Centring Lgbt2qia+ Subjects In Knowledge Organization Systems, Julia Bullard, Amber Dierking, Avi Grundner
Scholarly Papers and Articles
This paper details two interdependent knowledge organization projects for an LGBT2QIA+ library. The authors, in the context of volunteer library work for an independent library, redesigned the classification system and subject cataloguing guidelines to centre LGBT2QIA+ subjects. We discuss the priorities of creating and maintaining knowledge organization systems for a historically marginalized community and address the challenge that queer subjectivity poses to the goals of knowledge organization. The classification system features a focus on identity and physically reorganizes the library space in a way that accounts for the multiple and overlapping labels that constitute the currently articulated boundaries of this …

Anatomy Of An Exhibit: The Academic Library As Place Of Self-Instruction, Matthew Chase
San Marcos, Fall 2019
This exhibition project addresses the central question: How can we creatively transform academic library spaces to support and engage students in critical information literacy? The project used physical library space to install a series of exhibitions at the San Marcos Campus Library of the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences. Guided by the theoretical frameworks of Foucauldian perspective on knowledge and discourse, Falk and Dierking’s Contextual Model of Learning, and critical librarianship, the exhibit series engages students in a self-guided journey to discover and evaluate how knowledge is constructed, produced, and disseminated. Particular focus is directed to the Fall …

JETstream: Library Newsletter
It was the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus that once said: "the only thing that is constant is change.” Over the last several years, we have certainly witnessed many exciting changes here at Molloy and the library is no exception. At the JET Library we are constantly evolving and transforming to best provide the Molloy community with premium resources, high-level services and accommodating spaces. Although the library lost a stack room this past summer with recent campus renovations, we did gain some space when we repurposed one of our stack rooms into a much needed and highly requested by students, Quiet …

The Anchor: 2019
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract
Information technology affects the views and behavior of users and their environment. In the early decades, Traditional Islamic Boarding School (TIBSs) prohibited the use of communication and information technology. TIBSs experienced a shift to be increasingly open to the media and the internet. A strict prohibition on the use of media in Islamic boarding schools influences their insights about their health problems. To ensure the influence of media and internet on students’ life in TIBS, this research was conducted aiming at explaining the use level of media and internet by students in seeking health information, and the influence of …

Citation Rates For Ohio State Graduate Theses & Dissertations: Trends, Surprises, And Inaccuracies, Daniel S. Dotson
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The Ohio State University’s holdings of graduate theses and dissertations were examined to determine if highly-downloaded titles tended to be highly-cited. The study found that citation rates were highly variable and did not necessarily correspond to download rates. This included very highly downloaded titles with low citation rates, and lesser-downloaded titles with high citation rates. The study found that Google Scholar, which was used to identify citation rates, too often counts theses and dissertations as a version of a different work with the same title, even if it is another format and sometimes with additional authors. This article will share …
