Food Habits Of The Young Gizzard Shad, George Pahl, Jerry Maurer Jan 1962

Food Habits Of The Young Gizzard Shad, George Pahl, Jerry Maurer

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

In his 1920 paper, L. H. Tiffany states that the gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) offers for the game fish one of the most direct routes possible from manufacturer to consumer. In view of this conclusion, the research reported in this paper was undertaken for the purpose of determining (a) what foods are ingested by gizzard shad, and (b) if there is any correlation between food ingested and that available in greatest supply in the natural habitat. The study was centered in an area of the Mississippi River in the vicinity of Winona, Minnesota. Some additional work was done about thirty-five …

Occurrence And Severity Of The Viruses Of Strawberry In Minnesota, T. H. King, Stephen C.Y. Liu, R. L. Skiles Jan 1962

Occurrence And Severity Of The Viruses Of Strawberry In Minnesota, T. H. King, Stephen C.Y. Liu, R. L. Skiles

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Approximately 900 plants of commercially grown strawberries of 45 varieties and experimental seedling selections were collected from various parts of the state of Minnesota and indexed for the presence of viruses. Their presence in these plants was demonstrated by the appearance of symptoms in the indicator plant, Fragaria vesca L., after they were inarch-grafted. 93 % of the plants indexed were virus-infected. Based on symptoms, the viruses have been classified into 14 symptomtypes. It was found that mottle and mild yellow-edge were the two dominant viruses, whereas crinkle and vein chlorosis were of rare occurrence. There was no indication that …

A Simple Feeding Guide : Balanced Rations For Dairy Cows, K Needham

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

MANY technical articles have been written on the nutrition of dairy cattle and the methods employed in compounding a balanced ration have often been explained.

This article aims to present the principles of compounding a balanced ration in a simplified form, and suggests rations which should be easily adopted on any dairy farm.

Day-Old Fowl Pox Vaccination, P Smetana Jan 1962

Day-Old Fowl Pox Vaccination, P Smetana

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FOR many years the standard procedure for fowl pox prevention on West Australian poultry farms has been to vaccinate young stock at 12 weeks of age. Although most farmers have used this system successfully it has a number of weaknesses which can be overcome by day-old vaccination.

A new day-old fowl pox vaccine now on the market has many advantages over the normal vaccine, which is used at about 12 weeks old.

In tests at the Poultry Research Station it gave satisfactory results.

Select On Fleece Weight And Cull The Low Producers, W L. Mcgarry

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

EFFICIENT calling of maiden ewes before they join the breeding flock is an essential part of any policy of flock improvement.

Removal of the low wool producers should be one of the first considerations when culling the flock.

Webworm And The Weather, J A. Button Jan 1962

Webworm And The Weather, J A. Button

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FOR many years farmers have remarked on the cyclic occurrence of webworm outbreaks in their cereal crops.

Webworm, the State's most serious pest of cereals, has frequently assumed a role of major importance for one or two seasons, and then not been troublesome for a number of years.

A research programme being carried out by the Entomology Branch aims to give a better understanding of the effects of weather conditions on the seasonal incidence of webworm, and should lead to more effective control of this pest.

Hints On Chicken Rearing, P Smetana

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

For the next few months poultry farmers will once again be concerned with rearing chickens.

A good brooder, ample space, good sanitation, plenty of water and a balanced feed are still the essentials of successful chicken raising, says P. Smetana, B.Sc. (Agric), Acting Officer-in-Charge of the Poultry Branch.

Weaning And Weaner Management, R J. Lightfoot Jan 1962

Weaning And Weaner Management, R J. Lightfoot

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

MOST of Western Australia's Merino flock owners wean their lambs in the months of August, September and October.

Too often this is done indiscriminately to fit in with other operations, or lambs are left on their mothers for long: periods until the ewes are remated.

Selection Of Dairy Heifers, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1962

Selection Of Dairy Heifers, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE time is approaching on most dairy farms when a decision has to be made on which of the year's crop of heifers are to be retained.

Replacements are needed not only to keep up herd numbers, but also to increase the average production.

This is herd improvement—surely the aim of all dairy farmers.

Urea For Sheep And Cattle On Dry Feed, Laurence C. Snook Jan 1962

Urea For Sheep And Cattle On Dry Feed, Laurence C. Snook

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Urea can be a valuable supplement for ruminants which have to depend on dry feed low in protein.

It is not a substitute for good quality conserved fodder.

Urea is extremely poisonous if eaten in excess and great care must be taken when feeding it to stock.

There are a variety of ways in which urea can be fed and these are outlined in this article.

The Department of Agriculture's Animal Nutrition Laboratory is now carrying out trials to determine the most convenient and safest method.

Urea is most effective as a fertiliser; when used in this way it results …

Comparison Of The Protein Contents Of Bovine Zymogen Granules And Of Pancreatic Juice, Lewis Joel Greene Jan 1962

Comparison Of The Protein Contents Of Bovine Zymogen Granules And Of Pancreatic Juice, Lewis Joel Greene

Student Theses and Dissertations

A zymogen granule fraction has been isolated from bovine pancreas by differential centrifugation under conditions designed to favor homogeneity at the expense of yield. The fraction has been examined in the electron microscope and found to contain a limited amount of contamination represented by clearly recognizable microsomes and mitochondria. These contaminants could account for a part of the 5% phospholipid and 1% nucleic acid found in the fraction by Schneider partition. The zymogen granule fraction was composed mainly of protein, about 95%. The protein content of the granules has been solubilized by exposure to pH 8, after which a membrane …

The Inactivation Of Neurohypophyseal Hormones By The Toad Bladder, Arthur Karlin Jan 1962

The Inactivation Of Neurohypophyseal Hormones By The Toad Bladder, Arthur Karlin

Student Theses and Dissertations

The urinary bladder of the toad, Bufo marinus, was homogenized and the particle-free supernatant fraction prepared. Incubation of this fraction with the hormones, oxytocin, arginine vasopressin, lysine vasopressin, and oxytocin ring amide caused their inactivation. The decrease in hormone activity was roughly exponential with the time of incubation. The hormone inactivating activity of the supernatant fraction was decreased by treatment with N-ethylmaleimide, by heating to 50° C for 5 minutes, and by cold storage at -20° C. The decrease in activity due to cold storage, but not that due to either of the other two treatments, was reversed by the …

Ewe Nutrition Before And During Mating, H E. Fels Jan 1962

Ewe Nutrition Before And During Mating, H E. Fels

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Lambing percentages depend partly on the condition of ewes at mating. If it is practicable, ewes should be allowed to gain condition in the months before mating.

Where this is not practical and ewes are in a store or backward-store condition at mating, flushing should improve their fertility.

Vibriosis : Major Cause Of Infertility In Our Dairy Herds, J Craig Jan 1962

Vibriosis : Major Cause Of Infertility In Our Dairy Herds, J Craig

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

VIBRIOSIS is the main cause of infertility in West Australian dairy herds.

Its main feature is repeated return to service, and it can cause heavy financial losses.

The disease can be eliminated from a herd by the exclusive use of artificial insemination, or by the adoption of a "two herd" system.

Cobalt : Its Use To Control Wasting Disease, Laurence C. Snook Jan 1962

Cobalt : Its Use To Control Wasting Disease, Laurence C. Snook

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FOR many years it was assumed that in Western Australia cobalt deficient areas were restricted to a coastal fringe which rarely extended more than 20 miles inland.

This has proved a costly false assumption. During recent years cobalt deficiency has been diagnosed over extensive areas of inland country.
