Academic Librarians With Disabilities: A Literature Review, Bridgette L. Whitt
Academic Librarians With Disabilities: A Literature Review, Bridgette L. Whitt
The Southeastern Librarian
Libraries' discussion of disabilities is normally focused on the patrons who are served and not the em-ployees who work within the walls of the institution. The population of adults with disabilities in the United States is growing, and the current research results show that the number of librarians who iden-tify as having disabilities is not close to equally representing the population in the profession. This paper reviews the literature written about academic librarians with disabilities and investigates the issues that are being faced by those librarians with disabilities and the hindrances that are keeping that representa-tion level reduced in the …

Strategic Searching And Source Evaluation: Active Learning Teaching Materials, Tricia Martone, Abigail Murdy, Alexis Gomez
Dartmouth Library Workshops and Presentations
During the Librarians Active Learning Institute (LALI) 2024, Alexis Gomez, Tricia Martone, and Abigail Murdy developed a 50-minute active learning session for a fictional environmental studies class needing to write a research paper on a topic of their choice using peer reviewed articles. The bulk of the active learning session was encompassed in the two handouts, which are a jigsaw for Web of Science (20 minutes) and a modified Send-A-Problem (Send Along) activity (20 minutes). The lesson was designed for 6 students, though it can be scaled. In the practicum, the Web of Science jigsaw had 3 groups of 2 …

Unraveling Collective Anomalies In Data-Driven Systems: Manifestation, Detection, And Enhancement Implications, Mohammad Bakhsh
Unraveling Collective Anomalies In Data-Driven Systems: Manifestation, Detection, And Enhancement Implications, Mohammad Bakhsh
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation presents an in-depth investigation into collective anomalies—complex patterns of data that deviate from the norm when considered as a group, rather than individually. It encompasses three pivotal studies that explore the intricacies of identifying and analyzing these anomalies within online customer reviews and urban traffic patterns. The research initially focuses on the subtle shifts in consumer feedback patterns, highlighting the challenges of detecting early signs of collective anomalies. It then advances to the analysis of urban traffic, emphasizing the detection of anomalous trajectory patterns and their implications for urban planning. The final study introduces a spatio-temporal framework to …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed educational paradigms and professional development, altering how knowledge is acquired, refined, and applied throughout an individual's life. This paper explores the pivotal role(s) of AI in facilitating lifelong learning—a continuous, voluntary pursuit of knowledge driven by individual and professional motivations. AI's capability to personalize learning experiences, provide real-time feedback, and predict future learning needs is fundamental to this transformation. Key applications of AI in education include intelligent coaching systems, adaptive learning platforms, and AI-powered tools such as virtual tutors and chatbots. These technologies have confirmed significant potential in enhancing learning outcomes, reducing …

Library Disaster Preparedness In Southeast Asia: A Systematic Review, Azraai Abidin, Mohd Najib Abdullah, Noor Faezah Shaari, Nur Shurbaniah Saad
ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement
This systematic review, which follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, examines the current state of disaster preparedness in libraries across Southeast Asia. It evaluates existing research using four core emergency preparedness rule elements: risk assessment and planning, the communication plan, policies and procedures, and training and testing. While an initial search identified 488 potential studies, only seven met the strict criteria; these seven studies were from Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. This indicates either a significant gap in library readiness or a lack of comprehensive research on the subject. The results show that most …

Capturing Hidden Narratives With Metadata And Digital Storytelling, Angela Yon, Emily Baldoni, Maddi Loiselle
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
Digital collections provide an information space capable for complex data analysis and visualizations. A metadata strategy with robust description can reach beyond providing access to a collection and inspire new contextual narratives and knowledge. Using the Illinois State Normal University (ISNU) World War I Service Records digital collection as a case study, the authors explored the collections as data model in this significant World War I archival collection to highlight lesser-known stories, including those of the Pioneer Infantry, women, and noncombatants. Through the creation and analysis of metadata, transcription, and images in the collection, a digital exhibit was produced using …

Memetic Memory As Vital Conduits Of Troublemakers In Digital Culture, Alexander O. Smith, Jordan Loewen-Colón
Memetic Memory As Vital Conduits Of Troublemakers In Digital Culture, Alexander O. Smith, Jordan Loewen-Colón
School of Information Studies - Post-doc and Student Scholarship
Recent fears of data capitalism and colonialism often argue using implicit assumptions about cybernetic technology’s ability to automate data about culture. As such, the level of data granularity made possible by cybernetic engineering can be used to dominate society and culture. Here we unpack these implicit assumptions about the datafication of culture through memes, which both act as cultural data and cultural memory. Using Alexander Galloway’s critical method of protocological analysis and descriptions of media tactics, we respond to fears of cybernetic domination. Protocols – the source by which cybernetic technologies enable automated datafication – enables us to respond to …
