All the cumulative actions undertaken by an individual or an organisation to ensure that any content is usable across generations of information technology is known as digital preservation. Although digital preservation is not a new concept for libraries as it almost started in mid 1980s, right from then the libraries have been migrating and refreshing their OPAC records as well as their databases to keep them updated with the emerging systems, software’s and technologies. The libraries are spending larger portions of their budgetary allocations either for procuring or accessing digital products and services (digital content). Archiving and preservation of digital …

Satisfaction of library users is of paramount in libraries. Attaining this requires the library dimensions of service, personnel and infrastructure to be all excellent. Library services entail first and foremost a collection that is both in print and non-print formats and that supports the curricular offerings of the university. To ensure that these materials are maximized by the users, library personnel are needed. Comfortable infrastructure that includes furniture and equipment facilitates the library’s role as partner in the university’s offering for quality education.
As users are now the focal point of library work, feedback mechanisms must be in place. Satisfaction-survey …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
In academic libraries, information resources are increasing at an alarming rate due to information explosion and development in information and communication technology. Open access resources available for access are also increasing. Academic libraries are putting their best effort to make the process of conducting literature search much easier as users find it difficult to search for literature on a given research topic through several types of resources separately. This necessitated the integration of information resources for easy access. A Web-Scale Discovery tool integrates library subscribed content, library catalogue, digital repositories, open access resources and offers a search and retrieval interface …

Strategic Source Evaluation: Addressing The Container Conundrum, Alyssa Russo, Amy Jankowski, Stephanie Beene, Lori Townsend
University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Purpose
This paper argues that information containers provide valuable context clues that can help students make choices about how to engage with information content. The authors present a strategic approach to source evaluation rooted in format and authority threshold concepts.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors developed a source evaluation strategy with the objective of deciding whether to trust an information source. This strategy involves a set of cues to help readers mindfully engage with both the container and content of a given source.
Findings
When conducting research, non-experts are asked to evaluate content in the absence of relevant subject expertise. The cues …

Creating And Deploying Usb Port Covers At Hudson County Community College, Lotta Sanchez, John P. Delooper
Publications and Research
In 2016, Hudson County (NJ) Community College (HCCC) deployed several wireless keyboards and mice with its iMac computers. Shortly after deployment, library staff found that each device’s required USB receiver (a.k.a. dongle) would disappear frequently. As a result, HCCC library staff developed and deployed 3D printed port covers to enclose these dongles. This, for a time, proved very successful in preventing the issue. This article will discuss the development of these port covers, their deployment, and what worked and did not work about the project.

Citation Rates For Ohio State Graduate Theses & Dissertations: Trends, Surprises, And Inaccuracies, Daniel S. Dotson
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The Ohio State University’s holdings of graduate theses and dissertations were examined to determine if highly-downloaded titles tended to be highly-cited. The study found that citation rates were highly variable and did not necessarily correspond to download rates. This included very highly downloaded titles with low citation rates, and lesser-downloaded titles with high citation rates. The study found that Google Scholar, which was used to identify citation rates, too often counts theses and dissertations as a version of a different work with the same title, even if it is another format and sometimes with additional authors. This article will share …

Holy Listening In Reference Work: A Sacred Aspect Of The Christian Librarian’S Calling, Cynthia Strong
SPU Works
Along with all Christians, I live out a vocation – both a general and a missional calling. More specifically, as a Christian who is a librarian, my missional calling is to serve my patrons. In my experience, the best way that I can fulfill this service is by listening. As Dietrich Bonhoeffer writes in Life Together, “[t]he first service one owes to others in the community involves listening to them” (1954, p. 97).
Many pastors and spiritual directors write on the practice and importance of listening for the work they perform. The listening they do is shaped by their …

Mississippi, while it may be considered a rural area, contains cities along the Gulf of Mexico and other regions throughout the state that have a diverse population, which includes Hispanics. Libraries must be receptive to the communities they serve and must be aware of community demographics so that they may provide the necessary resources to accommodate them. The objective of this study is to analyze the availability of Spanish and Spanish bilingual literature.

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
Five take-away messages:
Early and fast dissemination, increased opportunities for feedback and openness are seen as the main benefits of preprints.
The main concerns over preprints are the lack of quality assurance, media potentially reporting inaccurate research and journals rejecting articles if a preprint has been posted.
Twitter has been playing a key enabling role in the current second wave of preprints and preprint servers. It also appears to be the main way researchers are exposed to preprints in the first place.
It is not clear who will be responsible for posting preprints in the long-term – researchers or publishers? …
