Many methods of legal education have been used over the years. Each has its strengths and its weaknesses. The study of the past is instructive and useful in showing both the good and bad goals and methods. We must cultivate the good and uproot the bad. This study suggests that there has always been progress, slow but constant improvement. The teaching of law is vital to the administration of justice, a noble cause. The continuing challenge is ever to strive for the improvement thereof.

The English Inns of Court in London had ceased to perform their educational functions in the middle of the seventeenth century. For the next hundred years or so, there was no formal or organized instruction of the English common law. Lawyers, both barristers and solicitors in England and in America, learned their profession as best they could in unstructured situations. They learned by serving as apprentices or clerks to practicing lawyers, by the independent reading of law books, and by observation in the courtroom itself.
Advocacy As Moral Discourse, Thomas L. Shaffer
Advocacy As Moral Discourse, Thomas L. Shaffer
Journal Articles
Advocacy at its best is a form of reconciliation. It reconciles the advocate with those whose champion he proposes to be. It reconciles the advocate with his hearers. It reconciles the person whose cause is advocated with the persons who hear advocacy. It brings to community life a new sense of the interests of those the community neglects. It seeks to make things better. It is moral discourse.
This article will examine advocacy in two contexts. The first is advocacy to an institution, conducted in the name of justice or the welfare of the community; one might call this first …

Clinical Education-A Golden Dancer?, W. Wade Berryhill
Clinical Education-A Golden Dancer?, W. Wade Berryhill
Law Faculty Publications
Clinical education is acclaimed by its advocates to be the salvation of the wayward and sick soul of the legal profession. Others, the staunch defenders of the more traditional academic methods, believing it to be nothing more than spit and sealing wax, shake their heads and murmur "is nothing sacred?" The purpose of this paper is to take a good "look behind the paint" of clinical education.

The Boston Legal Aid Society was founded in 1900. In the years after 1910, led by General Counsel Reginald Heber Smith, the Society assumed leadership of the fledgling movement to offer legal services to the urban poor. Under its influence the first organized attack on the legal problems of the impoverished was launched. The effort had its origins in the social and professional crises that beset turn of the century American cities and lawyers. As described in the first installment of this article, the major difficulty facing the movement during this generative era was how to balance the conflicting demands …

A Review: Unequal Justice: Lawyers And Social Change In Modern America, Lawrence Mayberry
A Review: Unequal Justice: Lawyers And Social Change In Modern America, Lawrence Mayberry
IUSTITIA
Unequal Justice is a social history of the legal profession from the emergence of The American Bar Association in the 1870's until the 1970's. Auerbach is a professional historian and not a member of the legal profession who writes history, nor is he a sociologist. But before his graduate work in history, the author entered and quickly left law school.
