Contested Borders And National Identity In Southeast Asia: An Analysis Of Thailand– Cambodia Dispute Through Nontawat Numbenchapol’S Documentary Film, Boundary, Mirwan Andan

International Review of Humanities Studies

Southeast Asia remains a region marked by numerous interstate border disputes. Among these, the Thailand–Cambodia border dispute surrounding the Preah Vihear Temple, located between Sisaket Province in Thailand and Preah Vihear Province in Cambodia, represents one of the conflicts with the greatest potential to affect regional stability and harmony in the region. This dispute extends beyond questions of territorial sovereignty, encompassing the construction of national identity, historical memory, and the domestic political dynamics of both countries. This article examines the representation of nationalism in Boundary (2013), a documentary film directed by Thai independent filmmaker Nontawat Numbenchapol. Drawing on perspectives interdisciplinary …

Bridging The Justice Gap: A Comparative Study Of Legal Aid Marketing In Canada, Australia, And The United States, Farah O. Haq May 2026

Bridging The Justice Gap: A Comparative Study Of Legal Aid Marketing In Canada, Australia, And The United States, Farah O. Haq

Student Theses and Dissertations

Access to justice remains a central challenge across legal systems, particularly for immigrants and refugees, Indigenous communities, and survivors of domestic violence. While legal aid organizations play a critical role in bridging this gap, their effectiveness increasingly depends on how clearly and compassionately they communicate legal information online to their target audience. This thesis conducts a comparative content analysis of nine nonprofit legal aid organizations in the United States, Canada, and Australia, three countries united by a common law tradition but divided by the communication barriers their communities face, examining 180 social media posts and nine websites through the lens …

Leveraging Citizen Science To Advance Environmental Justice In Climate-Vulnerable Communities Post-Loper Bright, Lauren Valli May 2026

Leveraging Citizen Science To Advance Environmental Justice In Climate-Vulnerable Communities Post-Loper Bright, Lauren Valli

Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law

The Supreme Court’s 2024 decision in Loper Bright Enterprises v.

Raimondo removed the judicial obligation to defer to the Environmental

Protection Agency’s statutory interpretations, overturning forty years of

Chevron v. NRDC jurisprudence. Now, generalist judges must

independently evaluate complex scientific data when determining

statutory meaning, creating the risk that well-resourced industry parties

will use their litigation advantages to secure pollution-permissive statutory

interpretations. Without deference to EPA’s technical understanding and

public welfare considerations, environmental litigation outcomes

increasingly depend on which party can most persuasively present

environmental data in court. This interpretation shift widens the

environmental enforcement gap and disproportionately harms historically …

What The Court Tells Reporters: A Discourse Analysis Of Press Interviews With The Justices Since 2000, Brown James May 2026

What The Court Tells Reporters: A Discourse Analysis Of Press Interviews With The Justices Since 2000, Brown James

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

The Supreme Court of the United States is among the most influential institutions in American life, yet it is also well known to be one of the most secluded and inaccessible. By and large, the justices only pass their thoughts and decision-making processes to the public via their official written opinions, and seldom grant interviews to reporters. General press coverage of the Court has been given considerable scholarly attention, but the limited interviews the justices grant to the press receive comparatively little attention. This article examines those interviews by analyzing 82 press interviews with active and retired justices from 2000 …

Du Essentia Hominum: Regulating The Artificial Intelligence Crisis, Natalie K. Snodgrass

Helms School of Government Undergraduate Law Review

In May 2023, the Center for AI Safety, a nonprofit dedicated to reducing the risks of artificial intelligence misuse, held a conference to discuss a single sentence statement. This statement was signed by an international group of experts, including chief AI executives, nuclear physicists, politicians, and more. Artificial Intelligence serves as one of the modern world's greatest achievements and potentially greatest problems. Generative AI is not human, yet its creations pose problems in human copyright law and the First Amendment. This Note will address the development of AI, along with the reason why there is a need to regulate this …

Seeing Beyond The Words: What Interdisciplinary Methodologies Reveal About International Law, Matthew S. Erie, Mark Pollack, Wolfgang Alschner, Beth Simmons, Katerina Linos

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

INTRODUCTION: On April 24, 2025, the International Law and Social Science Interest Group debuted at the ASIL Annual Meeting with a panel that posed a deceptively simple question: how can social science tools advance the work of international lawyers? Chaired by Chantal Thomas, the session brought together Matthew Erie, Wolfgang Alschner, Beth Simmons, and Katerina Linos— scholars who bridge doctrinal and empirical inquiry—to show how ethnography, computational text analysis, counterfactual inference, and mixed-method design can illuminate legal puzzles that doctrine alone cannot solve. The four short essays in this symposium provide parallel illustrations of this core theme: Erie’s ethnographic approach …

Diverse Legalities: Towards A Legal Theory For A Postcapitalist Political Economy, Amy J. Cohen, Stephen Healy Oct 2025

Diverse Legalities: Towards A Legal Theory For A Postcapitalist Political Economy, Amy J. Cohen, Stephen Healy

Law and Contemporary Problems

Law and political economy (LPE) scholars have revived a longstanding debate over the relationship among law, capitalism, and postcapitalist possibility. Is law a creature of capitalism, destined to reproduce its dynamics of exploitation and dominance? Or are there moments of indeterminacy in law that function specifically as openings to a postcapitalist elsewhere?

We enter this debate by posing a different question. Following feminist Marxist economic geographers J.K. Gibson-Graham, we ask what questions arise for LPE scholars if we begin instead with the presumption "that postcapitalist worlds are already here but have been cast into shadow by a singular economic framing …

Precipitated By The Pandemic: From Remote Witnessing To Electronic Wills, Edward Ti, Hang Wu Tang Oct 2025

Precipitated By The Pandemic: From Remote Witnessing To Electronic Wills, Edward Ti, Hang Wu Tang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the rigidity of will-making laws requiring in-person witnessing. Jurisdictions responded differently: some introduced temporary measures, others implemented permanent reforms allowing remote witnessing. This article compares responses in England and Wales, selected Australian states, Singapore, and Hong Kong SAR, tracing developments toward potential recognition of electronic wills. The central argument is that law reform should balance accessibility with safeguards against fraud and undue influence, avoiding overly burdensome formalities that deter compliance. The article concludes by examining how national digital identity systems could be used for the execution of electronic wills.

Bridging The Rural Telehealth Divide, Deborah Farringer Oct 2025

Bridging The Rural Telehealth Divide, Deborah Farringer

Law Faculty Scholarship

This article examines the historical development, regulatory landscape, and post-pandemic future of telehealth in the United States, with a particular focus on its original purpose: improving access to care for rural populations. Although Congress first authorized Medicare reimbursement for telehealth in 1997 to alleviate rural health disparities, federal and state regulatory frameworks—especially restrictions on originating sites, licensure rules, and HIPAA-driven technology requirements—significantly limited adoption for more than two decades. The COVID-19 public health emergency triggered sweeping temporary waivers that removed geographic limitations, permitted the use of common communication technologies, liberalized supervision and prescribing rules, and allowed audio-only encounters. These changes …

Social Media Optimization Of Ramampa Resto & Bar As A Visual Strategy, Monique Pricilya Oei, Aniendya Christianna

International Review of Humanities Studies

In the digital era, social media has become an important marketing tool for businesses, including the culinary industry. This study examines the use of motion graphics to develop the social media presence of Rarampa Resto and Bar, a restaurant serving Manado cuisine and healthy MSG-free food, located in South Jakarta. Although the restaurant has a loyal customer base, particularly from the 40-60 age group, its social media content fails to attract younger audiences, especially millennials, who seek unique and authentic culinary experiences. This study suggests that Rarampa's social media content, which mainly focuses on event photography and the restaurant's ambiance, …

Visual Legal Rhetoric In The Age Of Generative Ai And Deepfakes: Renaissance Or Dark Ages?, Michael D. Murray Jan 2025

Visual Legal Rhetoric In The Age Of Generative Ai And Deepfakes: Renaissance Or Dark Ages?, Michael D. Murray

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

The paradoxical development of visual generative AI tools, such as OpenAI’s DALL-E 3, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion, simultaneously signals a renaissance and a potential dark age in visual rhetoric and communication. On the one hand, these tools democratize the creation of visual content, empowering attorneys and others to become artists and illustrators of their legal communications without needing to learn how to draw. These AI systems can simplify complex legal concepts, bridge language barriers, and enhance advocacy. But on the other hand, the proliferation of deepfakes presents significant challenges for visual rhetoric. Deepfakes can quickly and easily create realistic but …

How Theories Of Art Can Inform Debates About Ai, Jessica Silbey Jan 2025

How Theories Of Art Can Inform Debates About Ai, Jessica Silbey

Emory Law Journal

Debates about artificial intelligence (AI) tend to swing between the optimistic and the apocalyptic. I propose a less binary approach that frames conversations about AI from the perspectives of theories of art and creativity. Whether we agree that AI is artificial or intelligent, whether it should be constrained or liberated, we cannot deny its influence on literary, artistic, and innovative production. AI may be described as simply a new tool to produce art and science, like the camera or the microscope, or it may transform and reshape art and science, the way the internet transformed global communication. Either way, these …

Drafting In The Digital Age: Contract-Design And Web-Based Consumer Contracts, Ben Fernandez Jan 2025

Drafting In The Digital Age: Contract-Design And Web-Based Consumer Contracts, Ben Fernandez

UF Law Faculty Publications

Consumers often do not read the contracts they sign. They know the basic terms of the deal and take the risk that it is enough to avoid being sued for breach. Even sophisticated businesspeople often do not read the documents they sign; they rely on their attorneys to tell them what they need to know. If the sole purpose of documenting a contract is to protect the party that has the financial resources and the leverage to hire an attorney to draft it, then the attorney doesn’t do their client a disservice by focusing solely on the contract’s enforceability. A …

The Urgency Of Official Non-Halal Labels In Restaurants As A Consumer Protection In Indonesia, Yudha Pratama Putra, Nurwahidin Nurwahidin, Nur Fatwa

Journal Of Middle East and Islamic Studies

Information about non-halal labels is regulated by Law No. 33 of 2014 concerning Halal Product Guarantees. Article 93 states that products originating from prohibited materials must include non-halal details in the form of images, writing, or the name of the material with a different color in the composition of the material, for example red. In 2014, the Head of the Halal Registration and Certification Center at the BPJPH Ministry of Religion explained that his party would regulate the use of non-halal labels for non-halal products in the Minister of Religion regulations. However, until now, this plan has not been realized. …

Ai-Based Assistive Technologies & People With Disabilities: Privacy At Risk, Jasmine Madaan Sep 2024

Ai-Based Assistive Technologies & People With Disabilities: Privacy At Risk, Jasmine Madaan

LLM Theses

This thesis follows three research questions. First, it explores the potential privacy risks that people with disabilities (PWDs) face in the face of incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) in assistive technologies (ATs). It then investigates reasons that exacerbate PWDs’ vulnerability to such potential privacy risks. Since legal literature in the context of AI-based ATs is limited, this thesis adopts a combination of multidisciplinary and traditional legal doctrinal research by studying legal literature and empirical research in other disciplines. Lastly, the thesis reviews the current Canadian data protection legal framework to examine if there is any provision specifically addressing PWDs or …

Animal Liberation Front: Threat To Kentucky, Zoe E. Hunt

Posters-at-the-Capitol

The Animal Liberation Front (ALF) is a global terrorist organization that was founded in 1976. Since the creation of ALF, the group has spread rapidly as well as turned into a domestic terrorist organization in the United States. With this project, the group's potential threat to Kentucky was evaluated. ALF was evaluated using four structured analytic techniques and an intelligence collection plan. A better understanding of what ALF is was formed by the discussion of the group’s origins, ideology, and organization. In addition, the group's goals, objectives, and capabilities were discussed. Using the information gathered during the threat profile, the …
