New Directions In Faculty Work And The Key Role Of The Library, Promita Chatterji Jan 2016

New Directions In Faculty Work And The Key Role Of The Library, Promita Chatterji

Promita Chatterji

Digital scholarship is changing dramatically for faculty, and libraries are under pressure to understand and support their needs as they evolve. In addition to their formal publications, faculty are interested in sharing and managing a wide variety of materials, from datasets to images, audio, technical reports, course materials, syllabi, and more. By understanding the changing nature of faculty needs, libraries can play a key role in supporting this scholarship. In this presentation, Promita Chatterji of the bepress Outreach team discusses major trends in digital scholarship and present a variety of ways to support these new directions.

Comparing Apples To (Apples) Oranges: An Exploration Of The Use Of Libguides In Arl Libraries, Rosalinda H. Linares, Anna Marie Johnson

Anna Marie Johnson

LibGuides, a Springshare software platform used across ARL institutions, is a technology tool librarians use to create online research guides. As LibGuides implementation becomes increasingly ubiquitous, best practices for evaluating and improving LibGuides benefit from a review of the literature and interlibrary usage examination. This case study reviews the literature on LibGuides, explores usage statistics of LibGuides at 27 ARL institutions with particular attention paid to the University of Louisville Libraries, and provides recommendations for increasing LibGuides usage and opportunities for further research.

Exploring Reading Habits And Academic Success In Rural Kenya, Florence Mugambi

Florence N. Mugambi

This study explores the relationship between reading habits and reading materials, and academic success of primary school students in the Ontulili community of Kenya. The study revealed high levels of satisfaction and contentment among the participants with respect to the availability of resources, reading abilities, educational performance, and overall preparedness for further education; yet, the data pointed to severe scarcity of learning materials, low reading skills, poor infrastructure, below average educational performance, and low preparedness for further education. It was concluded that lack of exposure to relevant reading materials, educational resources, and opportunities leads to subtle contentment alongside individual inability …

Rda: Loss Of Gmd And Changes Regarding Type And Format, Robert Bothmann Nov 2015

Rda: Loss Of Gmd And Changes Regarding Type And Format, Robert Bothmann

Bobby Bothmann

The pending decision to move to RDA is still a few months away, but some libraries have already begun following RDA guidelines. AACR2’s general material designation (GMD) is not perpetuated in RDA guidelines. Instead, RDA records define the content of the expression, the medium of the manifestation, and the carrier of the manifestation. This session will discuss the changes that will occur with RDA vocabulary, the issues related to display of the vocabulary particularly as it relates to special formats, and the effect this change may have on the display in the Aleph OPAC and in MnPALS Plus.

Have you heard of MARC Edit and wondered what all the fuss is about? Do you have some bibliographic record changes in your catalog you want to fix, but you don’t have global change privileges? Do you have some bibliographic records in Aleph you want to bring up to current standards? Are you getting collection set or vendor MARC files you wish you could massage or modify before you import them into Aleph? This session will provide some case studies with walk through demonstrations addressing some of the questions posed in this description.

Success! Assessment In Action And Its Impact On Four Academic Libraries, Lisa Massengale, Heather Jagman, Amy Glass, Stephanie Bluemle

Heather Jagman

This panel will provide an overview of Assessment in Action learning projects, which assessed library impact on student learning. Augustana College studied the effect of using original primary materials on first-year students’ information literacy and critical thinking skills. DePaul University investigated how independent learning activities allowed first year students to articulate how the library contributed to their success. Illinois Central College looked at library instruction’s impact on student success within sections of Composition ENG 111 (Composition II) courses. Illinois Institute of Technology examined whether intensity of library usage affected undergraduate student success.

Climbing The Mountain On The Quest For Success: Adventures In First-Year Librarianship, Laurie Aycock, Christina Holm, Amanda Albert Oct 2015

Climbing The Mountain On The Quest For Success: Adventures In First-Year Librarianship, Laurie Aycock, Christina Holm, Amanda Albert

Laurie Aycock

It is easy to view the transition from student or paraprofessional to librarian as the end of a journey. While in reality, this transition is more analogous to a hiker reaching the summit of a mountain. At first the hiker is filled with a sense of relief and victory - which quickly fades as the hiker realizes that the trail continues. This panel will discuss three differing perspectives on the first-year librarian experience. Discussion topics include the ambiguity of job requirements, uncertainties regarding personal abilities, shifting administrator expectations, and coping with feeling both under- and overwhelmed. This discussion will demystify …

Cats As Detectives In Library Mysteries, Mary Freier Jul 2015

Cats As Detectives In Library Mysteries, Mary Freier

Mollie Freier

Cats have become ubiquitous as detectives or detective assistants in twenty-first century mysteries, although the trend began with the “The Cat Who” books, the first of which was published in the nineteen-sixties. Cats have a fine history in the detective genre, but current depictions of cats as detectives include the cats conversing with other animals and even the human detective in the novel. Some of these cats possess supernatural abilities, and even those who don't possess impressive intelligence. Cats are notorious, of course, for being curious, and the librarians who function as amateur sleuths are similar in this regard. Some …

Rare Books In Detective Fiction: Information As Object, Mary Freier Jul 2015

Rare Books In Detective Fiction: Information As Object, Mary Freier

Mollie Freier

Library mysteries written since 1970 often depict intrigue surrounding the theft or threatened theft of rare books. Charles Goodrum, a director of the Library of Congress, once wrote that when he decided to write a mystery novel set in a library, he spent an evening coming up with ideas for such a novel. He said that he came up with dozens, but settled on a plot about rare book theft because he thought it would be more accessible to general readers. Many other mystery writers have made the same decision. Although these mysteries are often considered library mysteries and frequently …

Developing Collecting Areas Through Digital Surrogate Donations: Are The Benefits Worth The Risks?, Kevin C. Miller Jun 2015

Developing Collecting Areas Through Digital Surrogate Donations: Are The Benefits Worth The Risks?, Kevin C. Miller

Kevin C. Miller

Special collections librarians at small or medium sized institutions may lack the resources required to build new collecting areas or further enrich the collecting areas mandated by their mission. As one measure to overcome this challenge at Pepperdine University, we are experimenting with an approach that we call “digital surrogate” donations. In these cases, we work with donors to create digital surrogates—typically scans of images or texts—of select physical materials with which donors are not quite ready to part. Per a modified donor agreement, the digital surrogate collections are then made available to researchers through our digital archive and open …

More Than Just Where To Click, Heather Jagman, Troy Swanson

Heather Jagman

How do we move students beyond mechanical searching skills toward more sophisticated ways of understanding information? How can we encourage students reflect on their own beliefs and worldviews as they interact with sources? ACRL’s new title, Not Just Where to Click: Teaching Students How to Think about Information seeks to answer these questions. In addition to providing background on the editorial process, Swanson and Jagman will highlight the connections made by contributors and explore how authors provide a balance of theoretical and applied approaches to information literacy, supplying readers with accessible and innovative ideas ready to be put into practice.

Data In The Sciences At Colby College, A Case Study, Susan Westerberg Cole

Susan Westerberg Cole

A sabbatical project looked at the research data needs of science faculty at a small liberal arts college in order to determine potential library support services. I concluded that support needs to come from multiple campus units. This study highlighted the value of personal interviews to discover actual needs that had been unanticipated.
