Standing Up For Open Source, Lee David Jaffe, Greg Careaga Jun 2007

Standing Up For Open Source, Lee David Jaffe, Greg Careaga

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The open source movement is a vital and innovative challenger to commercial channels for software and publishing. Interests and values shared between libraries and open source communities, along with significant functional advantages to the open source model, should lead librarians to adopt open source tools and become more engaged with open source developers and their projects. Instead, there is a significant gap between the potential of open source and the adoption of these tools in libraries. The authors address the causes and potential consequences, and suggest strategies that can be adopted by advocates for open source in libraries.

Mapping Change Management: A Co-Citation Analysis, Brian R. Low Mar 2007

Mapping Change Management: A Co-Citation Analysis, Brian R. Low

Theses and Dissertations

Today's organizations are continually undergoing changes to make improvements in their efficiency and effectiveness. The ability of organizations to effectively implement and sustain successful change, however, has been limited, with most change initiatives failing to attain the desired success. To counter this trend, researchers across several disciplines have worked to provide practitioners better insight into how to facilitate change within their organizations. This research has resulted in many theories as to what constitutes change and how best to implement it, but it lacks a unifying theory that encompasses all aspects of change research. This effort takes a step toward a …

Organizational Leadership In Academic Libraries : Identifying Culture Types And Leadership Roles, Monica Garcia Brooks Jan 2007

Organizational Leadership In Academic Libraries : Identifying Culture Types And Leadership Roles, Monica Garcia Brooks

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this study is to identify organizational culture types and leadership roles among research and non-research libraries in higher education institutions in the United States and to reveal trends that can assist in enacting needed organizational change. Organizational culture and leadership are two intertwined concepts that are strongly aligned with the human element of any supervisory experience. According to Crosby, they help “nurture effective and humane organizations” (Crosby, 2004). This research project sought to test the claims brought forth by library researchers such as Kaarts-Brown et al. in which they reported a tie between the library manager’s ability …

Collaborative Co-Design: The Cal Poly Digital Teaching Library User Centric Approach, Mary M. Somerville, Navjit Brar Dec 2006

Collaborative Co-Design: The Cal Poly Digital Teaching Library User Centric Approach, Mary M. Somerville, Navjit Brar

Library Scholarship

Undergraduate students currently enrolled in US universities represent the first generations to grow up with the digital technologies developed and disseminated in the last decades of the 20th century. Having spent their entire lives using computers, videogames, digital music players, video cams, cell phones, email, instant messaging, and all the other tools and toys of contemporary technology, they think differently (Prensky, December 2001). As a consequence, today’s students are not the people that the US educational system was designed to teach (Prensky, October 2001). It is also the case that traditional design approaches are insufficient for developing enabling information management …

The Anchor, Volume 120.08: November 1, 2006, Hope College

The Anchor: 2006

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Technological Change, Universal Access, And The End Of The Library, Wayne Bivens-Tatum Oct 2006

Technological Change, Universal Access, And The End Of The Library, Wayne Bivens-Tatum

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Library and Information Science (LIS) does not lend itself to philosophizing. Political philosophy offers a useful and necessary approach to thinking about libraries. Teleological thinking helps bring into relief some of the problems and issues of library and information science. When we do not address political problems teleologically, we may confuse means and ends, and ignore ends altogether. As an example of a teleological investigation, the author considers a proposition that some take to be the end of the library, the proposition that libraries should provide free access to all information to all persons all of the time. Should libraries …

Taking Care Of Business: Selecting The Best Periodical Database For Your Business Patrons, J. Cory Tucker Aug 2006

Taking Care Of Business: Selecting The Best Periodical Database For Your Business Patrons, J. Cory Tucker

Library Faculty Research

This study compares ABI/INFORM and Business Source Premier, the two major periodical databases in the business field, to determine which database is covering the major scholarly journals most thoroughly. The comparison was made by compiling a list of major journals based on scholars' choice in the fields of accounting, finance, MIS, and marketing. In the field of management, the journals studied are based on ISI's Journal of Citation Reports. The list was compared with the title lists of journals indexed in each database. The results indicate that the two databases are very similar. ABI/INFORM is more comprehensive in the number …

Creser: Sibi/Usp Staffing Training And Development Program., Adriana Cybele Ferrari, Márcia Elisa Garcia De Grandi,, Mairza Leal De Meirelles Do Coutta

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

It describes the institutionalization of continuous education process of library teams, with prominence for the creation of the Staff Training and Development Portal (Crescer) of University of Sao Paulo´s Integrated Libraries System (SIBi/USP). SIBi/USP understands that continuous qualification aims at promoting organizational changes and developing competencies in order to improve the quality of products and services offered. To achieve these goals, training sessions, events, courses (remote and in loco) are developed and provided on a yearly basis, among other activities that promote professional development. Since the beginning of the process in 2002, 6,467 qualification opportunities for library professionals have been …

Information Society: European Considerations In Economic And Cultural Contexts, George Adam Holland Apr 2006

Information Society: European Considerations In Economic And Cultural Contexts, George Adam Holland

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The phrase "information society" is used across many disciplines, yet consensus on its meaning and significance is lacking. This paper explores possible meanings, with particular emphasis on economic and cultural factors. Frank Webster and Manuel Castells inform the discussion through their theoretical and empirical research on the topic. The European engagement development of information societies is analyzed with particular emphasis on Finland. Following this economic and cultural exploration of the information society, methodological implications are identified for research into information societies and consideration for information professionals.

An Interactive And Iterative Evaluation Approach For Creating Collaborative Learning Environments, Anita Mirijamdotter, Mary M. Somerville, Marita Holst Jan 2006

An Interactive And Iterative Evaluation Approach For Creating Collaborative Learning Environments, Anita Mirijamdotter, Mary M. Somerville, Marita Holst

University Libraries Librarian and Staff Articles and Papers

Inspired by a three‑year Creative University 'arena' initiative at Luleå University of Technology in Sweden, an international team of faculty researchers conducted an exploratory study in 2005, which aimed to investigate the efficacy of an interactive design and evaluation process for technology‑enabled collaborative learning environments. This applied research approach was designed as a collaborative evaluation process for co‑creation of technology‑enabled, learning‑ focused physical and virtual 'learning commons.' Faculty researchers from Sweden and the United States used Soft Systems Methodology tools, including the Process for Organisational Meanings (POM) model, to guide sixty‑two students' participatory co‑design and evaluation activities. In this paper, …

Teams In Library Technical Services, Jack G. Montgomery Jr., Contributor, Rosann Bazirjian, Editor, Rebecca Mugridge, Editor

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Book Gallery

Whether because of budget and staffing concerns or issues with productivity and output, technical services teams have come into being in many organizations. In Teams in Library Technical Services, editors Rosann Bazirjian and Rebecca Mugridge present research and case studies demonstrating what these reasons are and how the use of teams has been and should be applied to libraries. Everything from describing the various types of teams and how to manage them—especially in academic libraries—to exploring recurring themes on the relationships between professional and support staff, the changing roles of librarians, and how managers and teams address issues such …

Giving Thanks, Mark Y. Herring Dec 2005

Giving Thanks, Mark Y. Herring

Dacus Library Faculty Publications

Indulge me for a few moments, will you? I write this column just as we approach the Thanksgiving. You will read it having spent the last few weeks recovering from the Christmas Holidays. It seems appropriate at this time, even conventional, to spend a few moments looking at what we all have to be thankful for, even joyous about. All too often the quotidian cares of life weigh us down unceremoniously, and we forget that we have much to be thankful for.

Building Skills F2f – Using Chat Reference Techniques, Darcy C. Del Bosque, Kimberly Chapman Oct 2005

Building Skills F2f – Using Chat Reference Techniques, Darcy C. Del Bosque, Kimberly Chapman

Library Faculty Research

The UTSA Library, like many organizations, has been experiencing a period of rapid growth and change. Even positive change can cause stress in departments, and one way to help employees deal with change, while still providing customer-oriented service, is to establish a regular forum for discussion that encourages departmental communication.

Training is an important aspect of employee development; however, the literature indicates that, in many organizations, training is often given little attention and relegated to the sidelines due to other demands on staff. With the hiring of new personnel, including a new Head of Reference and a Training Coordinator, the …

May The Bun Be With You: An Annotated Bibliography Of Librarians And Their Image, David M. Salinero, Jill E. Grogg

The Southeastern Librarian

A very real tension exists between librarians’ attempts to alter their image(s) and the popular press’ and the public’s lingering preference for Marian the Librarian similes. As the Hot Picks @ Your Library calendar indicates, librarians take creative opportunities to dissuade the public of the “image of a dourfaced matron behind a forbidding desk” (Gillespie 2003, A01). But how do librarians attempt to frame their own discussion of the classic caricature? The authors wanted to know how librarians themselves have considered and researched the impact of the stereotype on the profession. What follows is a literature review of materials published …

Suddenly Directing: An Interview With Florence Doksansky, Eric C. Shoaf

Publications

The article presents an interview with Florence Doksansky, interim university librarian at Brown University. Doksansky served as associate university librarian at Brown for twenty-one years until early 2004 when her supervisor resigned. Doksansky spoke about the challenges of being an interim director at a medium-size Association of Research Libraries library. The library was in the middle of a multi-year reorganization and into the second year of contract talks with unionized nonprofessional support employees who were working without a contract. In addition, budgets weren't keeping pace with inflation, the physical condition of the libraries was deteriorating and a new offsite storage …

Change And Connections: Passion And Organizational Change, Lynn Baird Jul 2005

Change And Connections: Passion And Organizational Change, Lynn Baird

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

First paragraph:

Librarians are change agents, working in an environment that requires us to be both leading and chasing change. We lead change when we create programs to meet our institutional needs based upon our knowledge of our students and faculty, available resources, and our awareness of the potential for what might be. We chase change when institutional priorities shift suddenly, in response to external forces such as funding or politics, or as a result of leadership transitions. Change can be invigorating for us as it keeps the creative juices flowing. Conversely, it can be exhausting when we feel as …

The Library And The Computer Center: Organizational Patt Erns At Land Grant Universities, Mary K. Bolin Jan 2005

The Library And The Computer Center: Organizational Patt Erns At Land Grant Universities, Mary K. Bolin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

The relationship of the academic library with the campus computing center has been an issue since at least the late 1970s. The issue was discussed at length in the 1980s with little effect on existing organizations. Interest in the issue was rekindled in the 1990s, when a number of institutions merged or aligned the library and the computer center, with varying results. The literature assumes or asserts that it is the norm for academic libraries and computing centers to be merged or administratively aligned. A census of land grant universities contradicts such a view. For this homogeneous group of large …

The Professional Development Of Academic Librarians: How Should Institutions Contribute To The Process?, Gregory A. Smith Aug 2004

The Professional Development Of Academic Librarians: How Should Institutions Contribute To The Process?, Gregory A. Smith

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Professional development is universally recognized in education and librarianship as imperative for ongoing effectiveness. Most—though not all—academic libraries support professional development through financial assistance and release time. However, while funding and release time are necessary to professional growth, they are not sufficient. The role of the leader as a steward of organizational culture suggests that academic library administrators should concern themselves with fostering an environment conducive to their subordinates’ professional development. Innovative professional development programs in place at a number of academic libraries stand as a corrective to the seemingly haphazard practices of many libraries and librarians. Further research on …

Library Collaboration: What Makes It Work? (Keynote Paper), Murray Shepherd

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In previous papers delivered at IATUL Conferences, I described the TriUniversity Group (TUG) library collaboration. I spoke of the advantages and reported that three academic libraries, large (University of Waterloo) medium (University of Guelph) and small (Wilfrid Laurier University) were working together creatively to address a number of issues: • Remote storage of little used library materials, • Development of a web-based, unified and integrated online “catalogue”, • Joint purchases of online resources, and • Rationalization of information resources This pioneering collaborative undertaking, initiated in 1995, is now widely emulated, with some success. The TUG librarians found that collaboration is …

Approaches To Teaching Through Digital Reference, Lisa A. Ellis Apr 2004

Approaches To Teaching Through Digital Reference, Lisa A. Ellis

Publications and Research

As “teaching libraries,” many academic libraries are committed to teaching not only in classrooms but also at the reference desk. As reference has expanded to include digital modes of e-mail and chat, reference librarians are prompted to consider approaches to teaching in these new reference venues in ways that are meaningful to the user. A promising approach to teaching through digital reference is the application of the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards. This paper presents some challenges and benefits of teaching via digital reference. Practical methods for promoting self-directed learning by examining online instruction, and suggestions for effectively advancing a …
