Child adoption involves the permanent transfer of parental rights from a child’s biological or legal parents to another party. Parties in the Unites States (US) have engaged in this process in various forms for centuries. Today, over one hundred thousand children are adopted by American families each year. Many of these adoptions take place privately through agencies. An agency assists in the process of matching prospective adoptive parents with birth parents from whom they will adopt a child. Prohibiting the use of race-based data in damage award calculations will not eradicate other forms of systemic racism in tort law, as manifested in generational disparities in healthcare, education, or wealth. But it will be a step forward in valuing the lives of plaintiffs of color. To make this change, economists, the legal community, and legislators must reject what has become a widespread practice of relying on race-based data to calculate damage awards. Decades of social science research has shown that the identity of the parties in a legal action can affect case outcomes. Parties’ race, gender, class, and age all affect decisions of prosecutors, judges, juries, and other actors in a criminal prosecution or civil litigation. Less studied has been how identity might affect other forms of legal regulation. This Essay begins to explore perceptions of deceptive behavior—i.e., how wrongful it is, and the extent to which it should be regulated or punished—and the relationship of those perceptions to the gender of the actors. Fraud has been ubiquitous throughout history, and so have the methods of fraud prevention. History demonstrates that no anti-fraud measures have fully succeeded in eliminating deceptive market behavior. Instead, this Essay uses evidence from premodern England to argue that societies and individual contracting parties balance tolerating a certain amount of fraud against the costs of fraud prevention.

This article analyzes Russia’s geography and historical impact on Russian foreign policy, outlines Moscow’s current foreign policy goals, and highlights underlying concerns for US policymakers and military practitioners. By pursuing policies that support Russian goals of economic integration, mitigation of demographic concerns, and security of national borders, the United States can set the foundation for productive engagement on critical issues.

Data management plans (DMPs) are essential to a research data life cycle. The DMPs should be developed as part of the research programs to be effective. For disease area research, integrating research community-recommended data standards during collection can enhance the likelihood of data reuse. Informatics tools are required as part of DMPs with the aim of data being findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable.

Tennessee has long been considered the harshest in the nation regarding its treatment of minors convicted of first-degree murder. After the United States Supreme Court determined that automatic life sentences for juveniles violated the Eighth Amendment in Miller v. Alabama, many states began the process of reforming their sentencing statutes. Tennessee did not follow this trend, as the law on the books did not prescribe a “life sentence” to youthful homicide offenders. Rather, Tennessee’s sentencing statute automatically sentenced juveniles convicted of first-degree murder to a lengthy “term of years,” and as a result, did not fall within the reach …

The socio-historical concept of criminal responsibility links the action (actus reus) and mental state (mens rea), or intention, of the actor (i.e., the defendant) to determine legal and moral liability for his or her behavior and to apportion punishment. When the actor responsible for immoral conduct is the prosecutor in pursuit of a conviction, the courts respond very differently. More specifically, because prosecutors are presumed to be moral and ethical system actors, assumptions about their good character likely influence the ways in which they are held to account. This Article posits the history of forensic-science evidence plays a significant role in the unquestioning manner of its modern acceptance. It traces early high-profile forensic science “successes” and the public reactions to them. It argues the public perception of the “advances” of forensic science continues to play a role in the lack of scrutiny given to these disciplines in admissibility decisions today. It concludes, when it comes to forensic science, history should play a different role by serving as a critical warning rather than a congratulatory buttress.

Plastic is a significant portion of marine debris, ranging from 60% to 80%. Historically, ships have been a major contributor to plastic pollution in the ocean, followed by Indonesia, which is acknowledged as the second-largest originator. Global efforts to combat marine pollution, including plastic waste, have been undertaken through international agreements like MARPOL Annex V. This agreement has mandated countries to establish suitable port facilities for ship-generated wastes. However, an assessment of Indonesian ports indicated insufficient compliance with environmental management standards, particularly in waste handling. The purpose of the current study is to explore the factors that influence sexual health decisions of female Latina immigrants with low socioeconomic status in an urban area. We aimed to evaluate the possible preventive steps to lower their risk of contracting STDs.
