Growth Study Of Young Gizzard Shad, George Pahl, Gordon Willfahrt Jan 1962

Growth Study Of Young Gizzard Shad, George Pahl, Gordon Willfahrt

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

This investigation was part of a general study aimed at shedding light upon the role of the gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) as a forage fish of certain game fish species. Recent changes in the populations of such game fish species as the walleye ( Stizastedion vitreum), northern pike ( Esox lucius) , and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) in the upper Mississippi River suggest that the gizzard shad population might have an important bearing on the present situation. The purpose of this investigation was to study the growth rates of the gizzard shad in the Upper Mississippi River during their first …

The Land-Grant Movement And Its Influence On Scientific Agriculture In Minnesota, Bill W. Kennedy Jan 1962

The Land-Grant Movement And Its Influence On Scientific Agriculture In Minnesota, Bill W. Kennedy

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Agriculture is the most basic of all human enterprises. Quantity and quality, as related to food production, are founded upon principles of science; a situation whereby man can use his own ingenuity to instrument selected benefits by modifying the course of nature. History provides evidence of a correlation between development of a primitive agriculture and a numerical increase in human population. Furthermore, records of the past show that food supplies have delimited man's geographic distribution, frequently have directed the policies of his government, and ultimately have seemed to mark the boundaries of his social progress. In modern times the United …

The Fauna And Flora Of Horn Island, Mississippi, E. Avery Richmond Jan 1962

The Fauna And Flora Of Horn Island, Mississippi, E. Avery Richmond

Gulf and Caribbean Research

From 26 February 1944 until 4 February 1945, I was stationed with the U. S. Army on Horn Island, Mississippi, and decided to observe and record the animals and plants existing there. At the time, it seemed that little attention had been devoted to the wildlife of this island, but eventually it became apparent that some studies had been made. However, many of the observations have not been published and many of the records of the flora and fauna living on and around the island are scattered and unavailable. The most outstanding papers include those of Lloyd and Tracy (1901), …

Specific Names Of The Atlantic American White Shrimp (Family Penaeidae), Gordon Gunter Jan 1962

Specific Names Of The Atlantic American White Shrimp (Family Penaeidae), Gordon Gunter

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Penaeid shrimp are of special interest to zoologists for several reasons, one being the fact that they are unique among the decapod Crustacea in having a nauplius larval stage, which is otherwise found only in lower groups.

The shrimp catch of the south Atlantic and Gulf coasts in 1360 amounted to one-fifth of the total value of all fishery products of the United States (Power, 1961), and the shrimp fishery is the most valuable one in the country. The catch depends almost wholly upon three species, Penaeus aztecus Ives, P. duorarum Burkenroad and P. setiferus (Linnaeus) , according to current …

Pigs On The Dairy Farm : Cutting Costs To Meet Low Prices, R A. Bettenay

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

As all dairy farmers know, the market prices of pigs tends to fluctuate, depending on supply and demand, in a manner which is very hard to predict.

At a time when prices are low there are several things which the dairy farmer can do to continue operating, although at a reduced margin.

Detergents For The Dairy Farm, H Maslin Jan 1962

Detergents For The Dairy Farm, H Maslin

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

CLEANLINESS in both the physical and bacteriological sense is essential to the production of high quality dairy products, and high quality in these products is essential to both the health of the community and the successful and economic operation of the industry.

Detergents have an important place in maintaining dairy hygiene—but they must be properly used if they are to be really effective.

In this article Dairy Instructor H. Maslin, M.D.D., describes the qualities of a good dairy detergent and explains how it should be fitted into the regular cleaning routine.

Feeding pastured calves protein supplements weekly instead of daily during the winter made little difference in either winter or summer gains, according to research results to date.

Two sources of protein were used in the trial. (I) Second cutting alfalfa hay was fed at the rate of four pounds per head daily. One group of calves was fed four pounds per head daily and one group was fed 28 pounds per head once each week. (2) Forty percent protein, pellets or cake, was fed at the rate of one pound per head daily. One group was fed one pound per …

Conclusions

Sarcocystis tenellainfects sheep in southeast Kazakhstan starting in their second month of life. As the sheep age the extent and intensity of infection grows, by the tenth or eleventh month, 100% of the sheep are infected. Adult sheep more than 5 years old are all infected with sarcosporidia.

As the level of fatness decreases the extent and severity of sarcosporidial infection rises.

Females become infected oftener and more heavily than males.

Infection of sheep by sarcosporidia occurs throughout the year in southeast Kazakhstan, with a rise in the spring-summer and early autumn periods; its prevalence is somewhat less …

Review Of Sex Ratios And Age Ratios In North American Ducks, Paul A. Johnsgard

Papers in Ornithology

This bulletin is by far the most elaborate and comprehensive of any of the publications dealing with waterfowl age and sex ratios that have appeared to date, and represents the presentation and analysis of sex and age ratio data accumulated by the Illinois Natural History Survey over the last 24 years. The several people concerned are to be congratulated for bringing this material into publishable form, and it is commendable that the National Science Foundation undertook the printing costs of this extensively tabulated and illustrated bulletin.

Conclusions

Farm animals in southeast Kazakhstan are widely infected with sarcosporidia: 96.9% of the sheep, 88% of the cattle, 70% of the camels, and 40% of the swine.

The muscles most often and most heavily infected are: in sheep, the heart, diaphragm, and median buttock muscle; in cattle, the heart and esophagus; in camels, the esophagus, diaphragm, and median buttock muscle; in swine, the heart, diaphragm, and median buttock.

The most objective data on infection of animals can be obtained by studying a minimum of 3 or 4 muscles of different muscular systems simultaneously.

Heavy infection of muscles by sarcosporidia, …

Studies On Parorchis Acanthus (Trematoda: Digenea) As A Biological Control For The Southern Oyster Drill, Thais Haemastoma, Nelson R. Cooley

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Events in the attack on the southern oyster drill, Thais haemastoma, by miracidia of the digenetic trematode, Parorchis acanthus, are described.

Infection rates in wild drill populations of various Gulf Coast localities from Florida to Texas were low, but intensity of infection in individual drills was high and caused castration. Infection rates in laboratory experiments were high, but intensities were low.

Pathology of natural infections in drills is described. The infection lasts at least two years, possibly even for life.

Natural infection rates of juvenile herring gulls (Larus argentatus) , ring-billed gulls (L. delawarensis), and …

Studies On The Larval Development Of Rithropanopeus Harrisii (Gould) Of The Family Xanthidae (Brachyura), M. Roy Hood

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Because the early biologists did not see decapod larvae “in the act” of changing from one phase to another due to the fact that they were parts of planktonic collections and their parentage was unknown, each phase was given a generic and specific name of its own. Gurney (1921) did not concur with this practice, but was of the opinion that it is more profitable to assign larvae to definite genera or families, even if the reference proved to be wrong.

The chief difficulty encountered in rearing decapod larvae is the maintenance of a constant supply of suitable living food …
