Seeding The Vision: Designing A Minority Librarian Residency Program - Part 2, Kawanna Bright, Jayati Chaudhuri, Jill Keally, Maud Mundava
The Southeastern Librarian
This is the second article describing the design and implementation of a Minority Librarian Residency Program at the University of Tennessee Libraries. The first article, which appeared in the spring 2004 issue of The Southeastern Librarian, provided the background for “Seeding the Vision” and outlined the process used to identify, recruit, and interview qualified librarians for the residency positions. In this article, readers will learn about the final steps in the search process and hear from the residents themselves about their experiences to date.

Information And Communication Technologies And The Effects Of Globalization: Twenty-First Century “Digital Slavery” For Developing Countries—Myth Or Reality?, L. A. Ogunsola
E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)
Abstract
The main goal of this paper is to examine the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) revolution and the concept of globalization as they effect developing countries. Globalization as one of the reasons for possible widening of the gap between the poor and the rich nations was examined and the emerging concept of “digital slavery” was carefully evaluated. The wide gap in availability and use of ICTs across the world and the influences ICTs exert on globalization at the expense of developing countries were carefully examined and suggestions and necessary policies were offered for developing countries to leap-frog the industrialization …

Leaves Of Grass At 150, University Libraries--University Of South Carolina
Rare Books & Special Collections Publications
This booklet accompanied the exhibit which marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of Whitman's major work, Leaves of Grass (1855). The items on display were drawn chiefly from the Thomas Cooper Library's Joel Myerson Collection of Nineteenth-Century Literature, and this booklet records the arrangement and explanatory text of the exhibit as actually mounted. The exhibit is arranged chronologically, to show the growth and development of Whitman's poetry, and the effects on his books of his own close involvement in their production. Included are all the major editions in the development of Leaves of Grass, from two variants of …

A Researcher's Research Agenda For Scholarly Communication In Canada, William F. Birdsall, Kathleen Shearer
A Researcher's Research Agenda For Scholarly Communication In Canada, William F. Birdsall, Kathleen Shearer
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Despite millions of dollars being spent on research each year in Canada, little attention is paid to the dissemination of the results of research. There is a disconnect between Canadian public policies in this area; although a high priority is assigned to the generation of research, there is a lack of policies addressing its dissemination. Meanwhile, the environment in which research knowledge is being disseminated is undergoing a profound transformation because of several important drivers. In particular, these drivers include new technology, changing research patterns, new users, economics, and commercialization. The major objective of this study was to examine the …

A Study Of Culturally Diverse Materials In Elementary School Media Centers, Marie E. Mawson
A Study Of Culturally Diverse Materials In Elementary School Media Centers, Marie E. Mawson
Theses and Dissertations
Our country is more culturally diverse today than at any other time in its history, therefore there is a need for greater understanding among people and awareness of other cultures. A prime time to develop this understanding and awareness is during the elementary school years. School library media specialists can be foremost in providing materials that facilitate learning about all cultures. This study examined the multicultural collections of four elementary school media centers within the Pleasantville School District. The study was conducted by examining the Online Public Access Catalog for the identified variables and then by conducting a visual search …
Glbtq Characterization In Young Adult Novels, 1998-2004, Debra I. Lecates
Glbtq Characterization In Young Adult Novels, 1998-2004, Debra I. Lecates
Theses and Dissertations
Since the first young adult (YA) novel with gay content appeared in 1969, the number of gay-themed novels available for teens has increased significantly. However, research has shown that the long-awaited movement away from stereotyped characters and conservative storylines and into more realistic portrayals has been slow in materializing. This study utilized a content analysis of 22 YA novels with homosexual content to investigate whether changes have occurred in the portrayal of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (GLBTQ) characters and themes between earlier studies and 1998-2004. A total of 26 characterization and plot elements in each novel were analyzed …
