The FGFR3-TACC3 (F3-T3) fusion gene was discovered as an oncogenic molecule in glioblastoma and bladder cancers, and has subsequently been found in many cancer types. Notably, F3-T3 was found to be highly expressed in both untreated and matched recurrence glioblastoma under the concurrent radiotherapy and temozolomide (TMZ) treatment, suggesting that targeting F3-T3 is a valid strategy for treatment. Here, we show that the F3-T3 protein is a client of heat shock protein 90 (HSP90), forming a ternary complex with the cell division cycle 37 (CDC37). Deprivation of HSP90 or CDC37 disrupts the formation of the ternary complex, which destabilizes glycosylated …

Sex And Starvation Influences Latrotoxin Expression In The Brown Widow Spider, Mattie Harris Apr 2022

Sex And Starvation Influences Latrotoxin Expression In The Brown Widow Spider, Mattie Harris

Honors College Theses

Widow spiders (genus Latrodectus) are well-known for their potent venom. Seven latrotoxin proteins constitute the main components of widow spider venom. The vertebrate specific (α-latrotoxin) and insect specific (α-latroinsectotoxin) latrotoxins have been well-characterized with respect to structure and function. Regulation of latrotoxin gene expression is not well understood but sex and feeding could be factors influencing production. In this study, I used quantitative qPCR to (1) characterize the expression patterns of both the insect and vertebrate specific latrotoxins in male and female brown widow spiders (Latrodectus geometricus) to characterize sex-biased expression and to (2) study expression patterns …

Adults’ Perceptions Of Children: Expectations Of Children With Disabilities And History Of Sexual Abuse, Asha L. Harp Apr 2022

Adults’ Perceptions Of Children: Expectations Of Children With Disabilities And History Of Sexual Abuse, Asha L. Harp

Honors College Theses

Adult perceptions greatly affect children, especially those most in need of help (e.g., children with sexual abuse histories (CSA); children with disabilities). It is important to examine how these perceptions can shape children’s lives. This study investigated adults’ perceptions to further understand views of children with CSA and disabilities. Children with histories of disabilities, compared to CSA or “normal” backgrounds, were perceived as having more externalizing behaviors. Children labeled with CSA were perceived to have more internalizing symptoms (compared to both “disabled” and “normal” and less competence (compared to “normal”). Further results are discussed.

Fingerprints Of Feeling: The Romantic Influence On Later Poetry, Brooke M. Neal Apr 2022

Fingerprints Of Feeling: The Romantic Influence On Later Poetry, Brooke M. Neal

Honors College Theses

Most readers and critics see the historical sequence of Western literature as a series of discrete literary periods and perceive these periods as reacting against one another like a pendulum swinging, each successive period countering its predecessor. This thesis interrogates that common understanding by demonstrating the persistence of Romantic themes in subsequent literary periods through the scope of British poetry. I trace three overarching tenets of the Romantic ideal through subsequent literary periods. literary periods: Romanticism, Victorianism, Modernism, and Postmodernism or the Contemporary era.

The Romantic ideal primarily emphasizes the importance of emotion over logic and reason. This ideal is …

Assessing Frequency Discrimination Ability In Ephrin-B2 Mutant Mice, Shayma Smaoui Apr 2022

Assessing Frequency Discrimination Ability In Ephrin-B2 Mutant Mice, Shayma Smaoui

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Tonotopy is when neurons at various levels of the auditory pathway are topographically arranged by their responses to different sound frequencies. Disruption of tonotopy leads to difficulty processing sound information. Ephrins/Eph receptors are molecules that are vital to axon guidance and topographic mapping during neural development. To investigate a role of ephrin-B2 in auditory circuit formation, I am assessing the ability of ephrin-B2 mutants to discriminate between frequencies. These assays will allow me to evaluate whether ephrin-B2 mutant mice have any deficits in discriminating between sound frequencies and whether ephrin-B2 plays an essential role in frequency map formation.

Accessing Gap Detection & Frequency Discrimination In Mice Utilizing The Acoustic Startle Reflex, Lynn Tran, Aniruth Senthilkumar Apr 2022

Accessing Gap Detection & Frequency Discrimination In Mice Utilizing The Acoustic Startle Reflex, Lynn Tran, Aniruth Senthilkumar

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Gap detection and frequency analysis of acoustic stimuli provide the basis for sound discrimination. Patients with impaired gap detection or frequency discrimination are often associated with several hearing disorders, including tinnitus, auditory processing disorders, language impairment, and dyslexia. Mice have emerged as the most common experimental animal model for studying human hearing impairments because of the ability to manipulate their genomes. As a result, developing an experimental setup to reliably assess gap detection and frequency discrimination abilities of mice offers the opportunity to screen animal models for understanding the pathogenic mechanisms of hearing disorders and learning disabilities.

The Role Of Caffeine, Nicotine And Theobromine In The Biodiversity And Function Of The Human Gut Microbiome, Thomas Gabriel Stanila Apr 2022

The Role Of Caffeine, Nicotine And Theobromine In The Biodiversity And Function Of The Human Gut Microbiome, Thomas Gabriel Stanila

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

The human gut microbiome plays a fundamental role in the regulation and maintenance of physiological processes and homeostatic relationships in the body, with research thoroughly proving its effects beyond gastrointestinal functioning such as in immune response, psychological operation, and nutritional metabolism. Caffeine, nicotine, and theobromine—the principal bioactive compounds in regularly consumed products like coffee, cigarettes, and dark chocolate, respectively—may yield significant and variable influences on human health beyond their normal pharmacodynamics through affecting gut microbiota. Using metagenomic modeling, predictions can be determined regarding intestinal community activity as well. I hypothesize that caffeine, nicotine, and theobromine will alter microbial community composition …
