The Elusive Musk Ducks, Paul A. Johnsgard
The Elusive Musk Ducks, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
If one were to try to choose the most remarkable duck in the world, serious consideration would have to be given the Australian Musk Duck (Biziura lobata) of the family Anatidae. Among its unusual features are the great dimorphism of the sexes (males weigh eight pounds or more and are about three feet from bill to tail; females weigh two to three pounds and measure about two feet), the leathery pendent lobe that is located on the lower mandible, the strong odor of musk that is prominent in males during the breeding season, and the remarkably large eggs (averaging one-half …

Preliminary Report On The Paleontology Of The Livingston Reservoir Basin, Texas, Bob H. Slaughter
Preliminary Report On The Paleontology Of The Livingston Reservoir Basin, Texas, Bob H. Slaughter
Fondren Science Series
During the winter of 1964-65 an area in Southeast Texas was prospected for paleontological localities worthy of salvage efforts before they are inundated by waters to be impounded by the Livingston Dam, which is to be constructed just west of Goodrich. The work was sponsored by the National Park Service (Southwest Region). The Quaternary deposits of the Trinity River and its tributaries were mapped in detail and the bedrock geology was mapped in reconnaissance. Two Pleistocene terraces are recognized, both of which contain vertebrate fossils. In addition, the highest terrace contains freshwater and terrestrial mollusks, and the lower terrace has …
Where Is Moly?, A. L. Hatfield
Where Is Moly?, A. L. Hatfield
Agronomy Notes
Is moly in hiding or has it gone down the river? Recent tests in Graves County suggest that it is probably just in hiding.
Moly (molybdenum) is of importance to Kentucky farmers because of its unique relation to soil acidity and legume growth. Many other trace or minor elements necessary for plant growth are most available to crops under acid soil conditions. Molybdenum becomes more available as the soil acidity approaches neutrality.

Ultrasonic Tracking Of Migratory Fishes With An Internal Tag, Ross M. Horrall, H. F. Henderson, A. D. Hasler
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
First paragraph:
A small ultrasonic tag, 9 mm by 40 mm in size, has been developed by members of the fish orientation group at the University of Wisconsin. The tag emits a continuous signal at approximately 65 kc/sec. The signal is received via a directional hydrophone and a high quality communications receiver. Tracking ranges of up to 1 km have been obtained. The placement of the tag is internal: either into the stomach or into the body cavity of the fish. The tags and tracking equipment have been successfully employed in studies on the open water movements and orientation of …

Antibiotics And The Wasting Disease In Neonatally Thymectomized Rats, Douglas M. Grignon
Antibiotics And The Wasting Disease In Neonatally Thymectomized Rats, Douglas M. Grignon
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The administration of the antibiotic, Chloramphenicol, to pregnant rats just prior to, and for four days after delivery, diminishes the incidence of the so-called "Wasting Disease" in neonatally thymectomized rats.
A total of 50 rats were divided into the following groups:
- Thymectomy only---nonmedicated 17 rats
- Thymectomy only---medicated 12 rats
- Thymectomy-adrenalectomy---nonmedicated 5 rats
- Thymectomy-adrenalectomy---medicated 8 rats
- Controls---nonmedicated 4 rats
- Controls---medicated 4 rats
Chloramphenicol was administered in the drinking water to the mothers of groups 2, 4 and 6 for about 2 days prior to delivery and 4 days after. On the day of birth or within three days after birth, the …

The Coccidian Parasites (Protozoa, Sporozoa) Of Rodents, Norman D. Levine, Virginia Ivens
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
This monograph summarizes the known information on taxonomy, morphology, life cycle, hosts, location in the host, pathogenicity, geographic distribution, and cross-transmission studies of the 196 named species of coccidia of rodents. These include 176 species of Eimeria, 9 of Isospora, 3 of Wenyonella, 2 each of Cryptosporidium and Klossiella, and 1 each of Dorisiella, Caryospora, Tyzzeria, and Klossia. In addition, similar data are given for those forms for which insufficient information is available to justify assigning them names.
Eimeria, which is the most common genus, has been described from only 15% …

Paternal Half-Sib Correlations Between Pairs In The Same And Different Herds, L. Dale Van Vleck
Paternal Half-Sib Correlations Between Pairs In The Same And Different Herds, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Correlations were computed between first lactation milk records expressed as deviations from herd-mate averages of pairs of Holstein paternal half-sibs in the same and in different herds. These were compared to the comparable daughter-dam regressions. After correcting the daughter-dam regression for environmental correlation and change in variance from the dam to the daughter generation, both the daughter- dam and paternal half-sib estimates of heritability were about .34, which suggests that maternal genetic variance is. unimportant. This estimate is, however, higher than the .25 found from the paternal half-sib estimate from an analysis for variance components.
The comparison of the half-sib …

Genetic Covariances Among Relatives For Dairy Lactation Records, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. E. Bradford
Genetic Covariances Among Relatives For Dairy Lactation Records, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. E. Bradford
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Trios of first lactation records of a cow, her dam, and her granddam were analyzed in an attempt to distinguish between additive by additive genetic effects and maternal genetic effects as possible explanations of much higher heritability estimates from daughter-dam regression than from paternal half-sib correlations. The results based on first lactation records expressed as deviations from herdmate averages suggest that additive by additive effects, and probably environmental correlation contribute little or nothing to covariance between daughter and dam records. Genetic maternal effects may account for about 20% and direct additive genetic effects for 23% of within-herd variance for first …

A Phytosociological Study Of Coprophilous Ascomycete And Basidiomycete Communities From Santaquin Canyon, Utah, A. Clyde Blauer
Theses and Dissertations
Numerous reports have been published on the taxonomy and distribution of the coprophilous Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes. No known quantitative work has been done, however, on the succession and structure of the communities formed by these higher fungi. This research was undertaken to study those two phases of the ascomycete and basidiomycete communities which grow and fruit on cow dung collected from Santaquin Canyon, Utah.
The Role Of Thiamine Pyrophosphate In Regulating The Level Of Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid In The Central Nervous System, Bryant L. Adams
The Role Of Thiamine Pyrophosphate In Regulating The Level Of Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid In The Central Nervous System, Bryant L. Adams
Theses and Dissertations
The level of gamma-aminobutyric acid in the brains of white rats suffering from thiamine deficiency symptoms resulting from pyrithiamine or oxythiamine antagonism of thiamine or from thiamine deprivation was measured. The level of this amino acid was 17.5% lower in the brains of pyrithiamine-treated rats and 20.0% lower in the brains of thiamine-deprived rats than in the control rats. Daily injections of ten times the required amounts of vitamin B6 in rats treated with pyrithiamine or oxythiamine or by thiamine deprivation had no effect on the level of brain gamma-aminobutyric acid or on the psiological behavior of these rats. The …
The Inadequacy Of Intracranial Stimulation To The Posterior Hypothalamus To Serve As A Reinforcer For Maze Learning In The Rat, John A. Bull
The Inadequacy Of Intracranial Stimulation To The Posterior Hypothalamus To Serve As A Reinforcer For Maze Learning In The Rat, John A. Bull
All Master's Theses
Eighteen, 23 hour food deprived, self-stimulating rats were divided into two groups. One group received 20 ICS pulses as a reward for a correct response in a T-maze while the second group received a food reward. The subjects learned for food over 5 days of 10 massed trials per day, but failed to show learning for ICS either within sessions or over days. There was no difference in learning between rats with high bar press rates and those with low rates in either group.
Studies Of Rat Brain Thiamine Pyrophosphokinase, Lavell Rolfson Johnson
Studies Of Rat Brain Thiamine Pyrophosphokinase, Lavell Rolfson Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
The enzyme ATP:thiamine pyrophosphotransferase (thiamine pyrophosphokinaseJ was purified from acetone powders which were prepared from rat brains up to the chromatography on alumina C_γ step by a modified procedure that Mano (Y. Mano, J. Biochem., 42, 283 (1960)] developed for the purification of the rat liver thiamine pyrophosphokinase. The enzyme was purified 12 fold over that in the original extract of the acetone powder. A spectrophotometric assay for the brain thiamine pyrophosphokinase was developed utilizing brewer's yeast apotransketolase. The transketolase assay was able to detect less than 10^-11 moles of thiamine diphosphate, which was synthesized by the kinase, in the …
