Collaborating Across Campus To Advance Open Access Policy Compliance, Andrew Johnson, Melissa Cantrell, Ryan Caillet
Collaborative Librarianship
In 2018, the Data and Scholarly Communication Services Unit (DSCS) at the University of Colorado Boulder began implementing two open access (OA) policy workflows with the aim of increasing content in the institutional repository CU Scholar, expanding awareness of the campus OA policy that was passed in 2015, and decreasing the burden on researchers for participation in the policy. DSCS leveraged collaborative relationships with other library departments and campus units in order to mobilize the data, infrastructure, procedures, and documentation to execute these workflows. The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) workflow identifies existing open access publications by CU Boulder …

The Anchor: 2019
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

“Who’S Driving The Bus?” Or How Digitization Is Influencing Archival Collections, Kathelene Mccarty Smith, David Gwynn, Beth Ann Koelsch, Jennifer Motszko
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
Archivists who work directly with unique collections, as well as librarians and other professionals who coordinate digitization, generally agree that access should be prioritized. However, each group has its own goals, standards, and timelines that may conflict with those of their colleagues. The push to maximize access to collections may, in some cases, go so far as to influence collecting policies. Is the lure of rapid digitization affecting best practices of arrangement and description? If online access to the collections is the ultimate goal, and if each stakeholder has a different perspective on how best to accomplish this, who decides …

What Are We Doing? Capturing The Uncaptured: Workload Data To Demonstrate Service, David Brennan
What Are We Doing? Capturing The Uncaptured: Workload Data To Demonstrate Service, David Brennan
Charleston Library Conference
Capturing service data can be difficult, particularly for technical services and electronic resources librarians—using standard tools such as RefTracker is cumbersome, and taking more time to enter the transaction than it actually took to perform the task is an impediment to gathering good service data. The services provided by these librarians are equally as public-facing as those provided at the reference desk, but are often not captured or reported. A possible solution is to use sent e-mail as a data source for demonstrating services provided by technical services and electronic resources librarians. This lightning round demonstrates one such approach using …

The Future Of Research Information: Open, Connected, Seamless, Annette Thomas
Charleston Library Conference
We live in the age of the web. For information professionals in particular, this has been the defining fact of the last 25 years. It has enabled ever greater quantities of research to be published, expanded the range of media we can use, and offered new possibilities for recognizing and rewarding research contributions. But such opportunities also bring challenges and pitfalls. If we do the right things, this could be a golden age for research, but to make the most of it we must embrace the original principles that made the web itself such a powerful force.

Yet libraries’ leadership in connecting learners to knowledge is at the heart of producing many of the key skills sorely needed in robust societies and economies. Librarianship has many untapped opportunities for positioning itself as a prominent strategic partner. This paper outlines current research on the economic and societal context for …
