Princess fairy tales have made the Disney Corporation so famous. At fi rst, Disney princesses were white skinned. As time goes by, Disney started fi lming animated movies with colored princesses. In 2009, Disney released a movie based on an African-American princess named Tiana in ‘The Princess and the Frog’ (2009). Ambiguities in terms of understanding black appear in the fi lm. To help analyzing this movie, Barthes’ semiotics theory will be used. By using that theory, the writer proposes that on one hand, Disney conveys that America has become “color blind,” but on the other, blacks are positioned as …

Inter-Organizational Social Network Information Systems: Diagnosing And Design, Matthew T. Mullarkey
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
While IS research into on-line Inter-Personal (IP) Social Networks (SN) is highly visible, there has been surprisingly little focus on the use of on-line social networks for Inter-Organizational (IO) communications, interactions, and goal achievement. We explore the issues and challenges facing organizations in their design and use of inter-organizational social network information systems (IO SNIS). Artifact design principles are drawn from a new and insightful model that contrasts the advantages of existing innovative inter-personal (IP) SNIS artifacts with Social Network Theory on differences between IP and IO Social Networks. This research extends the existing streams of IS social networking research …

Qualitative Engagement Of Nigerian Students And Librarians In The Analysis Of Deviance In Library Utilization, Adediran D. Ikuomola, Rashidi Akanji Okunola, Samuel Olabode Fabunmi
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Research on library deviance in Nigeria has largely relied on librarians’ accounts, which often portray students as ‘deviants’ and the libraries as ‘victims’, however we focus on a holistic account which incorporates both students’ and librarians’ narratives in the analysis of deviant behaviours in library utilization. Through observations and interviews the paper highlighted some common trends of deviance and the implication on library utility in selected universities. The study reveals a gap in the security of students’ personal effects, inadequate electricity supply and a wide range of deviant behaviours associated with the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in …

Publarians And Lubishers: Role Bending In The New Scholarly Communications Ecosystem, Nancy Maron, Sylvia Miller, Charles Watkinson, Anne Kenney
Charleston Library Conference
It has been said that the work of publishers and librarians will merge over time until we are all publarians and lublishers. Do we still envision a shared future? As new publishing programs within libraries and experimental publisher-library collaborations continue to challenge us to move outside of our comfort zones, are we learning from each other? What are some practical, down-to-earth ways that we can take advantage of each other’s expertise? How can we produce and market scholarly content in a more integrated way to meet the needs of scholars in a digital-information ecosystem, without duplicating effort on separate tracks? …

Modeling A Shared National Cross Digital Repository, Jean-Gabriel Bankier
Charleston Library Conference
The United States Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) delivered an open access directive in early 2013 mandating that federally funded research articles and associated data must be made accessible online to the public, free of charge. In response to this mandate, university and library organizations proposed the Shared Access Research Ecosystem (SHARE). With experience in the design and creation of large-scale federated repositories, bepress, best known for our hosted institutional repository platform Digital Commons, can offer unique insight into what makes a federated repository successful. This paper will outline the attributes of a successful shared national cross digital …

In November 2012, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced it would begin enforcing its April 2008 mandate of public access to NIH-funded research by delaying processing of investigators’ grants reporting noncompliant publications. In response, the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries offered to assist the University’s sponsored research administration in supporting NCSU researchers who had publications stemming from NIH funding and had not achieved compliance. Since the 2008 NIH mandate, over 1,000 articles based on NIH-funding have been published by NCSU across research areas including veterinary medicine, life sciences, physical sciences, social sciences, engineering, textiles, design, math, and statistics. …

Acquiring Unique Collections: Collaborative Approaches To Metadata, Kira Homo
Charleston Library Conference
Acquisition of unique digital material is an ongoing challenge for Special Collections units—often unique digital material comes with little or no metadata associated with the digital objects. Using two ongoing projects at the University of Oregon Libraries as case studies, this paper explores strategies archivists and librarians can use to increase descriptive metadata coming in with unique born-digital collections. Library staff involved with the Latino Roots and University of Oregon Veterans Oral History projects work with the content creators, in this case faculty and students, to build collections with rich descriptive information that is relevant both to librarians and to …

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are disrupting the traditional view of learning and the academy. Using technology, high-quality courses taught by some of the brightest minds are now available to unprecedented numbers of students. The university now has the potential to be in the computer. If the university is truly in the computer, what does that mean for the library?
In this plenary session, Meredith Schwartz from Library Journal shares highlights from her article “Massive Open Opportunity: Supporting MOOCs in Public and Academic Libraries,” with an emphasis on academic communities. Key topics include definitions, current and future trends, and the …

Scholarly Societies, Scholarly Publishing, And The New Information Ecology, Robert Kieft, Kathleen Fitzpatrick, Brandon Nordin, Steven C. Wheatley
Charleston Library Conference
Since the founding of the Royal Society in the 1660s and with the development of disciplinary fields in the later nineteenth century, scholarly societies have established themselves as mediators of the professional lives of faculty and as vital components of the ecology of scholarly communication. In their interactions with libraries, societies may appear primarily as publishers of newsletters, books, reports, journals, indexes, and databases, but they also promote the creation and diffusion of knowledge by serving as hubs for professional activity, contributors to the making of public policy and opinion, providers of education, representatives of the interests of their members, …
Sustainability Metrics In Library And Information Services: A Quality Management Framework, Paula Ochôa, Leonor Gaspar Pinto
Sustainability Metrics In Library And Information Services: A Quality Management Framework, Paula Ochôa, Leonor Gaspar Pinto
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
This paper discusses the role of sustainability metrics in quality management in Library and Information Services (LIS), contributing to the ongoing debate by developing an integrated framework that offers an opportunity to measure sustainability value, influence and meaning of information services, and providing an illustrative example of LIS professionals and students discussion in Portugal. LIS assessment experience can strongly contribute to the debate around culture and development and, therefore, global sustainability. But in order to have its expertise externally recognize, the library and information community needs to integrate the sustainability perspective into the LIS performance evaluation research and practice, using …
Students’ Digital Photography Behaviors During A Multiday Environmental Science Field Trip And Their Recollections Of Photographed Science Content, Victor R. Lee
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
Taking photographs to document the experiences of an educational field trip is becoming a common activity for teachers and students alike. Considering the regular creation of photographic artifacts, our goal in this paper is to explore students’ picture taking behavior and their recollections of science content associated with their photographs. In this study, we partnered with a class of fifth-grade students in the United States and provided each student with a digital camera to document their experiences during an environmental science field trip at a national park. We report the frequency of photography behaviors according to which activities were most …

Digital Baboon: Curating 30 Years Of Primatology Research Data, Cynthia Hudson-Vitale, Jennifer Moore
WashU Libraries Presentations
Many digital data curators will agree that making digital storage, online platform, digitization best practices, and metadata schema choices is a complicated process, even for a simple database. Curating a project that encompasses tooth casts, palm prints, field sheets, videos, images, and a database assembled over a thirty-year period extends those challenges, but also creates an opportunity to preserve and share an irreplaceable contribution to research. Librarians at Washington University in St. Louis are currently working with Dr. Jane Phillips-Conroy, Professor of Physical Anthropology; Anatomy and Neurobiology, to digitally curate this heterogeneous mix of physical and digital data. Dr. Phillips-Conroy’s …

The purpose of this study is to compare the religious non-fiction collection of a public library (Natchitoches Parish Library) with the religious non-fiction collection of a Christian church library (First Baptist Church, Natchitoches) focusing on those books classified in the 200s of the Dewey Decimal Classification system. The two libraries that are the focus of this study are located directly across the street from each other. By uncovering strengths and weaknesses of each collection and pinpointing areas of overlap, the staff of the two libraries may be able to use the findings to identify ways in which they may be …
