Regulation Of Information Privacy: A Process Tracing Case Study Of Online Behavioral Advertising In The Eea, Thora Knight

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Legislators worldwide are enacting or proposing privacy legislation to address online privacy concerns, with the most consequential global law, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), taking effect as recently as 2018. Scholars have long argued for or against various regulatory strategies (legal, self-regulation, and privacy self-management) as appropriate policy interventions, often through an economic lens. At the same time, research in the Information Systems (IS) domain contributed significantly towards understanding and explaining privacy-related issues in information and communication technologies, with privacy concerns emerging as a vital construct. Drawing on these theoretical foundations and the emerging online behavioral advertising (OBA) research, …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Punk, originating from the economic turmoil of 1970s Britain, has transitioned into the digital realm, shedding its traditional symbols of rebellion while posing questions about contemporary dissent, such as: Are Punk ideals still addressing societal issues and challenging the status quo, or are they becoming more superficial or commercialized? Or are expressions of dissent genuine and rooted in lived experiences, or are they being appropriated for commercial gain? This study delves into the language of the shifting subcultures of Punk, silently thriving online through Cyberpunks, Cypherpunks, Anarchists, Anarcho-capitalists, and Cryptopunks. Each subgroup expresses rebellion uniquely: Cyberpunks through hacking, Cypherpunks through …

Persistent Identifiers And The Next Generation Of Legal Scholarship, Aaron Retteen, Malikah Hall-Retteen

Faculty Scholarship

This article discusses the importance of the most common persistent identifiers in scholarly communications—the digital object identifier and the ORCID identifier—to legal scholarship. Persistent identifiers help preserve and disseminate academic content and data-driven services that leverage this information standard are now integrated into the publication process. Because legal publishers have not widely adopted persistent identifiers, the legal discipline cannot enjoy the benefits offered by this system. This article looks at barriers to implementing persistent identifiers among legal publishers and provides an anecdotal example of creating a sustainable workflow between the law library and student-run law journals.

Data citation promotes accessibility and discoverability of data through measures carried out by researchers, publishers, repositories, and the scientific community. This paper examines how a data citation workflow has been implemented by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) by evaluating publication and data linkages. Two different methods were used to identify data citations: examining publication structural metadata and examining the full text of the publication. A growing number of USGS researchers are complying with publisher data sharing policies aimed to capture data citation information in a standardized way within associated publications. Librarians As Faculty Developers: Shaping Disciplinary Classroom Experiences Through Information Literacy, Rachel Fundator, Michael Flierl, Clarence Maybee, Catherine Frasier Riehle, Maribeth Slebodnik, Amity Saha

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Involvement in faculty development is a promising approach to realizing academic libraries’ goals for information literacy. This study examines an inter-institutional program where librarians partnered with classroom instructors to create projects where students learned to use information in disciplinary ways. Using thematic analysis to examine participant materials, the findings suggest that the informed learning design model underpinning the program supported the creation of information-rich projects and fostered a sense of empowerment in librarians serving as faculty developers. Librarians can advance their role as educators by partnering with classroom instructors and presenting information literacy as a way to foster disciplinary learning.
