Table of Contents Newsletter

Join Victoria Peters (Scholarly Communication and Resource Services Librarian) in discussing Open Access at DePauw Tuesday, Oct. 21 - 11:30am in the Wood Study (Roy O. West Library). Open Access Week’s theme seeks to encourage a candid conversation about which approaches to open scholarship prioritize the best interests of the public and the academic community—and which do not. By situating our campus OA history within the broader movement, this session will help faculty understand the ethical and practical implications of open access, see how institutional policies support their work, and identify opportunities to contribute to a more equitable scholarly ecosystem.

Development Of A Lightweight Dataset Catalog With Digital Commons, Claire Warner, Amy Reese, Marla Hertz Oct 2025

Development Of A Lightweight Dataset Catalog With Digital Commons, Claire Warner, Amy Reese, Marla Hertz

Libraries Professional Work

Many academic libraries maintain dataset catalogs to make the research data produced by their institutions more findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR). These catalogs use a variety of approaches to gather metadata for dataset records and may be hosted on one of several platforms. Our approach is to develop Python code and leverage APIs to locate relevant datasets, then harvest and clean the associated metadata. The cleaned metadata is manually curated and enhanced before being added to the Dataset Catalog. We employ the hosted institutional repository Digital Commons to display the dataset records. Combining API harvesting and automated data cleaning …

A Humanistic Approach To Graduate Student Research Consultations, Tyler Manolovitz

Journal of Graduate Librarianship

This paper examines the benefits of a humanistic approach to research consultations with graduate students due to their unique research needs and lived experiences. Graduate students undertake complex, long-term research projects that require sophisticated information literacy skills and specialized support. Beyond these technical needs, graduate students often experience library anxiety and academic pressure stemming from their varied backgrounds, demanding lives, and a wide range of research knowledge and experience. Personalized, one-on-one research consultations offer an ideal platform to address both the technical and emotional needs of graduate students. By infusing research consultations with humanistic principles, including empathy, authenticity, emotional intelligence, …
