Toward Ethical And Inclusive Descriptive Practices, Shira Peltzman, Kelly Besser
Journal of Critical Digital Librarianship
This case study describes the context which galvanized our Collection Management unit at UCLA Library Special Collections to collectively craft a descriptive practices statement within a study group focused on an anti-oppressive approach to discovery and access. This paper discusses the planning and design of the study group, our direct engagement at meetings, collaborative iteration, and liberatory pedagogical strategies that enabled the statement’s publication, and its impact within our department, library, and beyond. This work speaks to radical descriptive change and provides a potential path for the development of ethical and inclusive descriptive practices at other institutions.

The article presents a conversation between artist and professor Elodie Silberstein and feminist academic librarian Susan Thomas about the evolution of feminist zine culture ingrained in histories of resistance and self-publishing as well as the current popularity of zines. The authors discuss their collaborative zine pedagogy in an introductory gender studies course at Pace University during the COVID-19 pandemic.

United Colors of Benetton, or UCB, has been using its advertisements to deliver positive messages and values that the clothing company represents. This article analyzes one of the photographs in Benetton’s campaign for their Spring Summer Collection of 2018. The campaign, which consists of some photographs by Oliviero Toscani, raises the theme of equality of gender and ethnicity. It shows various photographs of both female and male models from different ethnicities. Heritage experts working in Qatar contend that international museum standards do not allow them to engage with local understandings of history and heritage, thereby acknowledging the disconnect between museums and Qatari collective memory. This article posits that due to the relative absence of relatable representations in international-facing museums, Qataris, building upon a local tradition of private folk museums, are collecting and sharing their heritage materials via social media in forms known in the field of archival studies as “community archiving.” In reviewing examples of Qatari online community archives, it notes correspondences to the characteristics of community archives that have been …

In recent years, the increased availability of public data dashboards provided opportunities to democratize data access by summarizing large amounts of data into accessible snapshots to facilitate educational efforts and encourage evidence-based decision-making. However, many current practices have not reached their full potential because the dashboard design has not accounted for users’ needs and preferences. Infographics are an effective means to communicate with audiences, draw attention, and make concepts digestible in a quick and straightforward way. This study explores students’ opinions on infographics used in library instruction, and provides quantitative data to help librarians determine whether these tools will help students engage with text and retain key concepts. Based on research conducted with undergraduate music students at two universities, DePauw University and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, this paper examines how students understand and interact with content embedded in infographics, and measures retention of information presented in either plain-text or infographic form.

Visual literacy equips learners with the dispositions to critically create, analyse, use, and share visual information. As one component of a discerning, ethical citizenry, visual literacy has become more essential in a rapidly evolving information ecosystem. Against this backdrop, the current Association of College and Research Libraries Visual Literacy Task Force conducted qualitative research from 2019 to 2021, interviewing visual literacy and information literacy experts to identify emergent trends, challenges, and opportunities shaping visual literacy in the twenty-first century. This book chapter details instructional partnerships between experts at the Freedman Center for Digital Scholarship and faculty and students at Case Western Reserve University. Applications of digital scholarship methods in the classroom are discussed through case studies, which include assignments and activities incorporating GIS, Scalar, and photogrammetry. A literature review and mapping of digital scholarship concepts and methods to the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education are included.

This talk focused on the librarian-led activities for the course Community Engagement Seminar, highlighting collaboration, teaching and learning, outcomes, and other uses of Scalar. This course focused on ways that K-12 school personnel create successful learning environments. Incorporating mapping, data visualization, and digital publishing, we taught students how to use several online tools and create a Scalar book that presented their research. Through a mixture of Zoom instructional sessions and personalized consultations, we helped students use Scalar to collaborate with their group members and build skills to successfully communicate goals, strategies, and outcomes to a broader community.

This presentation focuses on how a set of digital humanities workshops offered to university faculty helped them incorporate new resources and methods into their teaching. The first workshop was an overview of digital tools that focused on getting started without feeling overwhelmed, ways to incorporate art and archival resources into projects, and approaches to facilitating meaningful experiences in the classroom. This poster showcases the result of a collaboration between the Library, Visual Design Communication and Occupational Therapy to address specific health literacy and access issues in Philadelphia. Library Scholarship
California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) is one of the 23 campuses within the California State system. It is a four-year, public university, emphasizing comprehensive undergraduate education with a total enrollment of ~20,000 undergraduate and graduate students (96% undergraduate). Teaching and scholarship are both required by faculty but with limited research support services. A survey of faculty research data services needs was conducted in 2012. Survey invitations were emailed to a stratified random sample of 449 faculty (tenure-track or tenured assistant, associate and full professors only) and 226 responded for an overall response rate of 50%.
