Field and Laboratory

The untimely death, early in 1931, of the Swedish botanist Dr. Eric Ekman was a great loss to the science of botany, and especially to Sweden. It is doubtful whethet anyone will ever match the number of discoveries of plant novelties that he made.

Studies On The Helminth Fauna Of Alaska. Xxi. Taxonomy, Morphological Variation, And Ecology Of Diphyllobothrium Ursi N. Sp. Provis On Kodiak Island, Robert L. Rausch

According to Eguchi (1934), two species of salmon (Oncorhynchus) serve as a source of human infection by a cestode identified as Diphyllobothrium latum (Linnaeus, 1758), in Japan. The possible role of these fishes in the transmission of cestodes to humans and other animals has not been investigated in North America, nor, apparently, on the Eurasian mainland. However, Ward (1930) reported unidentified Diphyllobothrium-like plerocercoids from Alaskan salmon; Simms and Shaw (1931) collected plerocercoids identified as D. cordiceps (Leidy, 1871) from Oncorhynchus kisutch (Walbaum) from lakes in Oregon; and Wardle (1932) reported plerocercoids of Diphyllobothrium spp. from O. kisutch …

SDSU Extension Circulars

After you have selected the best phonograph that you can afford, preferably one with three speeds (78 rpm, 45 rpm, and 33½ rpm), you are ready to begin your home record library. Long-playing records withstand rougher treatment than do the 78's, are easier to store, and will play up to thirty-two minutes per side without interruptions. They're not literally "unbreakable," but they are tough.

Bulletin No. 372 - The Nutritive Value Of Winter Range Plants In The Great Basin As Determined With Digestion Trials With Sheep, C. W. Cook, L. A. Stoddart, L. E. Harris

UAES Bulletins

During the winter grazing seasons from 1946 to 1953, studies were carried on throughout the desert ranges of western Utah to determine nutritive content and digestibility of range forage plants.

These desert areas receive about 7 inches of precipitation annually and the vegetation consists, chiefly, of saltbush and sagebrush types.

The average floral composition of the desert areas studied was about 74 percent browse, 25 percent grass, and 1 percent forbs. However, on some areas there was more grass than browse and, on still others, large quantities of forbs were present, primarily Russian-thistle.

Digestion trials were carried out under normal …

Bulletin No. 370 - The Superb Plant Bug, Adelphocoris Superbus (Uhler): Its Life History And Its Relation To Seed Development In Alfalfa, Charles J. Sorenson, Lowell Cutler

UAES Bulletins

Infestations of the superb plant bug, Adelphocoris superbus (Uhler), in Utah alfalfa fields first came to the attention of entomologists of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station during their investigations of the seed chalcid and lygus bug problems of alfalfa seed production in the Uinta Basin from 1926 to 1934. Because of its occurrence in considerable numbers, particularly in first crop alfalfa fields with thin stands, the superb plant bug was suspected of interfering with seed development. Consequently an investigation of the activities of this insect was begun in the summer of 1932 and continued through that of 1933.

A Critical Study Of The Genus Pantosteus (Catostomidae), Keith M. Standing Aug 1954

A Critical Study Of The Genus Pantosteus (Catostomidae), Keith M. Standing

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this paper is to critically study and analyze all species belonging to the genus Pantosteus and to determine tbe validity of the characteristics that were used to separate the genus Notolepidomyzon from the genus Pantoateus. Special reference was made to the morphology of the fontanelle and the weberian ossicles. In order to more thoroughly comprehend the reasons for Cope describing Pantosteus as a new genus and Fowler describing Notolepidomyzon as a new sub-genus and then Snyder elevating it to the status of a genus as complete a historical sketch as possible was made using all literature known …

The Succession Of Vegetation On A Southern Utah Sand Dune, Elias S. Castle Aug 1954

The Succession Of Vegetation On A Southern Utah Sand Dune, Elias S. Castle

Theses and Dissertations

The sand dunes lying ten miles northwest of Kanab in Kane County, Utah, support a sparse plant cover with four species dominating the vegetation: Psoralea stenostachys, Sophora stenophylla, Oryzopsis hymenoides, and Wyethia scabra var. attenuata. Of these Psoralea and Wyethia are endemic to the dunes or to a limited area which includes the dunes. The pineer species gain a start in the valleys between dunes and occupy the area only until sand covers them or until sand is blown away from their roots. Stabilization of the soils is not permanently in the interdune valleys and the dunes continue to wander. …
