Practicing Ignatian Pedagogy: A Digital Collection Of Resources, Zheng (Jessica) Lu, Vicki Rosen

Gleeson Library Faculty and Staff Research and Scholarship

In the Spring 2015 issue of Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal, Kimberly Connor described building an Ignatian Pedagogy Faculty Learning Community at the University of San Francisco. One outcome of the FLC was to gather and make easily available a collection of resources on Jesuit education and the IPP (Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm). In this issue, two USF Gleeson Library/Geschke Center librarians, Zheng (Jessica) Lu, Digital Collections Librarian, and Vicki Rosen, Distance Learning Services Librarian, describe creating Practicing Ignatian Pedagogy: A Digital Collection of Resources, an openly accessible database available through the USF Library website, using the FLC resources …

Re-Thinking Survey Promotion: It's Not Just About The Numbers, Kristen S. Shuyler, Jonathan Reed, David Vess Oct 2015

Re-Thinking Survey Promotion: It's Not Just About The Numbers, Kristen S. Shuyler, Jonathan Reed, David Vess

Libraries

Promoting a survey - it's all about getting people to click on it, right? Not always. This session will describe the promotion campaign we designed for the James Madison University Libraries' 2015 LibQUAL+ survey. Ultimately, this campaign was not just about the survey - it was about how we want our campus to feel about the Libraries.

Libraries commonly engage their user communities by gathering users' feedback. Analyzing and acting on user feedback can lead to the responsive design and (re)development of library services, spaces, and programs. Our campaign placed that value of "responsiveness" front and center, with two taglines: …

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

In the context of rapid change in social work practice related to policy, research findings, and theoretical developments, faculty are challenged to prepare students to engage in lifelong learning, a concept that has not been well-articulated in social work education. This article reports on an exploratory study of students,' social workers,' and field instructors' perspectives and experiences of lifelong learning. Based on focus group discussions, findings reveal the multi-faceted nature of lifelong learning, the personal characteristics and motivations of lifelong learners, and the roles of social work faculty and workplace environments in supporting learning. Wisconsin School For Girls Inmate Record Books: A Case Study Of Redacted Digitization, Eric Willey, Laura Farley Oct 2015

Wisconsin School For Girls Inmate Record Books: A Case Study Of Redacted Digitization, Eric Willey, Laura Farley

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

The Wisconsin School for Girls collection housed in the Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS) archives contains a variety of documents from the institution’s period of operation. Inmates who were admitted to the institution were predominately juvenile females at the time of the records’ creation; because of this, the contents of the records are protected by Wisconsin state statutes, which mandate restricted access for patrons as well as limitations on the use of the information contained within the records. This article examines how the restrictions on the collection continue to protect the privacy of the inmates and their descendants, what procedures WHS …

While libraries face challenges in building usage of a new medium like streaming video, strategic, active marketing by libraries, with support from vendors, can overcome these challenges. Time‐tested marketing strategies, as well as leveraging new promotional tools can help the library attain the usage that justifies the investment in new media. If you license, with a little help, they will come.

The Big Shift: How Vcu Libraries Moved 1.5 Million Volumes To Prepare For The Construction Of A New Library, Ibironke Lawal, Patricia Selinger, Barbara Anderson

Charleston Library Conference

Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries (VCUL) has been faced with serious space problems for more than a decade. Initiatives to correct this include the digital shift. VCUL’s new policy stipulates that journal subscriptions should be electronic only, wherever available. Where publishers offer both print and online for the same price, the library donates the print instead of keeping them on the shelves. Replacing print series with the electronic version as they become available is another ongoing practice. Added to these is moving infrequently used or superseded materials to storage as a continuous activity. All these were short‐lived measures until now. In …

Moving Librarian Collecting From Good To Great: Results From The First Year Of A Librarian Liaison Collaborative Monographic Purchasing Project, Genya O'Gara, Carolyn Schubert, Lara Sapp, Michael Mungin

Charleston Library Conference

As Collins (2001) found in his evaluation of how companies evolve from “good” to “great,” one of the key components of such a transition is to focus less on continuing tasks, and more on NOT continuing tasks. Today’s librarians are juggling instruction, reference, collection development, outreach, and the need to develop new expertise in emerging areas, such as data curation, multimedia resources, institutional repositories, and more. Librarians cannot responsibly continue all traditional tasks while facing shifting budget priorities and new responsibilities. As noted in ARL’s Issue Brief (2012), “never before have we been required to grasp so many dimensions of …

A Librarian Run’S For Political Office (Or Cincinnatus Looks Outside The Ivory Tower), Peter L. Kraus Aug 2015

A Librarian Run’S For Political Office (Or Cincinnatus Looks Outside The Ivory Tower), Peter L. Kraus

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Librarians have long been activists for social and political causes outside of their profession; however, few take the crucial step and actually run for political office at the local, state, or national level. In March 2014, after being involved in local and state politics for over ten years and volunteering for political campaigns at the local, state, and national level, and with some encouragement from individuals I knew in political and academic circles, I threw myself into the political realm by registering to run as a (moderate) Republican for a House seat in the Utah Legislature. Little did I know …

Student Curators And Exhibit "Labs" In Libraries, Beatriz B. Hardy, Jennie A. Davy Aug 2015

Student Curators And Exhibit "Labs" In Libraries, Beatriz B. Hardy, Jennie A. Davy

Re-think it: Libraries for a New Age

Our presentation focuses on creating and using exhibit spaces in academic libraries as laboratories for students. It is based on our experiences developing a student-curated exhibit program at the College of William and Mary (W&M) using existing spaces and designing exhibit “lab” space for the new library at Salisbury University. The presenters formerly worked together at W&M’s Special Collections Research Center (SCRC), Bea Hardy as director and Jennie Davy as exhibits curator. Hardy is now dean of libraries at Salisbury University.

W&M’s emphasis on undergraduate research and a desire to create authentic assessments for humanities students inspired the SCRC staff …

Do Stress Levels Differ Between First Semester Nursing Student Early In The Semester Vs. The End Of The Semester?, Alissy Heisey Aug 2015

Do Stress Levels Differ Between First Semester Nursing Student Early In The Semester Vs. The End Of The Semester?, Alissy Heisey

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This study intends to determine how stress levels change over time in nursing students in the Baccalaureate program at East Tennessee State University. The instrument utilized for this survey was the Perceived Stress Scale by Mind Garden, Inc. This survey was passed at the beginning of the semester and at the end of the semester. There was no-significant difference found between the two time spots, leading us to conclude that the level of stress perceived by nursing students is a steady factor during their school semester.

Archaeologists And The Archival Record, Evan Peacock Jul 2015

Archaeologists And The Archival Record, Evan Peacock

The Primary Source

Archaeologists study the material record, bits of things that have been either intentionally or unintentionally modified by human beings to become artifacts. In a word, stuff. Practitioners are expected to become familiar with a vast range of stuff and the characteristics thereof: from the flowing ripple marks left on a fragment of stone after it has been hammered off of a larger piece to produce a flake, to the peculiar, stretched cross-section that indicates a square nail has been machine-cut rather than hand-forged. One particularly important subset of stuff is the archival record which, besides consisting itself of artifacts of …
