A Reprise, Or Round Three: Using A Database Management Program As A Decision-Support System For The Cancellation Of Serials, Judith M. Nixon
A Reprise, Or Round Three: Using A Database Management Program As A Decision-Support System For The Cancellation Of Serials, Judith M. Nixon
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Annual journal inflation rates of eight percent or higher have compelled libraries to cancel journals. Since 1992 Purdue Libraries have had three major cancellation projects. This article reviews how the Humanities, Social Science and Education Library approached this task in 2009 and developed a database management program to identify titles based on two criteria: low use and the availability of the title in full text in one of three aggregator databases. The education and humanities departments reached the cancellation goal, but several social science departments had to transfer funds from the book budget to accommodate their journal subscription costs. This …
Using A Permanent Usability Team To Advance User-Centered Design In Libraries, Jane Nichols, Alison M. Bobal, Susan Mcevoy
Using A Permanent Usability Team To Advance User-Centered Design In Libraries, Jane Nichols, Alison M. Bobal, Susan Mcevoy
E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)
Abstract
Usability, user studies, and evaluating user experiences have been a part of academic libraries for many years. In the last 20 years libraries have created ad hoc usability teams to do user studies. Oregon State University (OSU) Libraries started its ongoing team in 2006, resulting in an increased focus on user experience throughout the libraries. This article explores the team’s history from formation to work it took on. The merits and challenges usability teams bring to an organization are also discussed. To date the literature describes usability methods and shares findings from libraries’ usability studies but none discusses benefits …

Let's Have A Party: Information Literacy Instruction As An Empowerment Strategy, Shahla Bahavar, Angela Boyd, Valeria Molteni, Sophie Lesinska
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2007
Is it a crazy idea or an innovative pedagogical strategy to turn an information literacy instruction (ILI) session into a party? Joy Kim, Curator of the Korean Heritage Library at the University of Southern California, implements this approach every semester to welcome Korean students to USC campus. Considering the success of her program, perhaps more instruction librarians should take time to organize information literacy welcome parties.
International and minority students experience more alienation on campus than average students. Effective ILI often minimizes this sense of alienation felt by these two groups. International students find services available in American libraries are …

Setting Sail Without A Map: Creative Collaboration For A Multi-Disciplinary Conference, Kathryn L. Venditti, Judith P. Williams
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2007
The Art of the Picture Book Conference was launched in May 2006 in Ashland, Ohio. The two-day event drew a total of 158 attendees, featured award-winning authors/ illustrators as keynote speakers, and offered 35 sessions, selected from a total of 45 proposal submissions. By involving co-curricular programs and community partners, such as other departments on campus, the university bookstore, local public libraries and school districts, and regional museums, the conference offered a variety of techniques to develop and enhance literacy in children. Presentation opportunities allowed our university students a venue to showcase their comprehensive information abilities. Crossover into various disciplines …

Collection Assessment Of Monograph Purchases At The University Of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries, J. Cory Tucker
Library Faculty Research
The purpose of this article is to describe an assessment project of the monograph collection at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Lied Library. The circulation statistics and in-house use of all monographs for the nine colleges at UNLV were assessed analyzing the last five years of data. The analysis included an assessment of the circulation statistics and in-house use of books purchased on an approval plan compared with books purchased by individual liaison librarians. The findings illustrated the fact that overall use of the monograph collection has declined over the past five years. The findings also showed that …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Collection Development Policies
The Love Library print reference collection provides access to information essential to the instructional, research, and service programs of the University community. It integrates with the library electronic reference collection and operates according to principles stated in the University Libraries Reference Collection Development Policy. As a result it primarily contains items preferred in print because of cost, availability, use patterns, ease of use, archival needs, completeness, need for official text, need for cumulative data, delays in the publication of electronic versions, or instability of online sources. Anthropological Study Of Shain Library: Uses, Perceptions, And Recommendations, Ingrid Brudvig, Casey Corn, Reed Harris, Brendan Kempf, Sophie Marx, Nick Mercer, Lauren Moran, Erich Roberts
Anthropology Department Student Projects
In the spring of 2009 professor Benoit’s Applied Anthropology class conducted a comprehensive study on Connecticut College’s Shain Library. The class met with the library staff multiple times before deciding how to tackle the project. The research question posed was, how do students use and perceive the library? Does the library satisfy student’s needs, and if not what changes could be implemented to better the student body?
The class began by submitting a proposal of our project to the Institutional Review Board, and then proceeded with the investigation. Though the topic as a whole is an examination of Shain Library …
