Library Staff Publications, Presentations & Journal Articles
For many first-generation college students, the university library can seem like an intimidating space and present challenges that often aren’t encountered by traditional students. This panel discussion focuses on how academic libraries are creating community and space for historically marginalized students. In this presentation, panelists from three different academic libraries discuss how they’ve developed programs and enhanced instruction to support first-generation students on their campuses. Dymond Bush discusses how she invited students from Alpha Alpha Alpha, the First Generation Student Honor Society, into the library through programming in the virtual reality lab to encourage their sense of belonging in the …

Background
The SKMC Office of the Dean through its Graduate Medical Education (GME) Section identified a need for more comprehensive support for GME research efforts. This was intensified as the residency program requirements began to formalize the expectations and quantification of scholarly output for both trainees and core GME faculty.1 In consultation with the Director of the Academic Commons, this GME-focused position was conceptualized to better meet the needs of our residents and faculty, and thus enhance the scholarly projects of our GME constituency. This would build on existing scholarly support2 including professional writing services.3 As part of the Information …

Abstract
This study was carried out to find out if students’ low library visit in FUPRE is a result of ineffective library orientation and the author proffered suggestions on how the programme can be made more robust to truly impact the students in their library use. The study was guided by three objectives and the survey research design was adopted for the research. The population of the study comprises 1000 registered students out of which 69 were purposely selected as a sample through a convenient sampling technique. The researcher sent out eighty-two(82)questionnaires and sixty-nine(69) were returned. Data was gathered with …

Beyond Misinformation: Strategies And Tactics For Addressing The Growing And Pernicious Problem Of The Misrepresentation And Misappropriation Of Research, Winn W. Wasson
Librarian Publications
The contemporary information landscape has produced numerous incidents of researchers having their research misunderstood, misrepresented, or misappropriated—or worse, being subjected to intimidation and harassment—by individuals or groups who seek to cherry-pick evidence in support of ideological agendas or who wish to suppress evidence that counters those same agendas. While the covid-19 pandemic elevated these tactics in their frequency, visibility, and intensity, this phenomenon did not start or end with the pandemic. To help prepare current and future researchers for the possibility that their research might be misrepresented, misappropriated, or politicized in other ways by ideologically motivated individuals or groups, Syracuse …

What happens when you combine archivists and non-archivists with good intentions, unprocessed collections, institutional push to seek grants, competing pressures and deadlines? At the University of Nebraska at Omaha Archives and Special Collections, this familiar scenario occurred during a period focused on prioritizing Latinx collections including personal papers, Office of Latino and Latin American Studies Records, and oral histories. During our presentation, we will share how archivists attempted to wrangle multiple funding streams to meet processing, outreach, and digitization goals while internal and external forces took a toll. These included stakeholder expectations, the complexities of student employment, campus events, and …

Since the virus commonly known as COVID-19 first made its way to the United States in March 2020, three classes of community college students have had an introduction to higher education unlike any other in living memory. The mixed method approach consists of a survey aimed towards rural college librarians and subsequent in-depth interviews. This study identifies attempts to retain connections with faculty and students, as well as adjustments in …

Sowing Seeds For Success: Equitable Grading In The Information Literacy Classroom, Alicia G. Vaandering
Public Services Faculty Presentations
What impact does your grading and assessment have on student success and retention? Research has shown that traditional grading can have a negative impact on student learning by placing students who come to the classroom with less knowledge or experience with class content at a disadvantage. This session will introduce the practice of ungrading, an umbrella term that encompasses a wide range of equitable grading strategies and practices like specifications and contract grading. Together, attendees will question how library and LIS educators can rethink their grading on a spectrum that ranges from redesigning a single assignment to overhauling an entire …

Library Anxiety: How Elements Of Morrison’S Fourth Place And The Fast Casual Approach From The Restaurant Industry May Make The Academic Library Space More Inviting, Tara J. Kunesh
Georgia Library Quarterly
The concept of library anxiety was introduced by Constance Mellon in 1986. Since then, studies have attempted to shed light upon this phenomenon to mitigate the feelings of apprehension students may feel when utilizing the academic library space or when seeking the professional help of librarians. This literature review examines the literature and, specifically, discusses whether it is possible to configure the physical library space in a more inviting way. It highlights sociology of space theories as well as concepts behind the fast casual movement employed by the restaurant industry as possible routes to improvement.

Regulation Of Information Privacy: A Process Tracing Case Study Of Online Behavioral Advertising In The Eea, Thora Knight
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Legislators worldwide are enacting or proposing privacy legislation to address online privacy concerns, with the most consequential global law, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), taking effect as recently as 2018. Scholars have long argued for or against various regulatory strategies (legal, self-regulation, and privacy self-management) as appropriate policy interventions, often through an economic lens. At the same time, research in the Information Systems (IS) domain contributed significantly towards understanding and explaining privacy-related issues in information and communication technologies, with privacy concerns emerging as a vital construct. Drawing on these theoretical foundations and the emerging online behavioral advertising (OBA) research, …
Is The Language Surrounding Current Punk Culture Signaling A Watering Down Of Dissent? Culture Mapping The Signifying Language Of Present-Day Punk Against Original Punk To See If It Is Still Addressing Societal Issues And Challenging The Status Quo., Marie Lena Tupot
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Punk, originating from the economic turmoil of 1970s Britain, has transitioned into the digital realm, shedding its traditional symbols of rebellion while posing questions about contemporary dissent, such as: Are Punk ideals still addressing societal issues and challenging the status quo, or are they becoming more superficial or commercialized? Or are expressions of dissent genuine and rooted in lived experiences, or are they being appropriated for commercial gain? This study delves into the language of the shifting subcultures of Punk, silently thriving online through Cyberpunks, Cypherpunks, Anarchists, Anarcho-capitalists, and Cryptopunks. Each subgroup expresses rebellion uniquely: Cyberpunks through hacking, Cypherpunks through …
