(R)Evolution In The Information Industry: What The Information Industry Can Learn From The Music Industry, Amy M. Elliott

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

A failure to adapt to and adopt new and changing technology caused the music industry to crash, a fate that the information industry currently faces. This paper is an overview of the music industry's crash, as a result of emerging digital technology, and the lessons that the information industry can learn from the music industry's mistakes in order to avoid its own crash now that technology allows for quicker, easier, and cheaper publication. In the 1980s and 1990s record companies refused to effectively adapt to and adopt the new digital technologies of CDs, MP3s, and digital recording. This resulted in …

Diversity Plans And Programs: Arl Spec Kit 319, Charlene Maxey-Harris, Toni Anaya

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

In 1990, ARL published SPEC Kit 165 Cultural Diversity Programming in ARL Libraries and SPEC Kit 167 Minority Recruitment and Retention in ARL Libraries. Both of these documents provided a wealth of information about library programs and services that addressed the needs of a diverse user group, minority staff recruitment and retention strategies, and approaches to managing an ethnically/culturally diverse workforce. While survey results in those SPEC Kits indicated that progress had been made since the 1960s, respondents indicated they thought there was much more to do to ensure that academic and research library staff are representative of all …

From Passive To Pervasive: Changing Perceptions Of The Library's Role Through Intra-Campus Partnerships, Isaac Gilman, Marita Kunkel

Collaborative Librarianship

Traditional views of librarianship, and of academic libraries, have focused on the library's role as a collector of external resources for student and faculty use. As this role is increasingly challenged by the explosion of openly available online content, however, academic libraries must move beyond this limited perception of our utility and expand our role to become partners in a broader range of scholarly activities at our institutions. At Pacific University (Oregon), the University Library has developed a series of partnerships and services (many supported by our institutional repository platform) that extend the Library's reach and that lend needed support …

Collaborative Librarianship

This article provides an overview of a collaborative project of the University of Oregon Libraries, Infographics Lab, and an art history professor to create a virtual research guide, entitled, “Archaeology and Landscape in the Altai Mountains of Mongolia.” Offering accompanying digital image archives, this project serves as a model for humanities data preservation and presents a collaborative strategy for promoting faculty research output in a new media environment. In addition to the typical challenges faced in digital projects, the specialized nature of the content and multiple participants with varied areas of expertise added further challenges. Drawing on “lessons learned,” a …

The Unforgettable June 2008 Cedar River Flood, Keri Annis Jan 2010

The Unforgettable June 2008 Cedar River Flood, Keri Annis

Graduate Research Papers

Natural disasters such as flooding cause emotional and financial strains. Among those directly affected are children. Communities are forever changed after suffering loses due to flooding. Informational text provides discussion and comprehension for children. An informational booklet about the devastating June 2008 Cedar River flood and the effects it has had on the Cedar Rapids community would benefit third graders in the Cedar Rapids Community School District. Due to the recency of this flood, no informational books about it have been published for children. The purpose of this research project was to create an informational booklet using a non-fiction expository …

Sheldon Community History Traveling Trunk Project, Jan M. Kinderknecht Jan 2010

Sheldon Community History Traveling Trunk Project, Jan M. Kinderknecht

Graduate Research Papers

National, state, and local standards guide education in what is taught in the classrooms today. A lack of resources is often a problem in teaching these standards, especially at the local level. The Sheldon third grade teachers needed resources to fulfill the teaching expectations about their local community. The purpose of this project was to develop a traveling trunk filled with primary and secondary resources to be used in the teaching of a social studies unit on the community of Sheldon. Deciding what people, places, and events to include in these resources is often a concern. Another concern was what …

Continued Viability: A Review Of The Life Sciences Library At Indiana University In A Time Of Institutional Change And Proposed Branch Library Downsizing, J B. Hill, Brian Winterman Jan 2010

Continued Viability: A Review Of The Life Sciences Library At Indiana University In A Time Of Institutional Change And Proposed Branch Library Downsizing, J B. Hill, Brian Winterman

Faculty Scholarship

There has been a growing realization that academic libraries need to change to serve a new generation of learners and researchers. Efforts to enhance the "Main Library" on campus with extended hours, coffee shops, and information commons have created modern, user-friendly environments that support changing student needs and expectations.  Generally fewer resources have been given to upgrading smaller branch libraries. The need to modernize older spaces along with the availability of electronic collections, campus demands for classroom/lab space and financial pressures on libraries have prompted a rethinking of the role of branch libraries. Actively pursuing initiatives to re-envision library spaces …

Map/Geographic Information Systems (Gis) Collection Development Policy, Adonna Fleming

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Collection Development Policies

Technology has changed the focus of this collection in recent years. Presently, digital access to both maps and GIS data is the primary goal. However, maintenance of the paper map collection is vital, as it supports the graduate and undergraduate curricula in many areas. The paper map collection supports students studying geology, natural resources, geography, Great Plains studies, political sciences, history, community and urban planning, and architecture.

The University Libraries are a regional depository for U. S. Government documents, and the majority of maps in the Libraries' collection are distributed through this program. Although, most new maps currently received through …
