The Anchor: 2024
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

This study makes a contribution to the rhetoric and composition field by documenting the research and writing processes of a diverse group of 15 multilingual writers in first-year composition (FYC) at a small private southeastern university. I collected and analyzed data from three assignments: 1) a video think-aloud capturing participants’ first online search for sources, 2) a two-page reflection on the use of sources in the first full draft of students’ research paper, and 3) their first full draft of the research paper. The study is the first to systematically examine how multilingual writers in FYC at a U.S. university …

Comparing The Health Information Practices Of Sapphic People By Age Group And Generation, Vanessa Lynn Kitzie
Comparing The Health Information Practices Of Sapphic People By Age Group And Generation, Vanessa Lynn Kitzie
Faculty Publications
This qualitative research examines how sapphic people (i.e., umbrella term inclusive of lesbian, bisexual, and pansexual trans femmes, mascs, nonbinary people, and ciswomen) in South Carolina navigate informational barriers within healthcare systems. An information practices lens that examines how sapphic people create, seek, use, and share information to achieve desired healthcare outcomes describes such navigation. The research focuses on how intersectional identities, with a particular emphasis on age and considerations of race/ethnicity, geography, and gender, mediate these practices and their outcomes. The research uses participant data from semi-structured interviews and focus groups with 34 sapphic people about their health information …

In 2023 the Virtual Learning Librarian at the University of North Florida’s (UNF) Thomas G. In this chapter, we explore positive, humane ways in which feminist principles of empathy and care can inform job interviews in academic libraries and shape the process into a more person-centered, or “whole person” ideal (Lopez, 2022). The whole person ideal authentically considers individuals’ experiences, preferences, and needs so that job opportunities are truly equal for all. In encouraging candidates to bring their whole, authentic selves to the hiring process, academic libraries can preemptively guard against deauthentication often experienced by BIPOC library workers (Kendrick, 2018). It is possible to do this while still hiring for strategic priorities and expertise.

Topic Development, Sandra Teft
Handouts
The purpose of this assignment is to not only full develop a topic for research, but to get comfortable in the process. Students start by working individually to develop subtopics and areas of interest from their original topic or research question. They then work in groups to help students continue to develop their ideas more completely. It is oftentimes easier to engage with a topic when it is not your own and there is less pressure. I was hoping to show students how easy it was to do this for others, and that it could be just as easy to …
