Making Scholarly Publishing Work For You: Empowering Graduate Students To Understand The Scholarly Publishing Ecosystem Through A Graduate Academy Seminar, Haley Walton, Liz Milewicz, Will Shaw, Paolo Mangiafico, Kate Dickson
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
Understanding the landscape of scholarly publishing is an essential competency for graduate students, whether they publish during their studies or after they’ve entered their professional fields. But the scholarly publishing ecosystem can be complicated to navigate, and students cannot always rely on their advisors and colleagues to demystify the processes. To help graduate students achieve their goals when sharing their research, the ScholarWorks Center for Scholarly Publishing at the Duke University Libraries (https://scholarworks.duke.edu/) taught “Navigating Scholarly Publishing,” a five-day, interdisciplinary course introducing essential aspects of scholarly communication and empowering students to make informed, proactive decisions about sharing their …
Graduate Student’S Productivity Tools For Literature Review Research And Writing In The Age Of Ai, Carmen Orth-Alfie, Paul Thomas
Graduate Student’S Productivity Tools For Literature Review Research And Writing In The Age Of Ai, Carmen Orth-Alfie, Paul Thomas
Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students
In the fast-evolving world of academia, it is not hyperbole to say that generative AI and algorithm-based productivity tools like ChatGPT, Research Rabbit, and LitMap are quickly becoming transformative forces, reshaping the way graduate students (among many groups) approach the research and writing of thesis/dissertation literature reviews. But while the plethora of possibilities engendered by generative productivity tools is in many ways remarkable, the technology itself can often be overwhelming—not only for the graduate students, but also for us as librarians and information professionals supporting independent researchers from any discipline. Indeed, the ever-growing number of AI tools on the market …

Growing New Librarians Through Meaningful Internships, Nicole Lewis
Faculty Publications
Internships have the potential to be incredible learning experiences for students, but without thoughtful preparation, they may be nothing more than short-term jobs. Using a metadata internship as a case study, this presentation will discuss how using effective teaching and course design principles could create more thoughtful and meaningful internship experiences, specifically how crafting an internship objective and learning outcomes can help with creating content and learning activities that prepare interns for their hands-on projects. The result is an internship that combines theory and practice into a meaningful experience for the student and delivers needed work for the library.

Judicial Libraries As Predictors For Effective Administration Of Justice In Nigeria, Emmanuel Owushi
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The study examined judicial libraries as predictors for effective administration of justice in Nigeria. The population involved all legal practitioners and legal educators in Nigeria. 4000 respondents were sampled. Due to unavailability of the population at the time of the study, the adopted convenience sampling technique to sample 4000 respondents across legal professional bodies in Nigeria. A structured questionnaire titled ‘Use of Judicial Library and Administration of Justice Scale’ was used for data collection. The questionnaire was structured with the 4-point Likert scale response style, designed on Google form and distributed to the respondents via various social media platforms. A …

Ai Tools For Literature Reviews, Jing Lu, Zoeanna A. Mayhook
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
With the proliferation of AI tools, graduate students often ask themselves how these tools can be ethically used to bolster their research. ChatGPT has gained traction, but its utility is constrained by issues like outdated information, artificial hallucinations, and limited access to scholarly publications hidden behind a paywall. Fortunately, new AI tools have been developed that promote academic exploration and discovery, such as offering generative article summaries, citation chaining, and thematic literature mapping capabilities. This workshop will explore three AI tools—Perplexity, Research Rabbit, and Inciteful—designed to support the research and literature review process. This session will provide a demonstration showcasing …

Shoot For The Stars: Identity, Communication, And Negotiation, Amy Pham, Jill Grogg
Copley Library: Faculty Scholarship
Negotiation is a key component of e-resources, affecting the outcomes of current and emerging content models. Yet, we rarely consider how identity influences advocacy and communication. By exploring the impact of gender and racial identity, we can address major blocks to negotiation, identify effective strategies, and 'shoot for the stars'.

Streamlining Training & Professional Development For Student Workers, Hannah Engel
Foley Library Scholarship
Student employees in academic libraries are capable of extraordinary things, but their work is often limited to basic circulation tasks. This presentation addresses how libraries can sustainably provide training experiences to student employees, or other employees new to the workforce, preparing them for more complex tasks. Increasing new employee capabilities frees up staff time for other projects, while providing employees with valuable professional development opportunities. The presenter will speak from her experience of teaching college classes and supervising over 30 student employees at a university library. While this presentation will focus on the specific context of academic libraries, it will …

Nurse Engagement In Clinical Scholarship Linked To A Hospital-Based, Virtual Nursing Research Course, Trisha Saul, Frances Chu, Rose Timmerman, Teresa Rangel
Providence Nursing Research Conference 2023 – Present
Background:
Clinical scholarship is a multifaceted concept in nursing that embodies building and disseminating knowledge within the professional environment. This requires conducting practice-based research, discovering the best available evidence for clinical practice, and translating findings into nurse-led interventions. An environment of clinical scholarship involves creating opportunities for nurse engagement in research, evidence-based practice (EBP) projects, and quality improvement initiatives. This must be supported by education and training centered on the principles of clinical scholarship. A course was developed with the curriculum design focusing on its attributes and application in the clinical setting and cultural milieu.
Purpose:
To examine hospital-based nurses’ …

Impact Of Librarian Mediated Literature Review Services, Heather Martin, Carrie Grinstead, Danielle Linden
Providence Nursing Research Conference 2023 – Present
Background:
The Providence Library team has not had a systematic way to gather feedback from our users regarding our literature review service. While we receive many grateful responses to our literature searches, we need more detailed, consistent information about our impacts to inform leadership and improve our services. Previous studies have documented the importance of library services in hospitals, and the impact librarians make on quality patient care. As a small team serving a large health system, we need to carefully evaluate the effects of our work, share successes, and gather information that will help us improve. We conducted this …

Librarians and archivists are often early adopters and experimenters with new technologies. Our field is also interested in critically engaging with technology, and we are well-positioned to be leaders in the slow and careful consideration of new technologies. Therefore, as librarians and archivists have begun using artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance library services, we also aim to interrogate the ethical issues that arise while using AI to enhance collection description and discovery and streamline reference services and teaching. The IMLS-funded Responsible AI in Libraries and Archives project aims to create resources that will help practitioners make ethical decisions when implementing …

Interactive Elements To Boost Motivation In A Self-Paced Online Course, Emily D. Blake
Department of Learning, Technology and Leadership Education - Graduate Student Scholarship
This applied research project aims to deliver specific recommendations for JMU Libraries to consider implementing in its self-paced online onboarding program to increase completion rates, satisfaction, and the perceived relevance of its training for new employees. This qualitative research design uses an interpretive/inductive approach and informant sampling strategy—interviews with five instructional designers—to collect, analyze, and create practicable suggestions for interactive, non-graded activities that can be added to increase the adult learners’ motivation to engage with the content. The themes that emerged in these interviews pointed to three types of activities: reflection, discussion, and authentic tasks. These activities are well supported …
