[Purpose/significance]This study aims to automatically generate claims using the GPT-4 model, in order to reduce the writing difficulty for inventor and improve the work efficiency and quality. [Method/process]The article constructs Prompts suitable for automatically generating patent claims and implements four prompting strategies: ZeroShot, Exact-Drafting, Stepwise-Claim, and Exact-Step Claim. By inputting patent specifications and technical disclosure documents into the GPT-4 model and using Prompts to guide its output, the automated generation of patent claims is achieved. The ROUGE and BERTScore evaluation metrics were used to assess the quality of the text, and the generated text was analyzed in comparison with the …

[Purpose/significance]Identifying and foreseeing emerging technologies, bring technological first-mover advantages to enterprises and governments, and grasp technological development trends in a timely manner. [Method/process]This study uses BERTopic's topic modeling method to obtain domain topic distribution, and merges paper and patent topics based on the cosine similarity of topic vectors to identify emerging topics. Academic librarians do not engage with all disciplinary departments equally. Despite equal or even greater efforts, some departments are less responsive to librarian outreach. One such department is mathematics. To understand mathematics departments’ relationships with their academic librarians, three mathematics librarians created a 20-question survey that was disseminated to mathematics faculty, instructors, and instructional staff in the United States and Canada. Of the 188 survey participants, more than a third reported that they never engage with their librarians, approximately half only do so occasionally, and a mere eight percent of participants collaborated with librarians to provide information literacy instruction (IL) …

Meeting Where Students Are: Stump The Librarian, Beth Hendrickson, Sara Decaro, Chris Labuda

Faculty Submissions

For two years, librarians Beth, Sara, and Chris, have been holding 'Stump the Librarian' events in Willard Hall. Gamifying the reference interview, Stump the Librarian events allow students to ask librarians silly, niche, or complex questions in the quest to 'stump' us. By meeting the students in their own space, it allows for more recognition for what librarians can offer students, lowers library anxiety, and allows better understanding of students' interests and research. This presentation offers insight into thinking outside of the box for engaging with students and gives faculty an opportunity to step outside of their comfort zone.

This mixed-method study investigates the representation of race and ethnicity within the J. Willard Marriott Digital Library at the University of Utah. The digital collections analyzed in this study come from the Marriott Library’s Special Collections, which represent only a fraction of the library’s physical material (less than 1 percent), albeit those most public facing. Using a team-based approach with librarians from various disciplines and areas of expertise, this project yielded dynamic analysis and conversation combined with heavy contemplation. This exploratory study investigates how integrating distance learning technologies within the U.S. Army impacts enlisted soldiers in terms of implementation, usability, and long-term career mobility. With internet-based education, active-duty enlisted personnel can pursue academic degrees from accredited military-affiliated institutions while simultaneously fulfilling operational duties, deployments, and daily training. The utilization of computerized analysis for evaluating students' contextualized constructed responses offers a potential avenue for educators to develop personalized and scalable interventions, thus supporting the current teaching and learning of science. Blockchain technology (BT) has the potential to enhance security and robustness of transactions through a distributed ledger bookkeeping process. This study employs technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework and threat-rigidity theory (TRT) to examine whether perceived disruption caused by COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the adoption of BT, and inclination to adopt BT in the US. The COVID-19 pandemic provided a unique backdrop, as it affected businesses across all industries, sizes, and geographies. Results show a non-significant effect of perceived pandemic disruption on the current stage of BT adoption and intention to adopt BT. As publishers and libraries attempt to align business models and collection strategies to an ever-increasing open access (OA) publishing landscape, both have found that the message of open access citation advantage (OACA) resonates with current and prospective authors. Despite its widespread promotion and acceptance, however, OACA is not universal and is subject to ongoing debate. Ask a librarian to describe a tiny library and a general answer will be a facility that is smaller than a small library. A more contem-porary description is a little library in a small wooden box that is attached to a stand and placed in a neighborhood to support reading and free book exchange. Both are good answers and added to these definitions is the centuries-old backstory when the tiny library was whatever an individual meant for it to be.

This spreadsheet tool is designed to provide archives and libraries a means of prioritizing the order in which data is migrated from physical media carriers and other sources in their collection in need of preservation. It is an adaptation of work from the Archives and Special Collections at the University of Glasgow, who developed a methodology for prioritizing archival processing of digital collections stored in physical storage media.

Undergraduate students sometimes encounter material objects as information resources in small-group classroom learning activities. Examples include art, artifacts, specimens, and anatomical models. This dissertation sought to identify common features of the students’ information practices in such situations, regardless of the activity’s discipline or content, and to explore how making material information central shapes students’ information practices. The conceptual framework combined theorizations of materiality and information practices. Methods involved video recording students doing a variety of simulated classroom activities with objects, video elicitation, qualitative content analysis, and praxiographic interpretation.
