Creating A Classroom Component For Field Placement Programs: Enhancing Clinical Goals With Feminish Pedagogy, Linda H. Morton
Faculty Scholarship
This article supports the use of feminist pedagogy to provide the ideal environment for engaging clinic students in self-learning. The author describes the complementary relationship between clinic goals and feminist pedagogy, illustrated through her use of a student-facilitated and non-hierarchical teaching model in her externship classes. The model used provides a unique and valuable educational environment for the training of prospective professionals.
Words, Deeds And The Work We Still Know So Little About, Mark Andrew Sherman
Words, Deeds And The Work We Still Know So Little About, Mark Andrew Sherman
St. Thomas Law Review
Part II of this Article provides the reader with background on the current state of federal affordable housing and community development law. It describes what President Clinton is inheriting from prior administrations as well as the new administration's affordable housing and community development agenda. In short, Part II describes the enormity of the challenge facing the legal community. In Part III, I describe a personal experience from my own background as a lawyer serving a group of low-income tenants struggling to preserve their housing. The purpose of the story is to provide some indication of the types of non-traditional skills …
Teach Your Students Well: Valuing Clients In The Law School Clinic., Ann Juergens
Teach Your Students Well: Valuing Clients In The Law School Clinic., Ann Juergens
Faculty Scholarship
Law schools, teaching primarily by the casebook method, generally avoid the thorny issues that real clients pose.' Recently, however, law review articles and the ""regular classroom"" have referred more frequently to real client stories. Law school clinics are a primary source of client stories. Despite increased attention to clinical programs, client interests are frequently subordinated to the goals of students, clinical law teachers and law schools. This article urges clinicians to constantly evaluate whether and how well they and their students take their clients' interests and perspectives on clinical education into account. It argues that clinic teachers must learn to …

Directiveness In Clinical Supervision, Jon Bauer
Directiveness In Clinical Supervision, Jon Bauer
Faculty Articles and Papers
This article, first published in 1993 but not previously available on SSRN, explores the attitudes and practices of clinical law teachers relating to issues of “directiveness” in their clinical supervision. The inquiry focuses on the tension between the educational value of student autonomy and clinicians’ professional interest in ensuring high quality client representation. The authors conducted a survey of clinicians teaching at law schools throughout the United States.

Deconstructing Los Angeles Or A Secret Fax From Magritte Regarding Postliterate Legal Reasoning: A Critique Of Legal Education, C. Garrison Lepow
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
This Article asks readers to imagine the shapes and colors of legal issues; it examines how people communicate and develop ideas through moving, metamorphosing images, especially computer graphics, and why methodology affects the eventual product of thought. Like dance, legal issues are described better through action than through words. Therefore, this Article challenges the principles of verbal reasoning upon which our legal system is based.

Mandatory Prelicensure Legal Internship: An Idea Whose Time Has Come Again, Stephen R. Alton
Mandatory Prelicensure Legal Internship: An Idea Whose Time Has Come Again, Stephen R. Alton
Faculty Scholarship
This Article explores the wisdom of imposing an internship requirement on aspiring lawyers as a prerequisite for licensure. It is my position that such a requirement can be beneficial to the new attorney, to the profession, and to the public and should thus be mandated for all those who seek admission to the practice of law. This Article begins by briefly examining the history in the United States of law-office, apprenticeship as a means of legal education. I then proceed to an examination of modern internship requirements in England and Canada. There follows a discussion of some of the more …
