Manga Records Enhancement Project At The University Of Washington Libraries, Junghae Lee, Keiko Hill

This report provides an overview of the "Manga Records Enhancement Project" implemented at the University of Washington Libraries. Following the Library of Congress (LC)'s approval on headings for manga in both the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and the Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms for Library and Archival Materials (LCGFT), “Manga (Comic books)” was established in LCSH and “Manga” in LCGFT. The manga records enhancement project was designed to enhance OCLC WorldCat records held by the University of Washington Libraries. The method was through a combined approach of batch processing utilizing MARCEdit and OCLC API, and individual records enhancements. …

Objective: To create a resource guide on closed and relocated historical hospitals in the southern region of Louisiana, documenting rural and urban hospitals with their address, years open, interesting facts, and photographs if available.

Methods: A reference question about a historical hospital in the area prompted the idea, as when doing research for information about the hospital, it was more challenging than initially thought it would be to find photos and other information. Information was collected from a wide range of sources such as directories, newspaper and magazine articles, government reports, etc. Using this information, we have built a public …

Bringing Servicewomen Into Focus: Exploring Methods For Indexing Second World War Archival Photographs At Library And Archives Canada, Rebecca Murray

Canadian Military History

The Second World War saw women officially serving in the Canadian military in capacities other than nursing, breaking into roles historically held by men. The service of over fifty thousand Canadian women is documented in photographs held at Library and Archives Canada; photographs that allow historians to widen the lens on the traditional narrative, but only if they can find them. This article presents two methods for indexing archival photographs and highlights the particular challenges of identifying servicewomen in the archival record and bringing our aunties and grandmas into focus.

Background

Health science librarians frequently engage in discussions about the proper assignment of systematic reviews for graduate students. Such reviews are often assigned as a way to build the research skills students will need in a clinical environment and provide them with a publishable deliverable. In the assignment of these reviews, it has become apparent that health science faculty are often not familiar with the standardized methodologies required. Incorrect methodologies can contribute to research waste and produce evidence that cannot be applied for its intended purpose.

The study investigated the effect of Internal trainings and job satisfaction of library staff in some selected university libraries in South-South, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design using questionnaire as instrument for data collection. The population of the study consists of 89 library staff which was randomly picked. A total of 89 questionnaires were distributed only 78 were retrieved. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics mean and percentage mean score of 2.5 and above and percentage score of 50% were considered. Models used in geospatial data science are often built and optimized for a specific local context, such as a particular location at a point in time. However, upon publication, these models may be generalized beyond this context, reused in research simulating or predicting other times and places. Without sufficient information or documentation, bias embedded in these models can in turn result in bias in the reuser’s research outputs. Drawing on a long-term qualitative case study of aging dams researchers and developers of models used by these researchers, we find significant documentation gaps. The virtuosic complexity of Afro-Cuban orisha music has led scholars and artists to enshrine it as a “classical” tradition, and it has become one of most iconic and closely-studied sacred music traditions of the historical Afro-Atlantic. This essay traces the legacies of several analog-era multimedia technologies in orisha music traditions: reel-to-reel and cassette tapes; limited edition and out-of-print books and phonograph discs; ephemeral texts such as album liner notes; and photographic negatives, prints, and slides. The tapes and photos — along with a vast body of informal, unpublished, and out-of-print documents of Afro-Cuban orisha liturgy — are seldom archived by …

This paper builds on language, media, information, digital, and cultural literacy to offer a definition of social media literacy that addresses the abilities needed to be an engaged, informed, ethical, and responsible social media user. The paper draws attention to skills of information evaluation, knowledge of production, cultural understanding, and knowledge of content moderation practices as necessary for social media literacy. In September of 2023, a middle school teacher wrote an open letter to the Lexington County, Virginia school board expressing outrage over the “graphic sexual content” included in the county middle school’s library. Swiftly following the letter, the school board removed two books from the county’s Lylburn Middle School library without due process and avowed to reconsider the guidelines for including books in the library. One of the two books in question was It’s Perfectly Normal, a non-fiction illustrated book intended to educate readers ten and up on sex, intercourse, and puberty. When John B. West developed his legal classification system in the 1880s, he likely didn’t anticipate that his system of indexing the law would persist into the twenty-first century. But persist it has, and flourished, most prominently in the form of Westlaw’s headnote and key number system. West’s index built on several precursors, but it was his version, West’s American Digest, that established the foundations of the classification system that most modern legal researchers use today, in one form or another.

This qualitative research examines how sapphic people (i.e., umbrella term inclusive of lesbian, bisexual, and pansexual trans femmes, mascs, nonbinary people, and ciswomen) in South Carolina navigate informational barriers within healthcare systems. An information practices lens that examines how sapphic people create, seek, use, and share information to achieve desired healthcare outcomes describes such navigation. The research focuses on how intersectional identities, with a particular emphasis on age and considerations of race/ethnicity, geography, and gender, mediate these practices and their outcomes. The research uses participant data from semi-structured interviews and focus groups with 34 sapphic people about their health information …

In this chapter, we explore positive, humane ways in which feminist principles of empathy and care can inform job interviews in academic libraries and shape the process into a more person-centered, or “whole person” ideal (Lopez, 2022). The whole person ideal authentically considers individuals’ experiences, preferences, and needs so that job opportunities are truly equal for all. In encouraging candidates to bring their whole, authentic selves to the hiring process, academic libraries can preemptively guard against deauthentication often experienced by BIPOC library workers (Kendrick, 2018). It is possible to do this while still hiring for strategic priorities and expertise.

The goal of Brenda Dervin’s ground-breaking research was not just to develop the sense-making theory, framework, and tools, but also to “invent communication alternatives and assess their utility.” One of the ‘practice communication inventions’ of Brenda Dervin was the ‘Good news newsletter’ where she developed infosheets for doctors, schools, and medical clinics (Neill, 1992, p. 6). Scholar and scientist Dr. Lucina Uddin (the “Scholar Plaintiff”) brings this antitrust class action to challenge collusion among the world’s six largest for-profit publishers of peer-reviewed scholarly journals: (1) Elsevier B.V.; (2) Wolters Kluwer N.V.; (3) John Wiley & Sons, Inc.; (4) Sage Publications, Inc.; (5) Taylor and Francis Group, Ltd.; and (6) Springer Nature AG & Co. KGaA (collectively, the “Publisher Defendants”). In violation of Section 1 of the Sherman Act, the Publisher Defendants conspired to unlawfully appropriate billions of dollars that would have otherwise funded scientific research (the “Scheme”).
