Precautions For Day Old Fowl Pox Vaccination, P Smetana

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

DURING 1962 day old vaccination was widely adopted as a preventative measure against fowl pox.

From June, 1961, until mid-June, 1962, this procedure proved to be highly successful, but from this date onwards a proportion of treated flocks became affected by breakdowns accompanied by mortality and retarded growth.

In some cases the losses were disturbingly high.

Swing Fence Flood Crossing For Creeks In The Kimberleys, A L. Payne Jan 1963

Swing Fence Flood Crossing For Creeks In The Kimberleys, A L. Payne

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FENCING is the basis of the regeneration programme on the eroded Ord River catchment area, and the fences constructed must cross numerous creeks.

But heavy downpours of short duration characterise the wet season experienced in this area.

Because the rain falls on to bare, compacted ground, run-off is intense and gullies and creeks rise rapidly, causing serious damage to conventional fences and flood gates across watercourses.

Anticoagulants For The Control Of Rats And Mice, C D. Gooding

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

LATELY there have been many requests for information on suitable poisons to use in baiting rats and mice.

Most enquirers have stated that they "tried a certain brand of bait" and found that the rats only "ate it up and kept coming back for more."

This article on Warfarin—as a rat and mouse poison—is presented to clear up some of the problems of rodent poisoning.

Study Of Proteinuria: Isolation Of Proteins From The Nephrotic Syndrome, Merrill C. Raikes Jan 1963

Study Of Proteinuria: Isolation Of Proteins From The Nephrotic Syndrome, Merrill C. Raikes

Senior Scholar Papers

One of the most puzzling phenomena of abnormal renal physiology is the occurrence of the nephrotic syndrome. The syndrome has been defined by a collection of clinical and pathological symptoms, but there is no correlation between the clinical and pathological symptoms nor is the etiology of the syndrome known. Proteinuria is probably the most distinguishing feature in the nephrotic syndrome, and there are two possible explanations for its occurrence: (1) the excessive amounts of protein found in nephrotic urine could be due to an increased basement membrane permeability in the glomerulus of the kidney or (2) dysproteinemia. An attempt has …

Use of the ideas expressed will develop the rider's balance and form. The trained horse will be responsive and alert to the rider's demands.

Skill in use of the following horsemanship methods requires practice. The reward will follow in more enjoyment in handling a better trained horse in a …

Animal And Plant Viruses With Double-Stranded Ribonucleic Acid, Peter Gomatos Jan 1963

Animal And Plant Viruses With Double-Stranded Ribonucleic Acid, Peter Gomatos

Student Theses and Dissertations

Reoviruses occur widely in the respiratory and enteric tracts of man and animals, but their relation to disease is not clear. The present study concerns the physical-chemical characteristics and interaction with cells of reovirus type 3. A main objective of the study is to relate some of the distinguishing biological characteristics of the virus to the structure of its RNA. Reoviruses are medium-sized, icosahedral viruses with a diameter of 75 mμ, and they contain RNA. The protein coat of the virus is composed of either 5- or 6-sided prismatic subunits, 92 in all. Each structural subunit of the protein coat …

Biochemical And Biological Studies On The Growth Of An Rna Containing Bacteriophage, Stephen Cooper Jan 1963

Biochemical And Biological Studies On The Growth Of An Rna Containing Bacteriophage, Stephen Cooper

Student Theses and Dissertations

The growth of the RNA-containing bacteriophage f2 has been studied. DNA synthesis appears normal after phage infection. It is possible to dissociate the synthesis of viral RNA from the synthesis of DNA using thymine-less bacteria with fluorinated pyrimidines and Mitomycin C as inhibitors of DNA synthesis. It is concluded that the growth of f2 is independent of DNA synthesis. Since the phage RNA has no special characteristics, its synthesis has been followed by using p32 to label RNA which is eventually incorporated into virus particles. Using this method of measuring phage RNA synthesis, it has been shown that the material …

Studies On Delayed-Type Hypersensitivity Including Attempts To Effect Transfer In Guinea Pigs With Subcellular Materials, Barry R. Bloom Jan 1963

Studies On Delayed-Type Hypersensitivity Including Attempts To Effect Transfer In Guinea Pigs With Subcellular Materials, Barry R. Bloom

Student Theses and Dissertations

The initial observation that delayed-type hypersensitivity could be transferred from an allergic to a normal animal by means of living white cells was made at The Rockefeller Institute many years ago. Since that time it has been recognized that cellular transfer appears to be a unifying principle underlying both contact dermatitis and tuberculin hypersensitivity. Later studies in man have suggested that the phenomenon can be reproduced with use cell-free extracts. Similar attempts have been made with extracts of cells from sensitized guinea pigs but, there exist only three reports in the literature which claim that transfer of contact or tuberculin …

Dingo Control In The Kimberley Region, J J. Freeth

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

With all the recent dramatic developments in irrigated agriculture in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, one is apt to forget the main wealth of the district still lies in its pastoral industry.

Man, in his efforts to obtain a living from the pastoral industry, has to contend with many pests which compete with pastoral activities.

Perhaps the most serious and certainly the most sagacious pest in this region is the dingo.
