Privilege And Property: Essays On The History Of Copyright, Ronan Deazley, Martin Kretschmer, Lionel Bently
Privilege And Property: Essays On The History Of Copyright, Ronan Deazley, Martin Kretschmer, Lionel Bently
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
Includes sixteen essays on the origins of copyright.
First paragraph:
What is Copyright History?
History has normative force. There was no history of colonialism, gender, fashion or crime until there were contemporary demands to explain and justify certain values. During much of the twentieth century, ‘copyright’ history (the history of legal, particularly proprietary, mechanisms for the regulation of the reproduction and distribution of cultural products – as opposed to the history of art, literature, music, or the history of publishers and art-sellers) was not thought of as a coherent, or even necessary field of inquiry. It was a pursuit of …

Nonknowledge: The Bibliographical Organization Of Ignorance, Stupidity, Error, And Unreason: Part Two, Jay H. Bernstein
Nonknowledge: The Bibliographical Organization Of Ignorance, Stupidity, Error, And Unreason: Part Two, Jay H. Bernstein
Publications and Research
Starting with the Data-Information-Knowledge-Wisdom paradigm in information science it is possible to derive a model of the opposite of knowledge having hierarchical qualities. A range of counterpoints to concepts in the knowledge hierarchy can be identified and ascribed the overall term “nonknowledge.” This model creates a conceptual framework for understanding the connections between topics such as error, ignorance, stupidity, folly, popular misconceptions, and unreason by locating them as levels or phases of nonknowledge. The concept of nonknowledge links heretofore disconnected discourses on these individual topics by philosophers, psychologists, historians, sociologists, satirists, and others. Subject headings provide access to the categories …
Tracing The Archetypal Academic Librarian, Stephen E. Bales
Tracing The Archetypal Academic Librarian, Stephen E. Bales
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper analyzes the available evidence to develop a model of the archetypal academic librarian. It compares three periods to do so: (1) pre-Alexandrian Mesopotamian information institutions, focusing on the seventh century BCE Library of Assurbanipal (considered by many scholars to be the first universal or national library), (2) the Great Library of Alexandria (hereafter referred to as “the Library”), and (3) the twenty-first century American academic library. While the basic functions of the librarian have remained constant over thousands of years, one critical element, however, is missing as an integral element of modern academic librarianship, the creation of new …

Searchers' Perception Of Access Regulations In Nigerian National Archives, Abiola Abioye
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Access is a fundamental issue in archives administration and information management. This study investigated the perception of searchers to access regulations in National Archives of Nigeria. A descriptive survey was adopted for the study with questionnaire and interview as the research instruments. One hundred copies of the questionnaire were administered on searchers who were students of tertiary institutions, scholars, legal practitioners, litigants, government officials and politicians, and seventy-two copies were returned and analyzed. Interviews were also conducted with some of the searchers who were randomly selected. The study revealed that searchers, with varying level of education, used records in the …

Free Websites Of Value For Humanities Students And Faculty Researchers, Eileen Mcelrath
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Studies show that faculty members, particularly those in social sciences, arts, and humanities, question the accuracy, reliability, and sufficiency of web resources for research. Undergraduate students, on the other hand, report that the web provides them information that they use to complete assignments. The purpose of this study is to find free web sites of value for humanities researchers and librarians. The study uses a content analysis of the annotated lists of librarian-evaluated free websites published in Reference & User Services Quarterly from 1999 to 2005 to determine the ones of value for Humanities researchers. Findings to date include approximately …

Transgression Or Stasis? Challenging Foucault In Lis Theory, John Buschman
Transgression Or Stasis? Challenging Foucault In Lis Theory, John Buschman
Library Publications
Michel Foucault (1926–84) is a primary thinker informing the construction of a critical theory of library and information science (LIS), or librarianship. He is widely cited and is adapted in various ways that focus on LIS forms of power, discourse, and so on. Others have addressed Foucault’s topics, but he remains central. Li- brarianship has taken up a prior challenge to more fully explore his work, and it is now time to carefully review the implications of Foucault’s thinking as a foun- dation for a critical-theoretical LIS. Foucault has undergone extensive analysis and critique, and this article is a similar …

Resources On The Historical Study Of Jesus, Dennis Ingolfsland
The Christian Librarian
Jesus of Nazareth has been the center of significant media attention in recent years. Even before Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ," Jesus had been the focus of featu re articles in Time, Newsweek, and U.S. News and World Report. Jesus was also the subject of television documentaries by PBS, A&E, T LC, the History Channel, the Discovery Channel and even a fu ll length prime time special by ABC News. Most presentations focus on Jesus as a man of history. In fact, the last 20 yea rs have been part of what scholars are now calling the "Third …
