On The Names Of Penaeus Setiferus (L.) And Penaeus Schmitti Burkenroad, L.B. Holthuis Jan 1962

On The Names Of Penaeus Setiferus (L.) And Penaeus Schmitti Burkenroad, L.B. Holthuis

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Dr. Gordon Gunter, who sent me the manuscript of his paper “Specific Names of the Atlantic American White Shrimp (Family Penaeidae)” for comment was so kind to allow me to have my reactions to it published simultaneously with it. Unfortunately I cannot agree with Doctor Gunter’s views on the scientific names that should be used for the two Atlantic species of White Shrimp.

In the first place I believe that Doctor Gunter’s suggestion that the northern species should be known at Penaeus fluviatilis Say and the southern as P. setiferus (L.) instead of respectively P. setiferus (L.) and P. schmitti …

Studies On The Gonadal Pigments Of Cryptochiton Stelleri (Middendorff), Robert Eugene Senff Jan 1962

Studies On The Gonadal Pigments Of Cryptochiton Stelleri (Middendorff), Robert Eugene Senff

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The large gumboot chiton, Cryptochiton stelleri, (Middendorf, 1846) annually undergoes a reproductive cycle terminated by spawning in the spring. Cryptochiton stelleri is one of the marine invertebrates which possess carotenoid prognosis. Cryptochiton acquired its carotenoid moiety from the algae upon which it feeds. Following digestion carotenoids are transported to various sites in the body. The mechanisms and routes of this transport, as well as the eventual fate of the carotenoids in nutrition, are unknown. Perhaps storage in the animal occurs because of an inability to eliminate the carotenoids. On the other hand, the presence of carotenoids in the gonads would …

The Esterification Of 1, 3-Butanediol And Phenyl Methyl Carbinol, M. Dale Hawley Jan 1962

The Esterification Of 1, 3-Butanediol And Phenyl Methyl Carbinol, M. Dale Hawley

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Naturally occurring esters are common. The esters of glycerol and organic acids, constituting vegetable oils and animal fats, are essential to many forms of life. Esters of monohydroxy alcohols and organic acids occur in fruits and flowers and are partially responsible for their characteristic odors. Modern chemical technology has lifted the class of esters to still higher levels of importance in the lives of men. By varying the reactants and the reaction conditions, many compounds of significant industrial importance have been produced. Because of this wide applicability of esters in industry, esterification, its mechanism and kinetics, is under intensive research …

Massive Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage Originating From The Cecum, C. Grodsinsky, B. E. Brush Dec 1961

Massive Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage Originating From The Cecum, C. Grodsinsky, B. E. Brush

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Six cases are reported of arterio-venous malformations of the cecum presenting with hemorrhage. Newer techniques of diagnosis and management are reviewed. These cases are of interest because of their relative uniqueness and clinical importance. The diagnosis of underlying disease in these cases is often difficult. Massive bleeding, if not controlled, is an indication for immediate operation. Recurrent bleeding, even if previously controlled, can also be considered a surgical indication.

Factors Affecting The Financial Progress Of Dryland Farmers In Central Nebraska, 1924 To 1956, Roger H. Willsie, H. W. Ottoson

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The financial progress of farmers is affected by many factors. Some of these factors were examined for their effects on farmers in the Nebraska Plains-Cornbelt Transition Area. Factors studied were: an index of opportunity to save, size of farm, size of livestock enterprise and education.
