Book Censorship In Post-Tiananmen China (1989-2019), Yuwu Song
Book Censorship In Post-Tiananmen China (1989-2019), Yuwu Song
Journal of East Asian Libraries
Abstract: Censorship has become more prevalent in Chinese cultural and social life since the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre. Modern commentary on Chinese censorship focuses on news media and Internet, but neglects print books, which is part of a broader crackdown on dissent. To fill this gap, the project aims to map the contours of book censorship in China during the past 30 years. The emphasis is on the Chinese authorities’ increasing attempts to dominate people’s minds under Xi Jinping, who ascended to power as the leader of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in 2012. The project reveals different levels of …

Study-Aid Books, Workbooks, And It Equipment As New Materials For School Students In Japanese Public Libraries, Keita Tsuji
Jurnal Ilmu Informasi, Perpustakaan, dan Kearsipan
Japan is no longer a rich country. The poverty rate for “a single adult household with at least one child” is the third highest among the 44 countries of OECD. Public libraries should provide study-aid books, workbooks, and IT equipment to poor students. Based of this idea, we first identified 129 study-aid books and workbooks for junior high and high school students. Next, we investigated whether public libraries of all 1,392 Japanese local governments held them. Then, we asked 631 students whether they wanted public libraries to hold the books and IT equipment such as Nintendo Switch and iPad. Furthermore, …

A Proposed E-Readiness Assessment Model For University Libraries In Nigeria, Muhammad Kabir Abubakar
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Information and communication technology (ICT) deployment has been prompted by the desire to increase effective services and have a favorable impact on organizational development. The development in the creation of e-readiness frameworks in many organizations, including libraries, is as a result of this demand. While the e-readiness study is widely used in libraries developed nations, it has not yet expanded into many libraries in underdeveloped nations. This study’s objective is to close this knowledge gap by outlining a model for e-readiness in Nigeria, with a focus on university libraries. The study has an e-readiness framework with eight (8) variables that …

The literature review technique was used to collect data, focusing on characteristics of publication outputs, focus of the researches, research methods, and summary of key findings. Findings show that research in knowledge management is still limited in Zimbabwe. The corporate sector receives the most focus from KM researchers, followed by knowledge-oriented institutions, the public sector, Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs), media organisations, and agriculture-related enterprises. Universities, despite being both knowledge factories and large consumers of …

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
At the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Criss Libraries' Archives and Special Collections, we are working on a project to digitize and provide access to ALL of our material related to the now defunct UNO football program. The project was conceptualized before I started at UNO just over two years ago, so I envision sharing a bit about projects that promise online access to EVERYTHING as well as the digitization effort, and particularly the access via our content management system Islandora. We use a hosted instance of Islandora 7, so we don't have the true flexibility of open-source software. …

All Things Open
Both academic and entrepreneurial spaces benefit from the use of open resources. This presentation focuses on the latter space, as not every student is going to continue in academia. According to the National Science Foundation's 2012 Science and Engineering Indicators, "less than 17% of new PhDs in science, engineering and health-related fields find tenure-track positions within 3 years after graduation." The numbers are similar across most disciplines. Aajay Murphy prepares students for all potential post-college outcomes in this presentation, not just academia.

Intentional Design: Crafting A Sustainable Internship Program, Claire Du Laney Dunker, Lori Schwartz, Wendy Guerra
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
The University of Nebraska Archives and Special Collections’ internship program was born of the pandemic and has evolved into a structured, sustainable, and mutually beneficial internship program. We, along with archivists everywhere, rushed to modify and create digital projects that would sustain us and our student employees and interns, during an unknown stretch of working from home. While this short-term project creation worked during the height of the pandemic, we needed something more structured for the students and sustainable for archivists. This led us to develop an internship program that centered on a mutually beneficial framework and a healthy work …

Bounded Confidence: How Ai Could Exacerbate Social Media’S Homophily Problem, Dylan Weber, Scott Atran, Rich Davis
New England Journal of Public Policy
The advent of the Internet was heralded as a revolutionary development in the democratization of information. It has emerged, however, that online discourse on social media tends to narrow the information landscape of its users. This dynamic is driven by the propensity of the network structure of social media to tend toward homophily; users strongly prefer to interact with content and other users that are similar to them. We review the considerable evidence for the ubiquity of homophily in social media, discuss some possible mechanisms for this phenomenon, and present some observed and hypothesized effects. We also discuss how the …
