Reversing The Downward Curve: When Is Progressive Discipline Necessary And How To Focus On Positive Improvement And Retention Within An Access Services Department?, Kay Coates, Jessica Garner

University Libraries: Faculty Presentations

A challenge that many leaders face in Access Services is managing employee relations. A team with high morale will be well-functioning, collegial, and more likely to represent the library positively. What is a leader to do when they notice a slow degenerative change in morale or when a department has become toxic? This is when clearly defined progressive discipline can be used as a tool to guide a department back on track. Progressive discipline should not be punitive especially if it incorporates a sense of belonging steeped in DEI. Using positive discipline techniques that reinforce connectedness, team spirit, and genuine …

Reading Perceptions Of Intrinsically Motivated High School Juniors, Judy Henning, Sherry R. Crow

Advanced Education Programs Faculty Publications

Studies show pleasure reading results in academic benefits but declines between elementary and secondary years. The question addressed is “what are the experiences in the lives of juniors (aged 16-18) that foster intrinsic motivation to read for pleasure?” Juniors from four mid-western U.S. schools with varied ethnic and socio-economic profiles were identified as highly and distinctly intrinsically motivated for pleasure reading. Interviews revealed participants excelled academically and had family members who were readers. They read to escape stress, occupy time, and investigate careers. Rarely reading for rewards, they were “opportunistic readers.” Relationships with librarians were important in finding good books …

Despite significant delays and unforeseen obstacles, the project was ultimately successful in achieving its goals. The project served as a valuable learning experience, highlighting the importance …

Creating reliable links to library resources is a challenging task, for patrons and library personnel alike! Databases have different linking requirements, ranging from identifying the correct base URL to revising the URL for remote authentication. Often, databases’ built-in linking features are unreliable, especially for off-campus users. Linking isn’t just a technical issue, it’s an equity issue. Ai As A License Review Assistant, Nat Gustafson-Sundell

Library Services Publications

I will present the steps we have taken to develop a prototype AI assistant for license review. I’ll explain our criteria for the selection of an AI tool for this project. We reviewed ChatGPT, Claude 2, Bard, and PDF readers. My goal was to develop an initial prototype in a Jupyter Notebook environment so I could easily re-load context information, including a license checklist, but I’ll explain why I revised this goal, instead to linger over license review interactions with ChatBots. I’ll discuss early results, demonstrate example license review interactions, and outline my next steps.
