Thinking Globally, Acting Locally: Documenting Environmental Activism In New York State, Brian Keough, Amy C. Schindler

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

A significant component of the political history of New York and other states in the second half of the twentieth century is the extraordinary growth of a social movement directed at environmental issues. The authors completed a case study of a documentation project to collect archival records about the history of environmental affairs in New York State. This article critically examines documentation strategy and the evolution of statewide documentation projects in New York, describes the implementation of a documentation project for environmental affairs, and suggests methods for improving the identification and selection of records of enduring value. Fighting Censorship In America, Who Are The Real Censors?, Dennis Ingolfsland Jan 2003

Fighting Censorship In America, Who Are The Real Censors?, Dennis Ingolfsland

The Christian Librarian

During the last half of the 20'11 century, the American Library Association- through the Office of Intellectual Freedom, the Freedom to Read Foundation and the Intellectual Freedom Action Network (ALAs Office 1995, 13) has emerged as one of America's leading opponents of censorship and advocates of free speech. The American Library Association's opposition to censorship is so absolute that it stands firmly against any library restrictions on access to books, magazines or internet sites even by children (Intellectual 1996, 84-94; cf. Berry 1998, 6; Mason 1997, I 04). There is some evidence, however, to suggest that there is a gap …

Carnegie Library Buildings In Iowa Today, Terri Hudachek Jan 2003

Carnegie Library Buildings In Iowa Today, Terri Hudachek

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to present the history of four Iowa Carnegie Library buildings: Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa, West Liberty, Iowa, and Eldon, Iowa. These four building histories were selected because together they represent the common fates of such buildings, not only in Iowa, but across the country. The Carnegie Library in Eldon remains much the same as the day it opened in May 9, 1913 with many original features intact. The West Liberty Carnegie Library building has been renovated to retain the Carnegie appearance. Cedar Falls had renovated its Carnegie library building with no regard …

Confronting The Challenge Of Information Literacy, Steven L. Baker Jan 2003

Confronting The Challenge Of Information Literacy, Steven L. Baker

The Christian Librarian

Confronting the challenges to any academic institution posed by the revolution in information resources since the appearance of the Internet can be a daunting task. Providing the financial and human resources required to provide reliable and secure access can alone be a major hurdle. The specialized equipment needed to effectively incorporate the new resources into student learning environments present an additional burden. The need to collaboratively manage the systems and adapt staffing patterns to the new resources can challenge the skills of the best administrators. The patterns of information seeking behavior exhibited by students in today's richly diverse information environment …

Franz Leopold Ranke, The Ranke Library At Syracuse And The Open Future Of Scientific History, Siegfried Baur Jan 2001

Franz Leopold Ranke, The Ranke Library At Syracuse And The Open Future Of Scientific History, Siegfried Baur

The Courier

"The recent purchase of the great historical library of Dr. Leopold von Ranke by an American suggests some reflections. There is no doubt that this library, which numbers many thousands of books, pamphlets, manuscripts and documents of all times and all languages, is the finest historical collection in the world.... But this great and invaluable collection, which should have gone to one of the large cities like New York, Boston, Philadelphia or Chicago, or to one of the university towns like Cambridge, New Haven, Ithaca or Ann Arbor, is going to Syracuse, which is neither a large city nor a …

Finding A Common Ground: Working With The Georgian National Archives To Create A Trilingual Database, Peter Carini, Kara Drake Jan 2000

Finding A Common Ground: Working With The Georgian National Archives To Create A Trilingual Database, Peter Carini, Kara Drake

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

On two separate occasions over the past four years, the authors traveled to the former Soviet Republic of Georgia as part of a team charged with the work of training Georgian archivists in international descriptive standards as part of a database project. The Sakartvelo Database Project provided an introduction to Georgian history, culture, and the development of the country's archival program. It also provided a picture of what it is like to work in a former Soviet republic and the reality of what it is to handle language barriers and physical and environmental obstacles.

The “Lost” U.S. Technical Reports: Obtaining Reports From The 1940s And ‘50s, Robert L. Bolin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Although centralized distribution of U.S. government technical reports began in 1946, the reports distributed by predecessors of the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) for the first 15 years are now effectively “lost.” They are not available from NTIS, and they are not listed in the NTIS bibliographic database. Those reports are available from the Photoduplication Service of the Library of Congress, and many are available from other sources as well. This article describes bibliographic tools and resources available to identify those reports and provides advice on how to obtain them at a reasonable price.

Making Histories: The Torres Strait Expedition Of 1898, Elizabeth Edwards Dec 1997

Making Histories: The Torres Strait Expedition Of 1898, Elizabeth Edwards

Pacific Studies

The Cambridge Torres Strait Expedition used photography to address two agendas, both of which were grounded in the temporal ambiguities of photography. Photography was used first as an integrated tool of anthropological investigation, particularly in the field of salvage ethnography and through “reenactment”; and second as a site of social interaction between the expedition and the Torres Strait Islanders through the exchange and display of photographs. I argue that these two agendas and their function as “history” are grounded in the temporal ambiguities inherent in photographic inscription. The first, the scientific, depended on the construction and representation of a “static” …

Novels that are a part of our whole language reading program overwhelmingly ranked as student favorites. The survey resulted in the conclusion that literature in our reading program interested students the most.

Based on this information, an annotated bibliography was created for each novel read as part of our whole language program in Somers Point, Thematically-related complementary …

Turning Pro: Reflections On The Career Of J. Franklin Jameson, Peter J. Wosh Jan 1997

Turning Pro: Reflections On The Career Of J. Franklin Jameson, Peter J. Wosh

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Over the past two decades archivists have moved to define and codify their own separate and distinct profession, inventing a new language, developing a more intensive and expansive training regimen, and constructing a unique theoretical base. Such efforts may have helped archivists to distinguish themselves more clearly from other disciplines, but this new professional orientation has also produced conflicts with former friends and allies over issues such as governmental policies concerning electronic mail, funding priorities for the National Historical Publications and Records Commission, and Freedom of Information Act requests. The historical profession, too, has undergone significant changes as shifting research …

An Annotated Bibliography Of Selected Historical Fiction About The American Frontier From 1840-1899 For Children And Young Adults, Karen Keller

Graduate Research Papers

This project was to produce a bibliography of historical fiction requested by teachers in Johnston Middle School, Johnston, Iowa, that can be used by the eighth-grade classes so that students may choose from a selected list of historical fiction books about the American West that will encompass both their literature theme of the will to survive and the historical setting of the American frontier as it moves West between 1840 and 1899. The fifty books annotated were chosen through criteria selected so as to produce a list of books that would meet the needs of the teachers of this unit. …

The Future Of Archival History, James O'Toole Jan 1995

The Future Of Archival History, James O'Toole

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

More than a dozen years ago, the archival educator and writer Richard Cox outlined the development of American archival history and offered some suggestions for the work that still needed to be done in that field. Drawing on a range of publications, from the obscure to the well-known, he surveyed a century of writing in this country on the history of the archives profession, its people, and its institutions, as that history had appeared in monographs and in scholarly journals of state, regional, and national circulation. For all the output, however, Cox concluded that the coverage was uneven in terms …

Picture Storybooks For Speech Communications Curriculum And Extracurricular Activities: An Annotated Bibliography, Del Brink Jan 1993

Picture Storybooks For Speech Communications Curriculum And Extracurricular Activities: An Annotated Bibliography, Del Brink

Graduate Research Papers

High school speech instructors frequently use picture storybooks in their curriculum. Picture storybooks differ from illustrated storybooks and picture books because they are the only type of the three that includes a balanced union between text and illustrations. An observation made at a high school speech contest in Iowa was the impetus for the formation of a bibliography of picture storybooks suitable for speech contest work. The researcher located, read, annotated, and categorized books reviewed in The Horn Book Magazine between 1989 and 1992. Of the 497 books read, 363 formed a bibliography of picture storybooks divided among these categories: …
