Relational Liaising To Integrate Informed Learning Into The Disciplinary Classroom, Kim L. Ranger

Books and Contributions to Books

This conceptual chapter sets the stage for how librarians can support informed learning. It looks at how the intersections between informed learning, Bakhtin’s philosophy of communication, and relational leadership contribute to a model of relational liaising. The chapter provides examples of practical applications, interdisciplinary collaboration, and shared leadership which librarians and other teachers can adapt for specific arts, humanities, or social sciences disciplines. Many of the illustrations are set within communication-related curricula but also include the arts.

The Effects Of Discipline Membership And Experience In The Field On Scholars’ Book And Journal Format Preferences, Ana Dubnjakovic

Using data from Ithaka S + R US Faculty Survey 2015, the current study examined the influence of disciplinary differences and experience levels as well as their interactions on scholars’ attitudes toward print and electronic materials. While results of 3 × 5 factorial ANOVA procedure indicated both disciplinary membership and experience played a role in scholars’ attitudes, effect size indicated disciplinary membership played a more crucial role. Significant findings include rising popularity of electronic formats across examined groups.

Positioning itself optimally in a changing organisation is a key challenge for any academic library. The positioning of the library in the institution impacts its status, resources and opportunities. Technology has made effective positioning more challenging, competitive and fluid. This paper examines positioning challenges libraries face on campus and outlines some approaches to advancing their position in the institution.

Curating Care: Creativity, Women’S Work, And The Carers Uk Archive, Alice Hall, Hannah Tweed

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

This article analyses the previously unexplored archives of the British charity, Carers UK, and its predecessor organizations, from its formation in 1965 to the present day. We argue that the archive is a valuable resource for social, political, and economic histories of care in the home, women’s work, feminist campaigns, and charitable organizations in the UK and beyond. It gives voice to traditionally silenced populations of carers through a strikingly diverse range of letters, edited collections of fiction, minutes of meetings, video diaries, newsletters, and anthologies of creative writing. 2019 Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It started with a question: how would we collect a museum exhibit, a blog, or a borne-digital dissertation? Three years later, the University of Iowa Graduate College and University Libraries collaborated to organize a regional meeting on the future of the dissertation and applied lessons from three fine arts, non-monograph, thesis pilots to ingest our first borne-digital dissertation. Insights will be shared from these experiences as well as advancements in our thesis and dissertation policies and practices.

This study was designed to investigate the effect of just-in time on the academic achievement and interest of students offering cataloguing and classification course in Anambra State. In other to effectively carry out the study, it adopted the quasi experimental design particularly the pretest and posttest non-equivalent control group. This research work took a critical look at the information environment of Theatre and Media Arts Students of Federal University of Oye-Ekiti Ekit State. The study adopted was descriptive survey. The population was drawn from the undergraduate of Theatre and Media Arts with a population of 200. The study used the whole population as its sample size. Out of the 200 questionnaires administered, 190 copies were returned and found fit for analysis. The data were analysed using Statistical Percentage for Social Science. Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) is a regional university located in Montgomery, Alabama. The enrollment consists of 3,990 FTE undergraduate and graduate students (Auburn University at Montgomery, 2017). The library at AUM holds nearly 600,000 volumes, excluding government documents, along with more than 100 journal databases, which support student and faculty research. Over the past five years, the materials budget has decreased more than 30%, requiring collection reductions. Initial analysis determined that in addition to other items, one of the recommended products for elimination was the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Humanities E-Book project.

This study examines effect of theft and mutilation on the use of library collection in an academic library in Lagos State, Nigeria. The total population for this study comprised of 250 undergraduate registered user of university of Lagos library in the 2017/2018 academic session who are constant users of the library. Faculty Format Preferences In The Performing Arts: A Multi-Institutional Study, Joe C. Clark, Jonathan Sauceda, Sheridan Stormes

Scholarship and Professional Work

Resources for teaching in higher education have undergone a tremendous evolution during the past several decades. The Internet and commercial services, such as YouTube and Google, have revolutionized the manner by which students and faculty access information to both conduct research and meet course requirements. This mixed methods study implemented an online survey and interviews to determine how performing arts faculty at three institutions integrate library resources and services into their teaching. Conclusions indicate that, while personal collections and Internet resources provide a majority of teaching content, the academic library still offers important access to materials for instruction.

Altruism Or Self-Interest? Exploring The Motivations Of Open Access Authors, Robert Heaton, Dylan Burns, Becky Thoms

More than 250 authors at Utah State University published an Open Access (OA) article in 2016. Analysis of survey results and publication data from Scopus suggests that the following factors led authors to choose OA venues: ability to pay publishing charges, disciplinary colleagues’ positive attitudes toward OA, and personal feelings such as altruism and desire to reach a wide audience. Tenure status was not an apparent factor. This article adds to the body of literature on author motivations and can inform library outreach and marketing efforts, the creation of new publishing models, and the conversation about the larger scholarly publishing …

The Language Archive at the Max Planck Institute Nijmegen (https://archive.mpi.nl) is an extensive online repository of language resources. The archive was developed using in-house solutions, including metadata creation tools, depositing tools and an archive-browser. Development had been going on for more than 15 years, but was difficult and expensive to maintain. Additionally, some of these tools had were fairly complex to use, not meeting current user needs. Therefore, the choice was made to migrate to a more sustainable open-source solution, easier to use, maintain and to develop upon.

The print map, once seen as a unique and preservation worthy collection treated uniquely as a collection housed within a separate library or library space, has seen a precipitous decline in usage since Google Maps and other online tools emerged on the scene starting in 2005. From December 2017 through January 2018 the greater Santa Barbara community was impacted by the dual disasters of the Thomas Fire and the Montecito debris flows. Through these months, and the following year, the Santa Barbara Public Library (SBPL) engaged in a variety of disaster response activities to support the community, from participating as Information Officers in the Joint Information Center and handing out N95 masks to providing additional storytimes and recovery writing workshops. Following her experience of the Virginia Tech campus shooting in 2007, filmmaker and librarian Ashley Maynor set out to explore the phenomenon of temporary memorials and so-called “grief archives” using both documentary filmmaking and other qualitative research methods. She subsequently published her findings about Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, and other public tragedies as Response to the Unthinkable: Collecting & Archiving Condolence & Temporary Memorial Materials Following Public Tragedies, to help fill a large gap in LIS literature about the best practices for libraries in responding to crises in their communities.

The Anchor: 2019

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

This poster session visualizes an innovative Alternative Summer Break Academic Library Internship program for current or recently graduated library and information science (LIS) students. Currently in its fourth year, the program provides opportunities for graduate students to experience professional engagement in a real academic library. Logistics, planning, recruitment, management, and lessons learned will be shared, which will provide valuable insights for libraries wishing to build similar programs. Prospective interns will learn about the structure of the program, expectations and outcomes, and how to apply.

Library Scholarship

The purpose of the article is to demonstrate how Binghamton University Libraries has changed the workflows and channels of communication between Special Collections and the Technical Services Department. Over the last two years these departments have worked to foster cooperative decision making in order to increase understanding of project priorities and allow for more efficient cataloging, leading to greater accessibility of Special Collections items. The article also looks at how this relationship can be expanded upon in the future, so that cataloging/metadata librarians and Special Collections staff and librarians can work together to create better access to materials.
