A Proposed Innovative Learning Spaces For A State University Library In The Philippines, Delna Liwaden-Galut, David A. Cabonero
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The library plays a significant role in providing a welcoming, inviting, and appealing library environment to attract learners to use its resources and services. Consequently, the learning preferences of learners prompted the shift from information commons to learning commons in higher education. With an emphasis on the social dimensions of learning, the learning space represents a transformative change that extends beyond the reach of the traditional library. The library can maximize the learners' potential by making it truly an extension of the classroom. This research is guided by the following research questions: 1. What are the teachers’ and librarians’ perceived …
Possible Futures For Colonial Collecting Institutions: A Study Of Historical Societies In The United States, Jen Hoyer
Publications and Research
This article explores how collecting institutions with deeply colonial roots can move into a decolonial future existence, through an in-depth study of historical societies in the United States. Examining their historic roots in colonialism of the United States and the persistence of these colonial identities in spite of a variety of evolutionary trends over the 20th century, this article asks: what decolonial possibilities exist for their future? If institutional shifts have not undone the colonial identities of some collecting institutions, what can? Turning to Sarah Ahmed’s theory on queer use and Saidiya Hartman’s method of critical fabulation, I suggest practical …

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship
The presenters will share the results of a 2021 survey of the academic library members of the Association of Research Libraries to determine how information technology services are organized within the libraries and whether there is a trend toward centralizing IT activities at the institution level. Survey findings from the 72 responding libraries address 14 information technology services and activities and identify who is responsible for their technology services, their level of satisfaction with the services, whether the responsibility for them has changed recently, and if so, why. Respondents also provided information about IT assessment and top three challenges. The …

Librarian Residency Programs: A Vital Solution For Increasing Representation In Academic Libraries, Aisha Johnson Phd, Alexandra Brinson, Kayleah Brown, Karen Manning, Estella Richardson
Georgia Library Quarterly
According to ALA’s 2017 demographic study, the profession is nearly completely White while society consists of a variety of cultures and communities. The lack of representation is a matter of exposure, strategic and diverse recruitment, and retention of professionals of color as well as those belonging to marginalized communities. Recruitment and retention are key, but we must recognize that retention is successful when focused on a person's development through mentoring, coaching, and other targeted measures like residency programs. This paper discusses the benefits of residency and fellowship programs as a retention tool when implemented with intention and authenticity.

Thinking Outside The Dyad: Incorporating Cohort-Based Experiences Into Mentorship, Angela Yon, Grace Allbaugh, Susan Franzen
Thinking Outside The Dyad: Incorporating Cohort-Based Experiences Into Mentorship, Angela Yon, Grace Allbaugh, Susan Franzen
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
A benefit of the traditional one-to-one, hierarchical mentoring relationship is the individualized attention and guidance the mentor provides the mentee. This singular mentoring relationship can be effective but is not always sufficient in addressing institutional acculturation and meeting personal needs of the new employee. This paper discusses how an emergent mentoring program at Milner Library blended the dyadic mentoring relationship with cohort-based programming to create a space for participants to learn from colleagues across departments, share experiences, and consider psychosocial issues. These grassroots programming efforts have cultivated holistic engagement and renewed community.

Defining Archival Debt: Building New Futures For Archives, Jillian Cuellar, Audra Eagle Yun, Jennifer Meehan, Jessica Tai
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
As archivists surface and reckon with harmful theory and practice, how can we awaken to transcend past legacies? This article introduces and reflects on the concept of “archival debt,” defined as resources owed to address problematic legacy issues in an archival repository resulting from past practices, policies, and strategies that prioritized the protection and validation of institutions over democratic access and responsible stewardship. As a concept, archival debt amalgamates the myriad issues we now grapple with as a profession, including harmful or inadequate description, performative or competitive collecting, languishing backlogs, failure to recognize staff potential, shortsighted fund management, neglected constituencies, …

Re-Envisioning Liaison Roles: A Librarian-Led Process For Inclusive Organizational Change, Brianne Markowski, Jennifer Mayer, Jennifer Leffler, Rachel Dineen, Wendy Highby, Jane Monson, Stephanie Wiegand
University Libraries Publications
The traditional subject specialist model allowed liaison librarians at our mid-sized, public, doctoral/professional university to develop strong relationships with disciplinary faculty. But changing priorities at the university level and reductions in library budget and staffing created new challenges, resulting in liaisons shouldering too many responsibilities and facing unsustainable workloads. Learning to “do less with less” required a significant evolution in how we approached our core work as academic librarians. How could our library re-envision a previously successful liaison model when the librarians agreed that a change was needed, but didn’t agree what it should look like?
Through a design thinking-inspired …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
ABSTRACT
Knowledge management is described as a systematic act of identifying, capturing, and disseminating information and knowledge so that individuals can utilize it to develop, complete, and improve knowledge. As such, knowledge management is viewed as both a concept and a practice and concept. Most firms are finding that knowledge management is a crucial instrument for preserving their reputation and standing in the global marketplace. This paper therefore aims to explore knowledge management among health professionals. Using the PRISMA approach, a systematic search was conducted on PUBMED and Google Scholar databases. The eligibility criteria include both qualitative and quantitative studies …

Presentations
Leaders and managers have an outsized impact on workers’ wellbeing. In facing the reality of constant and unpredictable change, leaders and managers need to consider the humanity of their employees as part of their commitment to equity. We suggest that library leaders and managers need to consider human-centered approaches as part of their leadership toolkit. Human-centered leaders have a strong focus on people and the organizational culture. They layer compassion and empathy in taking actions to fulfill the organization's mission.
We acknowledge that there are situations when taking a human-centered approach to the needs of library employees can feel in …

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship
This study presents the results of an online survey that benchmarked the organization of information technology (IT) functions in academic library members of the Association of Research Libraries. The survey investigated whether responsibility for 14 key areas resided in the libraries or in an institution-level information technology department, whether responsibilities have shifted over the past 20 years, satisfaction with services provided, assessment methods used to evaluate information technology services, and top challenges facing library IT. This paper considers the survey results addressing where the responsibility lies, satisfaction with the support, and whether and when the responsibility changed.

Knowledge Management Implementation In U.S. Army Headquarters: A Case Study, David Marvin Van Laar
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This case study examined the U.S. Army’s implementation of knowledge management (KM) as an integrating process within its command and control system. The research problem explored was the U.S. Army’s attempts to measure knowledge transfer using the KM Maturity Model (KM3) and KM Assessment Tool (KMAT). The purpose was to determine levels of KM maturity and knowledge barriers that affected decision-making. The conceptual approach used Nonaka and Takeuchi’s process theory for the knowledge-based firm, combined with Argote and Hora’s framework of knowledge transfer as it applied to Moore’s concept of public value. The central research questions explored the levels of …

We Didn’T Know: How A Mid-Career Research Project Taught Us About Disability, Advocacy, And Ourselves, Lee Ann Fullington, Jill Cirasella
Publications and Research
We—Lee Ann and Jill—are mid-career faculty librarians at different campuses of the City University of New York (CUNY), and we are both hard of hearing. Lee Ann has bilateral hearing loss and uses two hearing aids; Jill has single-sided hearing loss and uses only one. However, even with hearing aids, which do not restore normal hearing, our hearing loss complicates our lives at work and in the broader world. This chapter describes how we found community in each other, how our conversations about hearing loss led to a mid-career research collaboration, and how that collaboration launched us into a larger …
Allies, Cobelligerents, And The Political Realities Of Pursuing Social Justice Librarianship In Conservative Republican Communities, Bill Crowley
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Of late, public and school librarians have repeatedly encountered the unwillingness of many conservative communities and/or schools to support socially just collections and services. This article seeks to broaden the discussion of the factors involved. It does so for several reasons. The first is the reality that achieving a number of socially just library services in conservative communities will require the development of local coalitions. By their very nature coalitions often require compromise. This leads to the second reason, a recognition of the political limitations resulting from progressive demands for a total commitment to progressive ends to secure recognition as …

The important role of knowledge management as a strategic resource in a competitive business environment cannot be overemphasized. Today’s business is plagued with turbulence and stringent competition in the world market resulting in paradigmatic paralysis, and significant organizational changes that necessitate salient and innovative operational processes. For survival, organizations must monitor trends and adapt to both the external and internal environments, make changes in the form of innovation, improve operational processes, increase flexibility and adopt sustainable knowledge-creation activities. This study is qualitative. An in-depth review of literature was conducted across multiple online research databases, supported by accrued knowledge obtained from …
