The Origin Of The Grassland Amphibian, Reptilian, And Mammalian Faunas Of The San Juan-Chaco River Drainage, Arthur H. Harris

Biology ETDs

Grasslands of the San Juan-Chaco Drainage are separated from grasslands of other New Mexican drainages by plant associations characteristic of higher altitudes. Connection with other grasslands in the Colorado Drainage is restricted to a narrow corridor in the northwest.

Grassland habitat of the present type was absent from the basin during the last major Pleistocene pluvial as were those amphibians, reptiles, and mammals closely associated with this habitat. An effort has been made to determine which of these vertebrates invaded the area from the northwest in post-pluvial time and which have entered the basin via relatively low-lying areas along the …

State colleges of agriculture, the United States Department of Agriculture, city and county libraries, chemical and agricultural magazines, chemical companies and state departments of aeronautics are a few of the sources. This volume presents these and other channels of pertinent information for the air-applicator who …

An Estimate Of Winter Utilization Of The Cedar Creek Natural History Area By The White-Tailed Deer, L. D. Frenzel Jr. Jan 1965

An Estimate Of Winter Utilization Of The Cedar Creek Natural History Area By The White-Tailed Deer, L. D. Frenzel Jr.

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Estimates of utilization of the Cedar Creek Natural History Area by the white-toiled deer (Odocoileus virginianus borealis) during the winters of 1963 and 1964 were mode using the deer-drive method. The 1964 estimate is considered the more realistic index of winter utilization by deer of the area because of increased efficiency of the drive, weather conditions favoring deer-drive technics, and agreement with results of pellet-count studies mode independently on the area.

Experimental Studies On Habitat Preference And Thermoregulation Of Bufo Americanus, B. Hemiophrys And B. Cognatus, John R. Tester, A. Parker, Donald B. Siniff

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

This paper reports on responses lo habitat and thermoregulotion exhibited by three species of toads, Bufo omericanus, B. hemiophrys and 8. cognalus, under artificial conditions. The response of the toads to sparse, medium, and dense vegetative cover was investigated by establishing artificial cover types in a sheet-metal enclosure. Each of the three species spent more time in the dense cover than i11 sparse or medium cover. A second experiment to determine if the toads would be attracted by odor to samples of mud, water, and vegetation from their respective ranges suggested that the toads moved randomly to the habitat samples. …

Fruit Growing In Western Australia, Western Australian Department Of Agriculture, Western Australian Tourist Development Authority Jan 1965

Fruit Growing In Western Australia, Western Australian Department Of Agriculture, Western Australian Tourist Development Authority

Horticulture published reports

Revised 1965.

The Mediterranean type climate of the coastal belt of the south-west of Western Australia is suitable for the commercial production of apples, pears, various stone fruits, oranges, grapes, and several other less important fruits. The warm dry summers (November-March), are too severe for the profitable production of many berry fruits and the winters too cool and wet for most tropical fruits. Figs, mulberries and olives all flourish in this climate but, for economic reasons, few are grown commercially.

A small tropical fruit industry, mainly bananas, has been established along the banks of the Gascoyne River at Carnarvon, which …

Geological And Paleontological Survey Of The Forney Reservoir Basin, Kaufman And Rockwall Counties, Texas, Bob H. Slaughter, John T. Thurmond

Fondren Science Series

The field work for this report was done during June, July, and August, 1964, by the Shuler Museum of Paleontology of Southern Methodist University under National Park Service Contract No. RO 330608. The Quaternary deposits of the East Fork of the Trinity River were mapped in the area of the basin of the proposed Forney Reservoir and the general patterns of bedrock geology outlined. All excavational and erosional exposures of terrace, floodplain, and bedrock deposits were prospected for molluscan and vertebrate fossils. Three terraces above the present floodplain are recognized.

Studies On The Granule-Moving System Of Melanocytes Of Fundulus Heteroclitus, Lorna Green Jan 1965

Studies On The Granule-Moving System Of Melanocytes Of Fundulus Heteroclitus, Lorna Green

Student Theses and Dissertations

Pigment granules in melanocytes of Fundulus heteroclitus exhibit both local movements and long distance intracellular migrations in response to hormones. These movements have been studied and a theory of the granule moving system has been proposed: The granules are in a structured continuum which expands and contracts to move them; the state of the continuum is the resultant of a dynamic equilibrium between expansile and contractile forces manifested in the local movements of granules. The fine structure of the cell has been explored by electron microscopy; the prominent features of the cell are microtubules. Several alternatives for the specific granule …

A Study Of The Transmission Of Sensory Information In The Cat Spinal Cord, Paul Richards Burgess Jan 1965

A Study Of The Transmission Of Sensory Information In The Cat Spinal Cord, Paul Richards Burgess

Student Theses and Dissertations

With the hope of elucidating neurophysiological mechanisms involved in cutaneous modality discrimination, a comparison was made between activity recorded from single fibers in the dorsal columns and lateral funiculus of the cat spinal cord. Information obtained from human subjects with spinal lesions had indicated that the main impairment following dorsal column transection was one of tactile discrimination and position sense, whereas the major impairments following lateral column lesions involved thermal sensations and pain. It was considered of interest to determine whether individual fibers in these regions were responsive to more than one kind of cutaneous stimulation (touch and cooling for …

Studies On The Production Of Γm And Γg Antibodies In The Mouse, Richard Charles Blinkoff Jan 1965

Studies On The Production Of Γm And Γg Antibodies In The Mouse, Richard Charles Blinkoff

Student Theses and Dissertations

The organ localization of intravenously administered C14-labeled intact S. adelaide was studied in mice. In the absence of circulating antibody, the spleen had a higher specific activity than other organs studied. The primary antibody response to this antigen was then studied using a specific flagellar immobilization assay. Spleen homogenate supernatants exhibited two distinct antibody peaks which were well separated in time. The serum titer curve was not detectably bimodal. Sera and spleen homogenate supernatants were characterized by electrophoresis, ultracentrifugation, and treatment with 2-mercaptoethanol. The primary antibody response was found to consist of the early, transient production of γM …

Sheep Can Be More Profitable In The Wheatbelt, G T. Halpin, P. Nelson Jan 1965

Sheep Can Be More Profitable In The Wheatbelt, G T. Halpin, P. Nelson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

TRADITIONALLY, wheatbelt farmers have looked upon sheep as being subsidiary, or at best, complementary to their main activity, wheat growing.

Because there has been a mistaken belief that clover would not grow, these farmers have depended upon native grasses and crop remains (stubble) for sheep feed, a practice which has put a limit to the number of sheep a property could support.
