …
