Never Judge A Website By Its Cover: A Mixed-Methods Investigation Into The Effectiveness Of A Tutorial On Lateral Reading, Andrea Baer, Daniel G. Kipnis Mar 2023

Never Judge A Website By Its Cover: A Mixed-Methods Investigation Into The Effectiveness Of A Tutorial On Lateral Reading, Andrea Baer, Daniel G. Kipnis

Libraries Scholarship

This poster will provide results of an IRB-approved study that assessed the effectiveness of an online tutorial on evaluating sources through lateral reading. Students who used lateral reading strategies were much more likely to accurately identify questionable sources as such. As students gained practice with lateral reading, the accuracy of their evaluations overall improved. Final reflection activities suggest that students' learning deepened as they considered ways that they might revise their evaluation strategies and how they might apply lateral reading strategies in their everyday life. In line with other research on lateral reading, this brief instructional intervention appears to have …

A Body Without A Soul: Why Print Still Matters In Legal Research, Mari Cheney, Heather Simmons Mar 2023

A Body Without A Soul: Why Print Still Matters In Legal Research, Mari Cheney, Heather Simmons

Articles, Chapters and Online Publications

This article argues that print still has a place in legal research pedagogy and that some materials should still be collected in print in addition to online should the budget allow for it due to five primary reasons: (1) stability of legal information; (2) context; (3) information literacy; (4) algorithm bias; and (5) the discovery of information. Since many law library budgets are shrinking, there are creative ways for online legal publishers to make online material more print-like should libraries be unable to purchase both print and online material.

The University Of Wisconsin And The Development Of Librarianship In The Philippines, Bradley Brazzeal Mar 2023

The University Of Wisconsin And The Development Of Librarianship In The Philippines, Bradley Brazzeal

UL Publications

The Spanish-American War of 1898 ushered in an era of American rule over the Philippines that formally ended in 1946. An expansive colonial government developed with Americans filling most professional positions early on. There was a slow transition to Filipinos holding those positions, and this process can be seen in the field of librarianship. By the middle of 1924, library leadership and the teaching of library science was firmly in the hands of Filipinos. The University of Wisconsin and those associated with the institution, both Americans and Filipinos, played leading roles in the development of Philippine librarianship. This article explores …

Student Information Use During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Heather A. Howard, Annette Bochenek, Zoeanna A. Mayhook, Trena Trowbridge, Steven Lux

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Since early 2020, life for students has changed tremendously. It has been a time of stress, turmoil, and trauma for students. This paper examines the results of a mixed-methods study undertaken in 2021 using surveys and follow-up focus groups to determine if and how student information use has changed. To answer this, we explored student use of news sources, social media sources, political affiliations, and information responses, coupled with to what extent these factors demonstrate or impact potential changes in information …

Inclusive Or Harmful? A Critical Content Analysis Of Tutorial Offerings From R1 Academic Libraries, Carrieann Cahall, Rosan Mitola, Chelsea Heinbach, Amber Sewell

Library Faculty Research

Academic libraries frequently utilize online tutorials to meet student and instructor needs and adapt to expanding remote learning environments. Offering accessible and inclusive tutorials should be the bare minimum, yet, as suggested in Clossen and Proces and Clossen, tutorials inconsistently meet the basic requirements to be considered functionally accessible for all users. As shown by Roth and Turnbow, merely following Universal Design for Learning principles is not enough to offer truly inclusive tutorial content. Additionally, best practices tend to focus on technical suggestions and overlook critical content and pedagogical considerations. There is little guidance for creating holistically inclusive tutorials and …

In 1999, Eastlib’s functionality was enhanced to allow its subscribers and the general public to browse and search through email discussions online. However, due to unanticipated system setting changes, it was discovered in March 2020 that access to the online Eastlib archive was limited to postings …

Designing Hybrid Human-Ai Orchestration Tools For Individual And Collaborative Activities: A Technology Probe Study, Vanessa Echeverria, Kexin Yang, Luettamae Lawrence, Nikol Rummel, Vincent Aleven

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Combining individual and collaborative learning is common, but dynamic combinations (which happen as-the-need arises, rather than in pre-planned ways, and may happen on an individual basis) are rare. This work reports findings from a technology probe study exploring alternative designs for classroom co-orchestration support for dynamically transitioning between individual and collaborative learning. The study involved 1) a technology-probe classroom study in an authentic, AI-supported classroom to understand teachers' and students' needs for co-orchestration support over dynamic transitions; and 2) workshops and interviews with students and teachers to get informed feedback about their lived experiences. 118 students and three teachers from …

The Politics Of Open Access And The Decolonization Of Knowledge, Monica Berger Jan 2023

The Politics Of Open Access And The Decolonization Of Knowledge, Monica Berger

Publications and Research

Bibliodiversity is a critical concept in mitigating epistemic injustice and coloniality. Scholarly communities must determine their own agendas in order to create diverse pathways for varied knowledge circuits across local, regional, and international boundaries. Virtue epistemology, epistemic injustice, epistemic coloniality, and scholarly communications share some common ground, albeit utilizing very different rhetoric and discourse. Epistemic injustice and coloniality, in particular, align with concerns related to scholarly communications. Subsequently, I will provide an overview of open access, addressing its history and how current conditions that have resulted in the domination of the author pays model and marginalization of Southern authors. The …
