The One Size Does Not Fit All Approach: Case Studies In Modeling Embedded Librarianship, Rachel L. Edford, Sandy Avila Jan 2022

The One Size Does Not Fit All Approach: Case Studies In Modeling Embedded Librarianship, Rachel L. Edford, Sandy Avila

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The pandemic and resulting shift to remote work stressed the importance of distance library services. As librarians explored different modes of engagement, embedded librarianship became increasingly important but also more complicated than before. While there is a wealth of literature on embedded librarianship, few authors agree on how to define it or discuss its specific challenges during the pandemic. This paper will present the experiences of two academic librarians working in different departments at the same institution, informed by the literature; the authors will highlight the complexity of embedded librarianship during this unique time while addressing challenges and offering recommendations.

Web archive collections are created with a particular purpose in mind. A curator selects seeds, or original resources, which are then captured by an archiving system and stored as archived web pages, or mementos. The systems that build web archive collections are often configured to revisit the same original resource multiple times. This is incredibly useful for understanding an unfolding news story or the evolution of an organization. Unfortunately, over time, some of these original resources can go off-topic and no longer suit the purpose for which the collection was originally created. They can go off-topic due to web site …

Streaminghub: Interactive Stream Analysis Workflows, Yasith Jayawardana, Vikas G. Ashok, Sampath Jayarathna

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Reusable data/code and reproducible analyses are foundational to quality research. This aspect, however, is often overlooked when designing interactive stream analysis workflows for time-series data (e.g., eye-tracking data). A mechanism to transmit informative metadata alongside data may allow such workflows to intelligently consume data, propagate metadata to downstream tasks, and thereby auto-generate reusable, reproducible analytic outputs with zero supervision. Moreover, a visual programming interface to design, develop, and execute such workflows may allow rapid prototyping for interdisciplinary research. Capitalizing on these ideas, we propose StreamingHub, a framework to build metadata propagating, interactive stream analysis workflows using visual programming. We conduct …

’Make It More Fun’: Residence Life Employees’ Insights On Hosting And Advertising Outreach Programs For Undergraduate Students, Kristen S. Shuyler

Faculty Scholarship

What can library workers learn about student-centered programming and outreach from student employees who design, advertise, and lead programs for college students as part of their employment in a student housing or residence life department? This study draws on cognitive work analysis to understand how employees of the Office of Residence Life (ORL) at a public research university host outreach programs for students. Fourteen interviews were conducted and analyzed to ascertain the definition and purpose of RA-led programming, challenges in this work, and strategies for overcoming challenges. Findings indicate that as these student employees do their programming work, they build …

The Effect Of Dysfunctional Organizational Culture On Burnout In Academic Libraries, Lora Del Rio, Juliet Kerico Gray, Lis Pankl

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

This chapter explores the high incidence of dysfunctional organizational cultures among academic libraries and how these cultures accelerate burnout among librarians, particularly newer librarians. Our data show that there are a variety of factors that lead to dysfunctional organizational cultures in libraries, including generational conflict, salary inequities, lack of representation of women and people of color in leadership positions, and poor leadership. In combating dysfunction and burnout, we recognize the idea that individuals are responsible for managing their burnout through various means of self-care or saying “no.” However, in this book chapter, we assert that it is both the organization’s …

Pieces Of The Whole: Using The Research Process To Integrate Data Management And Information Literacy Skills, Patricia Condon, Megan Bresnahan, Eugenia Opuda

Faculty Publications

The research process is naturally embraced as part of the academic curriculum in higher education. Graduate students write theses and dissertations based on their original scholarships, undergraduate students produce papers for courses and work in labs or in the field, and both participate in faculty-led research projects. The research process is tackled holistically through coursework, yet when library instructors are invited to teach students about information literacy and research data management topics, these may be presented as tangential to or mistimed with other course content and learning activities. In this chapter, the authors present a comprehensive, student-centered model for teaching …

Chapter 12: What Fascinates You? Infographics As Research-Based Inquiry For Artists, Tammi Owens, Camille Hawbaker Voorhees

Criss Library Faculty Publications

While student artists can usually articulate their personal motivations in artistic production, they often do not place their work within the context of research that can add complexity, nuance, and generalized perspective until later in their careers. To help students develop this practice, a librarian and a studio art instructor created and co-taught one assignment in 2D Foundations: Color and Visual Literacy, a required two-dimensional (2D) art studio class for all art majors at the University of Nebraska Omaha. In this chapter, the authors share the infographic assignment, which takes inspiration from information-based art generated by artists such as Laurie …

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is: A Values-Based Evaluation Tool For Collections Decisions, Heather A. Howard, Dave Zwicky, Danielle Walker Jan 2022

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is: A Values-Based Evaluation Tool For Collections Decisions, Heather A. Howard, Dave Zwicky, Danielle Walker

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

As libraries and communities consider institutional values and ethical standards, there is a need to scrutinize how those values and standards connect with collections decisions. An existing body of literature about the contents of the collections exists, with respect to issues like decolonization and open access, but little about the business relationships libraries maintain in order to acquire these collections. In this paper, librarians from Purdue University take a critical approach to identifying the values of their institution at multiple levels, including a newly released Libraries strategic plan, to create a values-based evaluation tool for future collection assessment.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Record keeping is an ancient art that has survived in human activities for millennia, becoming ingrained in their everyday routines. Records that are well-maintained are an important element of an individual's or organization's memory. Many of the records are saved as event logs, transaction logs, and decision logs. The significance of preserving records, particularly when it comes to archiving them is largely concerned with managing the evidence of an organisation's actions as well as the reduction or mitigation of risk connected with it, and is part of an organisation's wider role of governance, risk management, and compliance (Tarantino, 2008).

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Internet Library Resources On Students’ Achievement In Physics, Christian S. Ugwuanyi Phd

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Because the face-to-face form of learning was temporarily suspended at the start of the pandemic, the way learners learned prior to the appearance of coronavirus 2019 (Covid-19) was severely impacted. When the pandemic was at its worst, most developed countries switched to online education, while most developing countries' schools were shut down entirely. A lack of web resources in those developing countries was one of the reasons for this. Internet library resources have been found to have the potential to improve teaching and learning, according to the literature. However, no empirical research has been done in Nigeria to examine the …
