Search Engine Coverage Bias: Evidence And Possible Causes, L. Vaughan, M. Thelwall Jan 2004

Search Engine Coverage Bias: Evidence And Possible Causes, L. Vaughan, M. Thelwall

FIMS Publications

Commercial search engines are now playing an increasingly important role in Web information dissemination and access. Of particular interest to business and national governments is whether the big engines have coverage biased towards the US or other countries. In our study we tested for national biases in three major search engines and found significant differences in their coverage of commercial Web sites. The US sites were much better covered than the others in the study: sites from China, Taiwan and Singapore. We then examined the possible technical causes of the differences and found that the language of a site does …

Unlocking Hungary's Libraries: A Case For A Digital Library At Berzsenyi College, Dallas Long Jan 2004

Unlocking Hungary's Libraries: A Case For A Digital Library At Berzsenyi College, Dallas Long

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

As Hungary moves to join the European Union, librarians are noting the need to share the nation’s library collections with non-Hungarian speakers. Currently, Hungary’s digital libraries largely reflect the nation’s heritage as one of the most homogenous European nations and are not easily useable without knowledge of the language. Hungarian is a small language, spoken by about 15 million people worldwide, and the need for disseminating Hungarian knowledge into global knowledge is an important step for integration into the EU. This paper is a case study of Berzsenyi Daniel College’s creation of a digital library for its LIS Department. It …

Content Analysis Of The Leading General Academic Databases, Kelly D. Blessinger, Maureen Olle-Lajoie Jan 2004

Content Analysis Of The Leading General Academic Databases, Kelly D. Blessinger, Maureen Olle-Lajoie

Faculty Publications

Title lists from the three leading general academic databases were compared to evaluate journal content. Some of the elements that were analyzed include subject coverage, the quality of titles provided, accessibility issues, and trends over time for these databases. While database title lists are now readily available on the Internet for comparison, as our article illustrates, these lists need further evaluation for proper assessment.

Finding Answers To Complex Questions, Anne R. Diekama, Ozgur Yilmazel, Jiangping Chen, Sarah Harwell, Lan He, Elizabeth D. Liddy

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

In this chapter, we motivate one potential type of future QA system that deals with questions more complex than simple factoid questions and which provides answers with their supporting context. Our approach is based on the issues we faced when developing and delivering a QA system to deal with real time questions in the domain of RLVs within the larger field of aerospace engineering. This particular domain, the actual users of the system, and the questions asked, all demanded a change in our question-answering strategy. First, the chapter will present background on the project that provided the context and a …

Digital Libraries: Barriers Or Gateways To Scholarly Information?, Alex Bryne

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Unprecedented desktop access to scholarly information has been made possible by the introduction of digital libraries. The powerful combination of digital publications, specialist and generalist databases, sophisticated search systems and portals enables scholars and students to rapidly examine a great variety of the literature in their own disciplines and those new to them. Access is available globally 24 hours a day without geographical limitation. But that access is not without limitations. It is limited by the availability of reliable and affordable information and communication technologies. It is limited to those scholars and students who are affiliated with organisations which have …

Stretching Conceptual Structures In Classifications Across Languages And Cultures., Barbara H. Kwasnik, Victoria L. Rubin Jan 2003

Stretching Conceptual Structures In Classifications Across Languages And Cultures., Barbara H. Kwasnik, Victoria L. Rubin

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

The authors describe the difficulties of translating classifications from a source language and culture to another language and culture. To demonstrate these problems, kinship terms and concepts from native speakers of fourteen languages were collected and analyzed to find differences between their terms and structures and those used in English. Using the representations of kinship terms in the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) and the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) as examples, the authors identified the source of possible lack of mapping between the domain of kinship in the fourteen languages studied and the LCC and DDC. Finally, some preliminary suggestions …

Translation Events In Cross-Language Information Retrieval: Lexical Ambiguity, Lexical Holes, Vocabulary Mismatch, And Correct Translations, Anne Roel Diekema Jan 2003

Translation Events In Cross-Language Information Retrieval: Lexical Ambiguity, Lexical Holes, Vocabulary Mismatch, And Correct Translations, Anne Roel Diekema

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) systems enable users to formulate queries in their native language to retrieve documents in foreign languages. Because queries and documents in CLIR do not necessarily share the same language, translation is needed before matching can take place. This translation step tends to cause a reduction in the retrieval performance of CLIR as compared to monolingual information retrieval. The prevailing CLIR approach and the focus of this study is query translation. The translation of queries is inherently difficult due to the lack of a one-to-one mapping of a lexical item and its meaning, which creates lexical ambiguity. …

What Do You Mean? Finding Answers To Complex Questions, Anne R. Diekema, Ozgur Yilmazel, Jiangping Chen, Sarah Harwell, Elizabeth D. Liddy, Lan He

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

This paper illustrates ongoing research and issues faced when dealing with real-time questions in the domain of Reusable Launch Vehicles (aerospace engineering). The question- answering system described in this paper is used in a collaborative learning environment with real users and live questions. The paper describes an analysis of these more complex questions as well as research to include the user in the question-answering process by implementing a question negotiation module based on the traditional reference interview.

Impact Of Globalisation On Information Seeking: The Role Of Cultural Lenses And Indigenous Knowledge, Ardis Hanson Jan 2003

Impact Of Globalisation On Information Seeking: The Role Of Cultural Lenses And Indigenous Knowledge, Ardis Hanson

Dean's Office Publications

How can understanding cultural lenses help us rethink constructs that have been taken for granted and assist in identifying new problems of significance in the delivery of information and the establishment of discrete, culturally based cyber-communities? With the increased access of global information, a critical question is how does an individual (or political entity) acquire information that is bias-free as possible that can be reviewed and interpreted in the appropriate context (indigenous knowledge). This paper attempts to provide a discussion of cultural lenses and indigenous knowledge in the development of information seeking behaviours and the design of information systems.

Mellon Information Literacy Initiative Grant Report (2000-2003), Gould Library Reference And Instruction Department

Staff and Faculty Work

In 2000 Carleton received a three-year Mellon grant. We wanted to integrate information literacy into the curriculum, focusing on the discipline major. Our call for participants resulted in five departments agreeing to participate. The departments are Classical Languages (including Hebrew), Economics, English, Geology, and History. The initiative offered the library and the departments a wonderful opportunity to focus on information literacy within these disciplines.
