Grain Banks In South Dakota, Harlan J. Dirks
Grain Banks In South Dakota, Harlan J. Dirks
Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)
Grain banking is a relatively new feed merchandising technique being used by country elevators in South Dakota. In simple terms, grain banking is any kind of an arrangement whereby farmers deposit feed grain at the elevator, and later withdraw it in one form or another, generally as mixed feed. Many country elevators have shown interest in grain banking as a means of utilizing surplus storage capacity and expanding services offered to farmers. Because of this interest, information is needed to guide elevator managers in developing more efficient and uniform methods of grain banking. This study obtained information about the operating …

A Study Of The Fluctuation Of Some Blood Chemical Constituents In Relation To The Reproductive Cycle Of The Mallard Duck, Edward H. Decker
A Study Of The Fluctuation Of Some Blood Chemical Constituents In Relation To The Reproductive Cycle Of The Mallard Duck, Edward H. Decker
Masters Theses
Introduction
The purpose of this study was to determine normal levels of several blood chemical constituents (the mineral sodium, potassium and calcium and the organic substances serum cholesterol and serum albumin) for the female mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos) and to examine their relationships as a possible index to reproductive development.
Much research has been done on the chemical composition of the avian egg and only those constituents which are of concern in this study will be discussed in detail. According to Romanoff (1949), studies of the chicken egg have shown that only a few mineral elements are present in relative …

Genetic And Maternal Influence On The First Three Lactations Of Holstein Cows, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. E. Bradford
Genetic And Maternal Influence On The First Three Lactations Of Holstein Cows, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. E. Bradford
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Milk records of up to the first three lactations of artificially sired Holstein daughters and their dams were used to estimate heritability from both daughter-dam regression and paternal half-sib correlation. The within-herd estimates from records expressed as deviations from herd-mate averages were .37, .30, and .24 from daughter-dam regression for the first three lactations ; and the corresponding estimates from half-sib correlation were .24, .21, and .23. These results suggest a large maternal effect in the first lactation, a small amount in the second, and little in the third lactation. Analysis of the records not as deviations gave the same …

The Texas Economy, Stanley A. Arbingast
The Texas Economy, Stanley A. Arbingast
Journal of the Graduate Research Center
For the past six decades, Texas has been in a process of explosive growth. Since 1900 population has more than tripled, from slightly over 3,000,000 to 10,300,000. The key factors in this growth have been the wide diversity of raw materials available for industry and man's recognition of their value as resources. But in 1965, because many of the nation's dynamic new industries are not oriented to raw materials, the people of Texas need to take a new and searching look at those resources which have been the major basis for economic development, for there is already evidence that as …
Selection, Organization And Nutritional Computation Of Recipes For A Cookbook, Patricia Hall Black
Selection, Organization And Nutritional Computation Of Recipes For A Cookbook, Patricia Hall Black
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study was involved in the selection of recipes for a cookbook. Over a thousand recipes were screened from a much larger number. These recipes were processed by grouping, combining and arranging into a uniform style and format. Many recipes were revised and tested. All recipes were of a lacto-ovo-vegetarian type, free from soda, baking powder and harmful condiments and spices.
Basic ingredient cards were prepared for the IBM computer from tables of food composition. Recipe ingredient cards for each item in the recipes were also prepared. These were programmed into the computer to give the total and per serving …

Nocturnal Flights Of Triatoma Protracta (Uhler) As Indicated By Collections At Black Light Traps : (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae), Robert D. Sjogren
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
An investigation into the environmental and ethological factors relating to summer flights of Triatoma protracta protracta (Uhler) was performed utilizing black light traps of original design. Field observations were conducted on 51 evenings during the period June 1 to October 31, 1964. The traps were operated on a surveillance basis for the remainder of a twelve month period.
A total of 398 adult Triatoma protracta were collected in traps around a residence located in the chaparral covered foothills 10 miles east of Redlands, California. In addition to observations on field behavior, laboratory dissections were performed on each bug to obtain …

Linearity Of Heritability Of Holstein First-Lactation Milk Production, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. L. Hart
Linearity Of Heritability Of Holstein First-Lactation Milk Production, L. Dale Van Vleck, C. L. Hart
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The regression of daughter on dam first-lactation milk deviations from herd-mate averages was found to be linear from an analysis of 47,400 Holstein pairs. The linear equation was y=-25.6 + .210 (x -27.6) and the quadratic equation was y=-25.6 + .208 (x -27.6) + .0000222 (x2-44131.4) with correlation coefficients, .18258 and .18268, respectively. These results suggest that selection response can be predicted adequately even with very large selection differentials.

Cesium And Sodium Metabolism By The New Mexico Whiptail Lizard, Margaret Flory
Cesium And Sodium Metabolism By The New Mexico Whiptail Lizard, Margaret Flory
Biology ETDs
The effect of temperature on electrolyte metabolism in the lizard Cnemidophorus perplexus was studied. The biological half-time and tissue distribution were the aspects of cesium and sodium metabolism noted. Increased temperature results in a higher metabolic rate. Measurements were made of the extent oxygen consumption increased with raised temperature in C. perplexus. Radioisotopes sodium-22 and cesium-137 were injected intraperitoneally into lizards kept at several environmental temperatures. Whole body radioactivity counts were taken twice daily on the live animals to determine the retention curves. At 50% retention and 80% retention lizards were sacrificed and tissue radioactivity counts taken to determine electrolyte …

A Comparative Population Study Of Small Vertebrates In The Uranium Areas Of The Upper Colorado River Basin Of Utah, Wilmer W. Tanner
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
This paper constitutes a terminal report to the United States Atomic Energy Commission for contract AT(11-1)819. It provides not only a faunistic and floristic study of areas having a high and low surface radiation, but also includes a consideration of their general ecology. Major emphasis is placed on the variation of the external characteristics of the small vertebrates of these areas with a statistical analysis of those characters examined in the lizards. The study was conducted in southeastern Utah (Tanner 1963, see map) from October 1959 through 1964, and was conducted as a test of the variation effects of natural …
